Welcome to The Good Karma House, Hilo's best value in accommodation and location. We’re beyond happy to host you during your Big Island vacation.
The Good Karma House is comprised of 3 vacation rental rooms surrounding 2 large common areas enjoyed by all, or quite often, just privately. As you can see from the pictures, the courtyard is ready for some screened in relaxation, and the kitchen is fully tiled with bamboo walls and ceilings, natural granite counter tops, a full sized fridge/freezer, propane stove top, and all the organic tea and coffee you can enjoy for breakfast. Sometimes, we're even able to provide bananas grown organically right here on the property.
The bathroom is fully tiled as well, and boasts an over sized shower to enjoy after a long day of Hawaiian adventures. Linens and fresh towels are provided for you.
There are a few guidelines here that are built on serving as good advice and helping you create an ideal Hawaiian vacation: (Theyre really only for about 5% of you, but still need to be posted haha)
1. Keep all food inside the refridgerator or freezer or your closed container.
2. Any spills should be cleaned up immediately.
3. Do not place any food into the garbage. It can be rinsed down the sink, stored, or thrown into the compost pile. Rules 1 - 3 are to prevent insects from entering the building. The only time insects are inside the building is if 1 - 3 arent followed :)
4. Please do not leave your personal items outside of your room unless theyre in use.
5. Please clean up the kitchen fully back to how you found it after every time you use it. Keep in mind, another guest may use it right after you and will blame the host if its not in a clean condition :)
6. Please email me and give me an expected time of your arrival. We do not have a front desk for check in and I am quite often not home, so please, let me know about when youll be arriving, then text my cell when youre on the way, and then when you arrive and I'll meet you at the front parking lot. Please do not walk down the side of the house looking for me :) Please don't plan to show up earlier than 3pm, as this is required to properly accomodate the guests before you.
7. Look at the pictures of the rooms before you reserve them. Please don't come with unrealistic expectations because you did not :)
8. If you need anything, please dont hesitate to ask me for it! :) i LOVE helping people make their Hawaiian vacations as fun as they can possibly be, and love meeting people from all over the world.

Interaction with Guests
Constantly because that's definitely one of the perks of the "job". :)
Its only 3/4ths of a mile from downtown, yet the closest residence is over 200 yards away.
The main bus terminal in Hilo is just a 20 minute walk away.
Other Things to Note
We do adventure tours too! See bottom of "The
The Good Karma House is a non smoking facility, but we do have an area for that at the front of the property. Moderate alcohol use is no problem. Please clean up your own use and be considerate of others' needs as well. Our dietary style leans heavily on a vegetarian lifestyle, but we are most welcoming of all tastes and cultures. Quiet time is from 10pm to 7am. Mahalo!!!
This is the dining area. Lit by candles and soft lights, tucked into the courtyard, and poised high above the jungle, you'll enjoy a most exquisite dining and social experience here.
We read the reviews so we knew what to expect - given that, it was good value for the price. My experience with other airbnbs is that they're like small, but professionally run, bnbs with the bonus of interacting with a host. This is more like crashing in a spare room of a share house - that is, everything is okay but there's recycling piling up on the bench, mysterious things abandoned in the fridge and the host keeps promising to sort out maintenance issues but doesn't actually get around to it. If you're on a budget and easy going, this place is great. If you have high expectations, it's probably not the place for you.
Note that at time of writing this room could not be locked while you were out for the day. Also two other rooms rented through airbnb share the same kitchen, bathroom and loungeroom (that is, you're never quite sure who is coming and going, and when). Not a problem for us, but worth knowing.
Ya know, it always amazes me how people feel the need to try and hurt a persons income by exaggerations... as if their point needs extra oomph to be valid... but ok. Obviously, if I as the host had my way... if it were up to me... the points you mention would be addressed. But the fact is, I don't own this place. The owner lives on another island and isn't willing to spend money on things like lights when a battery operated light will suffice... or getting a new door lock when people accidentally steal the keys all the time, and this is the safest property in town. Its $29 and $39 per night. Why spend so little and then complain when your expectations don't get met by the standards of a place at least twice as much? If you go on AirBnB and look for the lowest price possible, why complain when its not what you're used to? This is Hawaii, we're providing a very cheap place for people to stay because everyone else here (have you seen car rental prices?) gouges where ever they can. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world and live here too. If I cant come pay you personal attention, it's because I have a life, errands to run, friends, and like to go have fun too. I always tell everyone, if you need ANYTHING. IF ANYTHING is unacceptable, all you have to do is inform me and I'll do whatever I can to fix it. Instead, some people hear that, and seem to be afraid to mention anything as if it is putting me out. It's not. Instead theyll pretend to me like everything fine, then I hear about problems in the reviews.
People dont clean up after themselves. I am not responsible for this, unless I know about it. After they leave, I'll clean up after them of course. I don't go back there 3 times per day. Anyone who doesn't like this style, please don't ask for a reservation. Thanks. :)
I'm about to double the price, hire a maid to come every other day, and then less people will be able to afford and have fun on this Island.
Please consider your words before trying to harm an owners income. Thanks.
Very cool room, with only screen windows between you and the jungle (and the nightly frog concert-which ends up being a soothing sound to fall asleep to)! The bedroom, shared kitchen area and bathroom are all kept with the jungle/nature theme with lots of bamboo and stone/tile building materials. Overall a great airbnb experience, can't be beat for that price. It's definitely not squeaky clean, but that's one of the downsides of 'outdoors' living!
The location was great. There was free laundry, as promised. That's about all that was good about it. When we arrived (we called ahead of time as we were told), no one was there. I called several times; it was too hot to sit outside so we waited in the car for half an hour (wasting gas b/c we needed the AC) until Joe finally picked up. He sounded like he'd been sleeping. Nothing wrong with that, but when we emailed him with our check in time weeks ahead of time, I expect that he'd be ready. I understand that this is a cheap place; I read the reviews and decription and looked at the pictures. However, no where in this listing does it mention cockroaches. We found several cockroaches (one on our bed). There were geckos in the room at all times. The dishes were so few (if I remember correctly, two bowls, three plates, a few silverware) and there is no cupboard anywhere. They just sit out all the time. There's no microwave (not the end of the world). Half of the time the bathroom lights don't work. I had to bring our bike light to the bathroom to go at night. There is no fan in the bathroom, nor bathroom rug, so when you exit the shower, the floor just floods and never dries. The towels were all mildewy; we asked for new towels, they were also mildewy. There were no kitchen/bathroom hand towels upon arrival. The garbages weren't emptied upon arrival. We finally received hand towels and an empty garbage the next day. We didn't get a key for our door because apparently someone took the key with them. Why he couldn't get a replacement key from Ace or Home Depot I don't know, but when we left, our valuables in our room were not locked. The dogs that lived in the attached apartment building were nice, that was one bonus. Joe was moderately reachable, but everything was delayed. All in all, next time I will spend more for a nicer place.
Elizabeth could have reached me at any time by knocking on my door, and yes, I fell asleep from rare exhaustion and napped longer than I thought. She was one of the 1 in 20 who have a $200/night taste with a $29/night budget. It happens... Also, everyone should note, that if I take clean towels out of the dryer and give them to you, and you tell me a half hour later you need more because these ones smell like mildew, I'm not going to take care of you. This isnt a hotel, this is my private residence, and she was a guest in my home. We here in Hawaii are equals. There are no customers and servants. If anyone reads this and doesnt agree with me, please do not request a reservation. There are WAAAY more positive reviews than negative, and I'll stand by that. I'm not going out of my way to help someone who shows no respect, gratitude, or appreciation in her voice or tone. It's that simple and I stand by it. I'm a grown man, and shes a young and inexperienced woman, who just hasnt learned the value of the golden rule and Aloha yet. Just my humble opinion. She exaggerated or just plain misrepresented a lot, but I just feel no need to defend myself further. Have a nice day :)
A very nice place, a little challenging to find, but it's worth it! The room on the forest is amazing! The host was very helpful.
Joe is a nice host. However, the restroom lights were broken when we checked in. We had to use the flash light to take a shower and do everything. Other things are good.
