The Space

Close to UPenn, Drexel, etc. Easy access to public transportation - downtown in 10 minutes! Kids welcome!

You can rent one bedroom (sleeps 2) or both bedrooms (sleeps 4). Look at my profile to see the other listing. Please inquire for entire third floor rental.

During your stay, you are sharing the house with us, the owners - this is not a separate apartment.

The front huge bedroom includes a queen-sized bed and memory foam mattress. The second smaller bedroom has a daybed that expands to a king-sized bed with memory foam mattress - you can use it as additional accommodations or as your own "living room" during your stay.

Your third floor bathroom includes the original clawfoot bathtub, with shower fixtures.

Wireless high speed internet is throughout the house and free.

Please free to hang out on the first floor where you can borrow a book, movie, or some board games. You are welcome to relax in the hammock on the front porch, or at the bench/picnic table in the back patio, under our grape vines and a beautiful locust tree.

Traveling with kids? No need to bring toys - our kids have plenty to share.

The modern kitchen is shared with us. Please check with us if you are planning on cooking a big meal so that we don't have too many cooks in the kitchen.

Our house was occupied by families and artists, students and punk rockers, before we bought it a few years ago, and we keep this happy legacy going. (The mural in the stairwell was painted by previous tenants.) The first floor of the house is inspired by the ship Serenity in the series "Firefly".

We renovated our house to be as energy efficient as is possible in a retrofit. It is well insulated with modern windows throughout. We compost, recycle, and have a solar array that generates most of the house electricity. The rest is purchased from The Energy Co-op a cooperative supplier of electricity from renewable resources, mostly wind.

A subway station and major bus routes are nearby, and can get you to downtown Philadelphia in 10 minutes. The house is also in easy walking distance of the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and the University of the Sciences. Grocery stores, entertainment, coffee shops, recreation activities / spaces, live theater, restaurants, (email hidden)-op, and Clark Park are also very close-by - no need to even use a car! There is convenient street parking and we have indoor bicycle storage.

Interaction with Guests

We are a family of four, and are native and near-native Philadelphians. We will be happy to help with directions, any questions you might have, and suggestions for outings, including off-the-beaten path. Our neighborhood, West Philadelphia / University City, has lots to offer, but the rest of Philadelphia is in easy reach through the public transportation system.

We are a working family with young kids. You are welcome to come and go on your own schedule - we are usually deep sleepers, but please respect that quiet hours are necessary for our health & sanity - 9pm through 7am. (Exception for babies.)

Getting around

We are a few blocks to the Market Frankford (Blue) line 46th street station it is a 5 min walk from our house. The 34 trolley is also a few block south from our house and is a pleasant walk. There are bus lines on Spruce and Walnut and Chestnut that can quickly take you to and from Center City. We often just use (website hidden) maps for directions it is pretty accurate for Public transit.

Other Things to Note

We have some very friendly cats. We keep them out of the guest rooms.

  • A super host in a good neighborhood. Very clean and comfortable. The best bed I've ever slept on. The room had air conditioning! The host family were great people. When I have friends come to Philadelphia I will pay for them to stay here.

  • Spacious, clean, and vibrant room/house! Can't ask for more.

  • Terrence and Amy were terrific hosts. The house is fantastic in all of its detail, and the accommodations were pleasant, clean, quiet, and comfortable. The neighborhood was also fantastic. I only wish that I had been there for more than a few days. I would definitely book with Terrence again on a return trip to Philly.

  • Thank you for welcoming me into your home, it was an amazing experience and you and the family are wonderful. The experience was worth every penny. What you see in the pic you get and more.

  • My boyfriend and I had a pleasant stay at Terrence's Eco-friendly home. Prior to our arrival, Terrence provided us with all the details needed for our stay and was nice enough to let us check-in a little bit early. He was friendly and willing to recommend us places to see/eat. His cat Cosmic and and son were also very good hosts.

The room was large and cozy- just as described in the listing. The interesting books and board games were a nice touch. Conveniently, visitor guides were nicely stacked on the desk, along with a surprise gift card to a local Popsicle shop. Towels and toiletries were provided (something I didn't expect). My only complaint is that one could hear the bathroom noise- the existing door to the bathroom is closed off, however, through the space under the door--all sound can be heard. Since the guest staying in the room across showered at 6am, our sleep was disrupted. Other than the minor inconvenience, the room is pretty great and perfect for a stay in Philly.

    Response from Terrence:

Glad you enjoyed your stay. We sound proofed the door as you suggested. It seems to have worked pretty well. Thanks!

  • We loved staying with Terrence and Amy, and feel we have made some new friends. Our adventure started out by arriving late due to Philly traffic. And even thought it was late, Amy was most gracious in welcoming us and getting us settled in.
Their renovated Row home is very Philly, with a large front stoop to hang out on. The room was spacious and tidy, stocked with books and "what to do in Philly" information. The bed is one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The bathroom has a charming old bathtub and all the amenities you would ever need.
Plenty of room in the kitchen to make our breakfast and coffee and have great conversations.
The neighborhood is great as well. Nice older homes, with a thriving retail, food, and bar scene. We were doing a show in center city and access for us to the show was really easy. Philly also has good public transit, Terrence and Amy can you direct you to where to go and what to use to fully utilize this service.
All in all it is one of the most pleasant experiences we have had with an Airbnb host and if your travels bring you to Philly, stay with these folks!

  • I'd a very relaxing stay at Terrence and his family's home. The room on the third floor is big, comfortable, well-lit, tidy and equipped with a firm foam bed. Their home is located in a great tree-lined neighborhood with many cafes and restaurants and is very convenient to buses, trolleys and train. This is a highly recommended accommodation in West Philly near Penn.

  • I had a nice stay at Terrence's place. He was very accommodating when I got in late on Friday night, and the room and set-up was exactly as advertised. The location was good too--an easy 10 minute walk to Penn.

  • Terrence and Amy have a lovely home and two gorgeous kids. They were all friendly and hospitable, while being respectful of my time (I was there during a busy week).

Their place is in a quiet, residential area of West Philly. I found everything I needed within a block - restaurants, coffee shops, CVS, parking, a "we do it for you" laundromat, ...It is a 10-min walk from Penn, and slightly longer to the Science Center. The house is bright and colorful, and the bedroom is well-lit, quiet and comfortable. They were nice enough to provide guests with towels, shampoos, soaps etc. (and a laser pointer in case one of the cats makes it's way into be bedroom!). All in all, a great stay! Watch out for the chirping clock in the bathroom though :).

About
I'm a native of Philadelphia, and have lived in my current neighborhood for 15 years. I really enjoy hosting airbnb guests and can offer good tips on where to eat and the best way to get around the city. A number of our guests have stayed with us while moving to Philadelphia and searching for an apartment. We can offer advice on getting established in the city and the best places to look for good deals on apartments. A little more about myself, I'm an electrical engineer and materials scientist, I enjoy creating and building new things. I'm a fan of sustainable design and lifestyles. I'm currently building a nanotechnology instrumentation startup and finishing my Ph.D. in materials science and engineering. My partner and my two kids are great hosts too, and are always working on interesting projects.
