Fatima's parents picked us up from the ferry, gave us Fatima's rental car, and showed us the house. They were very friendly and although they didn't speak English, it was easy to communicate with them. There were fresh eggs, bread, and cheese at the house so we didn't have to worry about shopping for breakfast. The house had everything we needed and we were very comfortable during our stay. Thanks so much!
Fatima was away so her father met us at the ferry terminal and guided us to the house. Her mother and father showed us everything, and left us fresh eggs, home made jam, and goodies - much appreciated. They don't speak English, and we don't speak more than a few words of Portuguese. The house is in a quiet neighborhood on a side street. It's what I imagine is a typical Portuguese house and yard, so it felt genuine. Reasonably well equipped, and clean. Note that it doesn't have internet. We ran into a problem the first evening with no hot water, and tried to text Fatima (we got a Portuguese sim card when we arrived) but her number is a Canadian one. So we had to go into Sao Roque at the visitor info centre to get wireless to send her a message that evening. There were delays in her responding, due to the Azores/Canada time zone difference, so the hot water wasn't fixed until the next afternoon. So I would recommend the house, but recommend asking Fatima if she will be on the island during your rental for real time support, or what other arrangements can be made.
Fatima's parents are very friendly. The place is, as it is described, an OLD stone house. Bathroom is tiny. The kitchen is not that well-equipped, a bit more (and cleaner) pots and pans would be useful. There are many ants and other little animals in the house, no matter how you try to keep them out. Also, the rooms aren't that clean. All in all, it is too expensive for what it is.
Fatima made us very welcome and her mother had left us some nice goodies. The house is absolutely delightful, very quaint and restful. The position was perfect for us, and we abandoned any idea of cooking at home to eat in the friendly bar at the end of the road with its delightful views. You do need a car, but walkers might want to take a taxi to the lake - Largoa do Capital - and then walk about 2km to the marked walk that passes the house. We were very happy here.
