We enjoyed staying at Fatima's place. We didn't meet her - instead we met her parents who were very kind to us. Her father picked us from the airport and dropped us there on our last day, and her mother left us things such as eggs, milk, crackers, jam. They were contactable and available whenever we needed something. Two minor things: - Some bugs here and there, due to the nature of the surrounding area; - This is not the host's fault - the 3G coverage in the house was quite weak, sometimes inexistent. The mobile internet device was great in a way, because we could take it with us while we were traveling around the island, but while in the house (indoors or in the garden), it would take ages to open a single web page. We experimented using the internet from one of our mobile phones from the UK and we also struggled, which seems to confirm that the area has very weak mobile coverage. Thank you very much for everything!
This place is very cute - it's set back further out in the "country" but gave us a good feel of what it meant to be a local. If we had a car, this would not have been as much of a nuance. There was a little frustration with communication and trying to resolve an issue since the host was not on the island. Other than that, the place is very homey and provided us with a nice place to stay. The view from the rooftop is also great! I would recommend staying here.
Nice space in a smaller town very near to Sao Roque. 2 great restaurants in Sao Roque: Montanha and Casa Ancoura. The second a bit more pricey but more inventive. The Sao Roque swimming area is one of the best on the islands. The area is very convenient to all areas of the island. If you snorkel, spend a day in Lajes at the "lagoas". You'll be surprised what you see, wow! There is a very cool forest park between Sao Roque and prainha, the baia do canas is cool --you can walk the trail from the park or drive down, but be sure to walk all the way to the east end there is a small sand beach near a rickety looking ladder that goes up the cliff. I didn't climb the ladder, but the swim was excellent! So much to do, and Fatima and her parents make it very easy and comfortable for you!
This home is a lovely retreat. Fatima wasn't there, but her mother was lovely and showed us the beautiful historic home, brought us fresh eggs and fruit, and clearly cared deeply that we enjoyed our stay. The view of the ocean and the little garden make this a relaxing and wonderful place to spend some laid back time on Pico and have an authentic experience. It is close to S. Roque and the entire island is very drivable!
Everything was perfect and Fatima and her family are just wonderful! We rented the house and the car and it couldn't have gone better. Fatima collected us from the ferry port with the car and her father drove us back at the end of our stay. The house is exactly as it looks in the photos. The views of the ocean are amazing. There's a bar just down the hill from the house. We loved the terrace area to relax after a day's hiking. Thank you!
