The Neighborhood

I live within a 1/2 mile from two (2) police is a police training station.

At ANY given time, you will see several police patrols going up and down the street, to and from the station. There is only so much precaution a traveller can take, but its always nice to know that protection is just AT the corner. So be safe! For those who need additional security, feel free to take advantage of my night time free shuttle from the nearest train stop!

I will admit, there are better areas in Chicago but none will be as memorable as your stay here! If you are looking for a posh, well-to-do area, DO NOT BOOK HERE! hehehe This is an urban inner city community that has undergone nice redevelopment due to the brand new college recently built (but has some work to be done). I live near a beautiful massive park with a full running track, community center /swimming and children's playground.

  • Two 50 something Ladies from Michigan really felt like young people again staying with so many youngsters from around the world. As a former teacher, I guess I did enjoy giving sound advice. What can I say about the place? Well I have traveled since my 20's all over the world. I stayed in many youth hostels. This was a step up because I loved the use of the kitchen and talking with young people. I just needed a place for 7 to 8 hours to sleep and go for 3 nights. This saved me money and I really did enjoy talking with my new fabulous friend Annie.

  • My decision to go to Chicago was at the last minute, and late at night. Annie replied right away, and gave all the info plus more that I needed to get there. She directs you to read her website about her place and neighborhood, and she gives it to you straight. After reading it, I was hooked. I appreciate a genuine straight forward person and Annie sounded like that kind of person. Annie proved to be a wonderful caring host. She provided info on what fun things going on in Chicago, and she also insisted on picking anyone once it got dark. On her site she said her place was where you would meet interesting people and make life long friends. And I did! One day, Annie arranged an outing and about 10 of us went. If I had gone to a hotel I know I would not have had this much fun. Visiting a city for the first time is done best with friends, and that's exactly what I found with Annie and her guest. When I go back to Chicago, I will definitely stay at Annie's place!

  • the sofaSleeper has seen better days and 24 people on the same night was a bit to much "shared room/house" for me.

  • Annie's house is a great experience, you can know a lot of people and she s really a nice person.
The best thing is that she really take care about you. This has no value. Thank you!!!

    Gracias Nonya

  • Host: Annie is a great host and person to talk to. She is very knowledgeable about the city and is always ready to make your trip better. I only brought a credit card to purchase my bus card and of course they didn't accept credit cards. Without hesitation, Annie loaned me the funds. Also... if it weren't for her, I would have missed my early morning flight out of Chicago!!

Home: Her place is extremely clean (including the bathroom!). I didn't know what to expect with so many people being there, but everyone cleans up after themselves. It puts you in mind of a co-op meets a hostel. She is making efforts to renovate and is open to suggestions. I stayed on the pull out sofa. The box springs aggravated my old cheer injuries, but that certainly didn't stop me from passing out and oversleeping several times :)

Location: Annie is very honest in her post. If you mind your Ps & Qs you will be fine. The only difficulty I had with the location is that cab drivers are hesitant to drop you off or pick you up... BUT Annie has a shuttle service. Just make sure to give her a heads up if possible. The bus runs frequently and is less than a 5 min walk away. I was visiting U Chicago and Northwestern law. I had no problem getting to either location.

Overall: This is a great place if you are on a budget and open to new experiences. You will meet people you might not have otherwise crossed paths with. Get ready!

  • At Annies place we had a great time and met a lot of people from all over the world. Her house is a not very near to the downtown city but easy reachable with the subway.
Annie is a lovely lady, who can tell a lot of stories and gives you a private city.

  • The stay at Annie's place was great! She is a great host and you get to meet so many different people. Full cooking facilities and the place is kept clean. Only precaution I would take is that it is in a rough neighborhood where you will stand out, so you need to take a few precautions. In saying that there are 2 police stations located near her house so you do feel relatively safe. Having a car feels like the safest option of getting around, but even if you don't Annie is still nice enough to pick you up from the subway station, especially at night. All in all, was a good stay!

I Love Travelers, traveling and everything in between. Born and raised in Chicago, I became an avid traveller and barter enthusiast. I've been travelling for 20 years and could easily write my own book on travelling on a budget. I PRIDE myself on the deals I would obtain. A week in Ireland, rental of two 3 bedroom entire homes for $45! FOUR Chicago Bull playoff games during the Michael Jordan Era included 4th row floor seats, box seats...$100 total! Travelled europe thru 15 countries for $500 including accommodations and food...for a 3 month period! And this was BEFORE Airbnb. I can go on. I'm geeked when I find a deal and become just plain silly with happiness at an unbelievable deal. Even upon confirmation, my website for my guests are filled with free and things to do for CRAZY CHEAP. 'Spend like a spencer, but live like a king!' Aside from that, my mother was a big enthusiast in education. As the oldest of nine (9), I can tell you that we were not short on activities. Piano lessons on Saturday AND an hour a day, per child of piano practice since 4!; tennis on Sunday, knitting lessons on Tuesday and Thursday, sewing lessons on Wednesday and swim classes on Friday. And tha'ts not including the architectural/drafting studies and woodshop classes that consumed my teenage years in addition. If you are good, I can definately knit you a sweater with a nice cable stitch! My piano teacher was Professor Zilner Randolph for over 15 years. If you don't know who he is, perhaps you heard of a musician called Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington? He was Louis Armstrong's musical director, played trumpet on a number of Armstrong's recordings and composed the tune "Old Man Moses'. He also played with Carroll Dickerson and Dave Peyton in the middle of the decade, and led his own Chicago band later in the 1930s. He was an arranger for Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, and others. Six of my siblings and I were his students for over 15 years.. In fact, one of my brothers, if you wish to look him up for a concert near you, is a worldwide professional jazz pianist and a graduate of Berkley College, with several releases. As for me, I became sidetracked with travel. If you are ever in South Korea, Ecuador, or Florida, you will probably run into five of my sisters/brothers and their familiies. Say hello for me! My home was built in 1875. So you will find some old and new features within. I'm always in construction to some degree within. Thanks to airbnb, I have been able to complete at least 75% of the renovations. Still have much to do. I feel everyone should open their minds to new things, cultural experiences and diversity. Only then can you understand people thru their eyes and not some narrow minded media coverage. By letting their experience be your experience will help you better understand people in a true and raw sense. That's why I simply love Airbnb. It places you in parts of the world where you probably wouldn't have gone but always wanted to go to get that 'local' feel with a local and trusted host. Since I don't travel as much as I used to....Let your experience be my experience! I look forward to meeting you.
