The Yurt was very clean and cool. Its a great way to get back to the basics of true vacationing. We also stayed at the Hilton and won't go back. We are now "Yurters" The town of Ocean View has great pizza and awesome breakfast burritos. Gail was very sweet. Mahalo Zach and Nina
What an experience! The Yurt is awesome. We stated in the smaller one, and it was huge. The yurt and the bathroom / shower were very clean. There is beautiful volcanic rock all around, its really cool.
Gail and Greg were very nice and easy to communicate with. We did not get to meet them in person or see the farm. During the 2 nights we stayed with them, we had a great time and no issues at all.
The rooster sound they mention is real and starts early. We wore earplugs (kindly provided by our hosts) and it wasn't an issue.
There is a coffee shop down the street where some locals gather in the mornings, we hung out there both mornings and got to know Kenny and his wife (who run it together) along with some other locals. This part of the Big Island is definitely different from other parts, its even more laid back.
The Yurt is also close to the South Point and the Green Sand Beach, both worth the drive / hike.
Loved the yurt! So much more space than the two of us needed, but we enjoyed being able to spread out a bit. Everything was just as described and the hosts were awesome with communication and quite friendly!
Gail & Greg are amazing hosts, they are very warmhearted and Greg showed us his farm and the way to South Point and the amazing Green Sand Beach. The yurt is fun and our daughter loved to be in it.
Before we even met Gail and Greg their pre-arrival invitation to socialize was a good omen. This Yurt and its interior are about as 5 star as you can get in terms of any camping I've ever done. Full view down to the Pacific. Great bed, fully stocked kitchenette evening sky beyond one's imagination. We stayed here for a week and found the location perfectly situated between Volcanoes Park, South Point and beaches where you can swim or snorkel. Gail's suggestions were well targeted and much appreciated. A newly opened section of the Volcanoes National Park is within minutes of this place. Greg was kind enough to give us a tour of his organic farm. Our stay included some of the best veggies on the Big Island, grown by our hosts!. The only problem for us was the roosters waking us early, but earplugs were provided which helped a great deal. Great folks in a beautiful location.
It's been a dream of mine for a while to stay in a yurt. Since I really like camping and my husband really dislikes it, staying in a yurt for a few days during our honeymoon seemed like a good compromise. We arrived near dusk and were warmly greeted by Gail, Greg, and their lovely furry kids. The yurt itself was very nicely appointed and had all the comforts we needed for our stay. I especially liked the plushy comforters on the bed. The location was a perfect home base to explore Volcanoes National Park, the green and black sand beaches, and South Point. The roosters were pretty noisy early in the morning, but we didn't mind them so much because to us, it really wasn't any different from hitting the snooze button over and over again like we routinely do every morning. There were earplugs provided if it bothered us too much. The citronella incense was much appreciated since I am apparently super tasty to mosquitoes. Overall, we had a really awesome stay and these were some of the best days so far we have had on the Big Island. The yurt even impressed my husband (camping-hater) and we would definitely stay here again.
We loved it. Gail and Greg are wonderful spirits. On our arrival Gail gave us some yummy lettuce from Gregs Farm with the wonderful name " Earth matters" which we visited on our departure day.
The Yurt was really luxurios with a wonderful comfy bed and a well equiped kitchenette. You have absolute privacy. There are roosters who prefers especially nights to communicate with each other. But Gail and Greg have told us before and have been well prepared and had some ear protectors for us.
I've never camped before. But this was a great expirience, because it doesn't felt like camping. It was a nice and clean surrounding.
And the stars at night.....!
If we're going to visit Big Island again, we'll be there again.
My husband and I arrived a few days before Christmas when traveling around the big island. This was clearly a busy time for Greg and Gail between being fully booked and preparing for the holidays. Despite that they were very accommodating and generous, inviting us for Christmas dinner and to watch Greg do a raku pottery firing. Overall the accommodations were good and very well appointed. Gail warned us that their would be roosters audible from the Yurt and she was right, but we experienced that elsewhere on the island as well. The kitchenette inside the yurt was convenient and the bed very comfy. We spent Christmas day enjoying the view of the ocean from the yurt and reading while it rained outside (uncommon for that part of the island). The location was central to a number of scenic hikes and beaches which we visited during our 4-night stay.
We had a great time. The yurt had everything we needed so it was like a 5 star camping experience. Loved the ceramics by Graig. The location was great and a great landing spot to explore the southern part of the island. Yurts are awesome!
Greg and Gail were very accommodating, but need to pay more attention to fine details. We only had one fork in our yurt and had to ask for more the next day. We run out of gas in the BBQ, I disconnected the tank and went to the house and asked for an other one. Greg gave me one which was empty as well.
Other than that the yurt was great, the roosters noisy but we enjoyed it and the location is good as well. Just some advice, bring your food, there are no decent restaurants in the village and I have not seen a grocery shop.
