Our beautifully restored 160 year-old barn is centrally located on Mt. Desert Island, approximately 15 minutes from the village of Bar Harbor and approximately 10 minutes from the entrance to Acadia National Park via an old farm road, aptly named 'The Crooked Road'.

The space
The 160 year-old barn once served as the livery stable for Town Hill, a one-time farming community which is in the township of Bar Harbor. We've converted the stable into two beautifully appointed apartments -- there's no other place quite like this on Mt. Desert. Soaring ceilings, hand hewn beams, cozy bedrooms, new kitchen and baths, loft space for tv and reading. We call this half of the barn 'The South Barn'. It's well-appointed and comfortable....and the baths and kitchen are brand new. The original ceiling and beams are smiling from all the love and attention! New kitchen, baths, flooring, heating, air, insulation and all the amenities create the perfectly livable blending of old and new. It's cozy, comfortable and well-appointed. The South Barn is truly a wonderful home-away-from-home and the perfect jumping off place to explore Mt. Desert Island.

Guest access
Our guests are welcomed to borrow our bikes, helmets, water bottles and bike rack for wonderful rides on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park. Feel free to wash a load of clothes in our laundry room. We'll make sure you have maps and guidebooks for use while you're visiting, and steer you towards our favorite hikes, bike rides, swimming spots, tours and restaurants.

Other things to note
Because we're at the intersection of three Island roads, our location is great for exploring the Island. Acadia NP, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and the 'Quiet Side' of MDI are all close by. Be prepared for summer traffic! Our once-quiet farm road is now a busy thorough-fare that runs from one end of the island to the other.

An Island bus service, supported by L.L. Bean, stops just across the road and provides free service into Bar Harbor and throughout the national park.

Bangor International Airport is 45 miles away -- approximately an hour's drive. The regional airport, Hancock County/Bar Harbor, is approximately 2 miles from our house and barn., public transport.

Neighborhood highlights

We're centrally located, making it easy to get from one side of the Island to the other. The Town Hill Market is right across the road, as is Atlantic Brewing Company. The Market has great sandwiches along with all kinds of other treats. Their liquor and wine selection is excellent, especially for a little country store, and the ice cream window is a traditional stop for the entire Island community. Atlantic Brewing offers tours and tastings and is next to a Barbeque spot, Mainely Meats. But there's more! Mother's Kitchen is another great sandwich spot down the road, and wonderful, Asian take-out is just down the way.

My husband, Paul and I both grew up in large, warm and open Southern families, with parents who welcomed everyone under the sun to join us for dinner, backyard picnics, homemade ice cream, and of course, holidays. By the time we were all rolling through university -- all of our college friends who didn't have a spot to land for the weekend or for semester breaks came home with us and joined the fun. Our world revolved around interesting people who thoroughly enjoyed a good laugh -- and a good time. When we married, it was second nature to us to continue the traditions we were brought up with and invite exchange students, visiting teachers, nieces and nephews, mothers, aunts and siblings to spend a week, a few months, or many years with our family in Atlanta, Georgia. And what a rich and wonderful life our family has had as a result! I spent my twenties living and working on Mt. Desert Island, off the Maine coast. I brought Paul to the Island soon after we married, but we made our home in Georgia. We spent 34 wonderful years in Atlanta, but Maine is where my heart is. My friends of 40+ years have welcomed Paul into our circle here. We all bike, hike, swim, kayak and picnic together in the summer. In the winter, it's all about snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, potluck dinners and long evenings visiting by the fire. This is our world and we treasure it. So....we've decided to combine our love of people, our love of place and the great joy we get from connecting with interesting folks to create a special space for people who venture to Maine to explore Acadia National Park and Mt. Desert Island. We're all about building connections: to friends, to the community, to the magical adventures the Island has to offer. Paul is a designer and an accomplished builder, who restored old houses and built new ones for over 25 years in Atlanta. I've spent my career as an HR executive, consultant and communications specialist. We've completed renovations on our 1847 farmhouse. Paul has converted our old barn into two apartments -- a pretty amazing transformation. We have plans to build additional cottage dwellings on our property. Our project keeps us busy and happy, and is the beginning of that little pocket community we've long envisioned.
