Interaction with Guests
Depends! We may be stay at my sister's or out of town. I also have a friend that could come by, if necessary or if the guest wants to hang we will try if we are not working :)
This neighborhood is BED-STUY / borderline BUSHWICK, Brooklyn. I love this area. It's not so pretentious and our neighbors are friendly in our street and building. There is a mix of people that live around here, mostly from the Caribbean.
-SAFE neighborhood! Police station on same block, so it can get quiet during the week and more lively on the weekends.
-MORE LAID BACK, Residential, and less people than Manhattan!
We also live on the SAME BLOCK as a POLICE STATION, so it can be a quiet street! A lil more lively on weekends. YOU CAN GET TO THE CITY WITHIN 20 mins!!!! or 10 to Williamsburg!!
Broadway is the street running along under the J train (block away) and has many shops!! Hardware store, Bargain store (has everything!), a fish market, Family dollar, Rainbow, Hair and Nail salon, pizza, ice cream, a Chinese buffet, Radio Shack, Tmobile, manyyyyy corner stores/bodegas, Bank of America (next block on your way to the triain) and a supermarket called "Associated" on Broadway, which is fairly decent!
-Trader Joes is in downtown brooklyn (we take the b52 bus on Gates all the way to Fulton mall in downtown brooklyn, walk to Court st and make a right on it. It's at Atlantic and Court st).
-ONLY ONE BLOCK FROM the J Train (GATES stop)! yet Far enough to NOT hear the train at night!!! Only 15-20 mins to the city (Lower East Side)!!
-There usually is PARKING on my block OR around the corner! Just make sure to move your car during certain hours during the week (I think the sign side 'No parking on our side of the street TUE & FRI from 11am-12:30pm') So remember to move your car! or you'll get a ticket!
ALSO, if you take the J train (away from Manhattan) 3 stops to Broadway Junction, there is the L train which also takes you to East Williamsburg/Bushwick, Williamsburg, and 14th st (East and West Village) in the city. You can also get on the A, C at Broadway Junction.
OH, and sometimes I take the b52 bus (on Gates ave, directly behind and parallel to our street). I sometimes take it to downtown Brooklyn or further north to the L train (Myrtle-Whykoff) which is a bit closer than Broadway Junction.
Other Things to Note
-keys are marked w/the numbers 1,2,3: rubber key for 1st gate, copper for the 2nd and silver for the apt. Silver key opens both doors to living room and spare room.
-REMOTES on WALL: White remote on wall is for projector, Black remote is for the sound and you have to turn on the playstation/use its controller to watch anything. We have NETFLIX!
-We're also be happily glad to recommend on places to see, eat and go out! (especially if you're a vegetarian/vegan, Rebecca knows good places)
-we expect whoever is staying in our place to treat it like how we treat it:
-please remove your shoes at the door,
-clean up after yourself,
-don't leave dishes in sink (we don't want any nyc pests!!!),
-Take out trash and recycle. We have bins and more blue bags for the recycling.
-Smoke out a window or go outside, please!
ALSO, THIS IS IMPORTANT: Our landlord's relatives live in this building, so if they ask PLEASE SAY that YOU ARE OUR FRIENDS, JUST VISITING NYC. We don't see them much so, it will be fine. Plus, they are very friendly people. Say hi if they see you!
-NO DRUGS. Alcohol is fine as long as you don't get crazy and trash the place or make a lot of noise.
You can play music during the day semi loud, just not passed, maybe 11pm! (Neighbors downstairs have kids) so also don't be too loud during the week.
Although Im an animal LOVER, No pets please (it's part of our lease and will leave hair anywhere UNLESS it's caged or a fish?
Please don't bring a bunch of people over! This is not a party house.
ALSO!!! I have a lot of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the dead) figurines and skulls. My family celebrates it since we are Mexican. It is a catholic holiday in which you honor your dead loved ones and celebrate life, so don't think we are into voodoo or anything. So hopefully you respect my stuff by not touching, stealing or judging me :) It's my culture!
Don't touch projector! We have easy remotes to use to turn on the projector which is hooked up to the playstation and surround sound. It can get really loud so try and turn down when it does.
Sorry for the rules. Be respectful, especially our neighbors. We love our home. Hope you will enjoy it and your stay in New York! It's a fun town!!
About the Host, Rebecca & James
I am Rebecca and I moved to NYC over 7 years ago from Houston, Texas. I'm of Mexican descent but born and raised in TEXAS from a big family. I am an assistant preschool teacher here in Brooklyn.
My husband is James and we got married Friday the 13th, April 2012. He is from England and this is our first apartment together.
We love our new place and we love traveling. We had roommates at our other place, but decided to get a new apartment. However, NYC-livin' can be expensive so we thought we'd join this site!
Rebecca - I love music! Punk rock, swing, 50's doo wop, rockabilly, ska, Industrial, hip hop, The Smiths! I love going to shows, 80s clubs, traveling, helping others and I love my job. I got my degree in Early Childhood Education, and my preschool is great. Kids are hilarious. In a way, it's a dream job (you get a lot of holidays and summers off !!) Therefore, I love to travel. I met my husband few years ago in Williamsburg, Brooklyn when he vacationed here (he's from Birmingham, England, but moved here from London).
James -loves all kinds of films!! (He got a degree in it), a filmmaker, loves the Libertines and the Rolling Stones, has traveled the world, very fun and friendly.
We are in our late 20's, we like to drink so it's ok if you do too and we love meeting new people.
