Interaction with Guests
We live on the same property so are always available to help you with any needs, but are "far enough" away to where you have complete privacy and do not need to be in contact with us if you don't want to! Directions are easy and the house will be ready before you get there.
A rental car is highly recommended as there are so many great things on this island that you will need to experience! There is parking in front of the guest house and a paved driveway. We are located about 40 minutes south of the airport.

Kyla and her family were fantastic hosts. Very prompt to respond to questions we had when planning, and provided an excellent welcome packet with directions to the guesthouse.
When we arrived, the house was ready, clean and we were able to instantly begin our vacation -- enjoying the view, especially. I cannot put words to how nice it was to sit out on the back deck with such a wide, panoramic view in total seclusion watching the sunset each afternoon and evening. The futon couch and patio furniture were comfortable and thoughtfully arranged, which made it possible for my husband and I to each find our own special spot, or to cozy up together.
The house provides an authentic Hawaii experience, as it is on a ridgeline surrounded by many fruit trees, native animals and delightful little gekkos to entertain you. We shared many nights making meals and grilling out together and found the kitchen to have everything we needed. The bedroom was comfortable and breezy at night and we were impressed with the water pressure in the bathroom -- unusual for a vacation home. The living area was great for kicking back and we enjoyed many lazy moments snuggled up on the comfortable couch.
Perfectly situated between Captain Cook and Honaunau, we found the location to be one of the best things about this guesthouse. Most mornings we woke up early to snorkel at Honaunau, which was just a short drive down the road and is known as one of the best reefs on this side of the island. The area is relaxed and has a local vibe, with many small coffee shops and cafes just a short distance away. In particular, we fell in love with Da Poke Shack and highly recommend it to future guests. Likewise, skip Safeway and consider doing your shopping at Choicemart (a very short drive from the house) as the selection is more varied and local.
Overall, we had a perfect vacation and felt that Kyla and her family were great hosts. They quickly answered questions, we had no issues, and they were thoughtful in how they put together their house. We had total privacy as well during our stay, which is always nice.
We're already trying to find time for a repeat trip in the next few months. It was that great.
Note: We did not have an issue with pests inside, cleanliness or wifi, as another reviewer mentioned. Simply put, we had a perfect stay.
My wife and I spent a week at the Ohia Guesthouse in August. All in all, this is a beautiful and private place in a great part of the island.
The best part is the outside balcony and hot tub. It was a highlight of the trip to sit out there and watch the sun set each night. The place is also very quiet and private. Nature is all around and the views are stunning.
On the down side, the place was not clean when we arrived. Within a few minutes of walking around, the bottom of our socks were black with dirt. There was food left in the microwave as well. We spent several hours of our own time cleaning the floors and vacuuming.
When we arrived, a bathroom window without a screen had been left open and there were loads of bugs in the place, including ants, centipedes, and a massive cane spider in the bedroom. The screens on the windows have numerous holes, so geckos and spiders pretty much come and go as they please. However, after cleaning the place, the bug problem was definitely better than when we first arrived.
We were also disappointed that although the listing page indicated there was WiFi, there was no WiFi to be found (which, needless to say, made planning activities and finding restaurants, etc, much more difficult).
Lars, we are very glad you and your wife enjoyed the Ohia house and would be happy to have you back with us again.
We are also very sorry you were disappointed with the cleanliness. We definitely want each and every guest to be comfortable, enjoy their stay and are happy to take any requests, and the best way to make sure of this is to communicate with us.
In Hawaii we do have more insects than other places, and we hope that each guest understands this. We will make sure that all the screens are fixed or replaced so as to keep as many bugs out as possible for your comfort.
We do indeed have wifi, there is a router next to the tv - but like with all technology sometimes it just decides to be silly and act up. If this ever happens, please let us know asap and we will get it fixed!
Again, we sincerely apologize for any discomfort or trouble you may have experienced. For future guests, please don't hesitate to call or stop by the owners house so that they may correct any concerns.
