About this listing
Come stay in our 100-year old Victorian, fully renovated for modern efficiency & a low carbon footprint, with lots of character and a bit of steampunk flare. Private room on the third floor with shared bath with our other listing.
You are sharing the house with us, the owners - this is not a separate apartment. We do have another listing on the same floor.
The front bedroom includes a queen-sized bed and memory foam mattress, large windows, and blackout curtains.
Your third floor bathroom includes the original clawfoot bathtub, with shower fixtures. You will be sharing the bathroom with any other Air BnB guests - the family has a private bathroom on the second floor, so does not use the third floor.
Wireless high speed internet is throughout the house and free.
Our house was occupied by families and artists, students and punk rockers, before we bought it a few years ago, and we keep this happy legacy going. (The mural in the stairwell was painted by previous tenants.) The first floor of the house is inspired by the ship Serenity in the series "Firefly".
We renovated our house to be as energy efficient as is possible in a retrofit. It is well insulated with modern windows throughout. We compost, recycle, and have a solar array that generates most of the house electricity. The rest is purchased from The Energy Co-op a cooperative supplier of electricity from renewable resources, mostly wind.
Please free to hang out on the first floor where you can borrow a book, movie, or some board games. You are welcome to relax in the hammock on the front porch, or at the bench/picnic table in the back patio, under our grape vines and a beautiful locust tree.
The modern kitchen is shared with us. Please check with us if you are planning on cooking a big meal so that we don't have too many cooks in the kitchen. We keep coffee and tea well-stocked for our guests!
Interaction with Guests
We are a family of four, and are native and near-native Philadelphians. We will be happy to help with directions, any questions you might have, and suggestions for outings, including off-the-beaten path. Our neighborhood, West Philadelphia / University City, has lots to offer, but the rest of Philadelphia is in easy reach through the public transportation system.
We are a working family with young kids. You are welcome to come and go on your own schedule - we are usually deep sleepers, but please respect that quiet hours - 9pm through 7am.
A subway station and major bus routes are nearby, and can get you to downtown Philadelphia in 10 minutes. The house is also in easy walking distance of the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and the University of the Sciences. Grocery stores, entertainment, coffee shops, recreation activities / spaces, live theater, restaurants, food co-op, and Clark Park are also very close-by - no need to even use a car. There is convenient street parking and we have indoor bicycle storage.
We are a few blocks to the Market Frankford (Blue) line 46th street station it is a 5 min walk from our house. The 34 trolley is also a few block south from our house and is a pleasant walk. There are bus lines on Spruce and Walnut and Chestnut that can quickly take you to and from Center City. We often just use (website hidden) maps for directions it is pretty accurate for Public transit.
Other Things to Note
We have some very friendly cats. We keep them out of the guest rooms.
We are very easy-going, but past hosting experience has taught us there are a few things we have to be really clear on, so please read the below.
We are a NO SHOES house. You can leave your shoes by the front door or keep them in your room, but please do not wear shoes in the house.
Our house is "fragrance free" - no perfume/cologne/scented oils. They linger in our house long after you have left. Scented shampoo and soap are not a problem.
Please no candles or incense.
You are welcome to use our kitchen during your stay. Please label anything you put in the fridge.
Feel free to use microwave, toaster oven, and stove for tea and french press.
We are vegetarian; you do not have to be. Please do not plan on cooking meat in our house.
During your stay, please respect that the second floor is the bedrooms of our family. We have two children.
Our home is an old house. If you are coming and going during quiet hours, that is no problem, but please remember that our bedrooms are right below you.
No smoking anywhere inside or around the house.
Terrence, Amy, Joe and Calyx all of them were really extremely nice and helpful and recommended great places that I should visit. Actually I had other two places that I booked through Airbnb in Philly, but I cancelled it and extended here more. So, I have stayed here almost three weeks. I'm sure that once you stay here, you cannot stay any other place.
I could not have been made more welcome by Terrence and his family. I have felt totally at home. The room was better than the pictures on Airbnb. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to stay here. I'm going to miss their lovely cats.
Terrence and family were great hosts. The house was safe, quiet and convenient, and we found accommodations to be exactly as described. If you drive, you will find the location to be ideal, although be aware that parking was 2 blocks away in a quieter area (though we never found any overt security issues). We enjoyed our stay very much.
My experience staying with Terrence and his fam was good. All I needed was a place to lay my head, which was close to my Philly friends, and this fit the bill and exceeded expectations. He met me at the door and even carried my 60-pound bag up three flights of stairs. His family was kind, and nice to talk to. He also provided me with dinner recommendations and a coupon for a place right around the corner.
Thanks for the hospitality!
Great people, great place! The room is spacious and well lit, the bed comfortable. There were a lot of thoughtful touches that made me feel welcome and at ease. The air conditioner kept us comfortable even though it was sweltering outside.
Terrence and Amy were wonderful hosts. They are both very familiar with their neighborhood and green technology, and I enjoyed talking with them and learned some new garden techniques I'm looking to apply at home. I will definitely contact them again if I come back to Philadelphia!
Terrence was very welcoming during our stay and gave us hints and tips for enjoying our time in Philadelphia. The room is nice and spacious, with a comfortable bed. We really liked the area of the house as it was in a nice area with friendly people and close to shops and not far from the train station.
This was our fist ever airbnb experience. Terrence and his family were very welcoming and understanding when we told them we were running late to get to their house. It is very easy to get to their house via public transport from the city centre, and very cheap to! Whilst staying with Terrence we could choose to stay in our room, or socialise with their family. They also gave us some great advice about the rest of our trip. The room was very spacious with its own air conditioning unit, and was exactly how I expected it to be from the listing. If we ever visited Philadelphia again we would definitely go back and stay with there.
