About This Listing
Rooftop terrace with dipping pool and seating area creates a relaxing retreat! Pool has recirculating fountain pump. Lighting and electrical outlets also here.
Casa Cho'hol is a renovated colonial jewel featuring the tall ceilings and patterned pasta tile floors that grace many of Merida's historic homes. The front living room has comfortable seating and tv/dvd cabinet..A light filled gallery leads from the living room to the dining area and first bedroom, bath and kitchenette. Another bedroom is in a separate building in the back with its own bathroom. The house feels spacious even though it is compact and easy to clean for a comfortable and affordable trouble-free vacation.
Outside, between the two buildings,is a small garden with two fruit trees, a fountain and a staircase up to an airy bamboo-topped roof terrace with a view to the sunrise..the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee. A new dipping pool is located on the roof terrace with recirculating fountain. Size is approx 4X6 feet so just the right size to relax after a long day of sightseeing around town.Built-in seating offers more room for entertaining guests and the new tile floor is perfect for yoga or exercise if that's one of your interests! A covered patio downstairs also provides a bistro table and chairs to sit if you don't want to go all the way up to the roof.
Cho'hol is ideally located withing walking distance of both Paseo Montejo to the north, Santa Ana Park with its outdoor dining and fresh produce market as well as the Santiago Park to the southwest...with additional markets, restaurants, shops and activities all nearby. The City calendar is always brimming with many free or low cost cultural activities and there are many options for tours to nearby archaeological sites and historic areas. Beaches are easy to reach via bus. All in all, Merida has the perfect combination of urban living and nearby rural villages and beaches for visitors to explore.
Cho'hol is just a 2 block walk from the Merida English Library...You can check their schedule of events on their website.
A note regarding fees:
Monthly and weekly rate does not include costs for electricity which is billed separately upon departure. We can give guests an all inclusive rate if they prefer so be sure to ask if that's important to you. Electricity costs are variable, mainly depending on how often you use air conditioning...but generally $30-$50 per month is typical.
Due to the small size of the garden, we do not accept pets of any kind.
Smoking is permitted outside ONLY! The house is non smoking throughout.
Property was as profiled, although would advise someone with a car or able/willing walkers.
Lovely property, nicely furnished and practical. Beds are comfy.
Unfortunately the address details on here are inaccurate, meaning we stood on the street for almost two hours waiting.
Bettye was there to welcome us though when we finally found it.
We also had a problem with the toilet cistern overfilling whilst we were there, which flooded the bathroom floor. We let Bettye know and she came round the next morning and fixed it immediately, so no problem for us,
In a quiet part of the historic centre, be prepared for. 5-10 min walk through v quiet streets at night in order to get to a multitude of restaurants and bars in the centre.
The dipping pool on the roof is very welcome after a hot day, but is not heated at all, so Only really usable if the sun has been hot enough to warm it. We found on cloudy days it was a little too chilly for comfort!
Bettye's place is as charming as it looked in the photos and the high ceilings made it feel much more spacious than it looks. 3 of us were comfortable and cool. Bettye was away for most of our stay but left excellent information and a caretaker we could easily get hold of when we had qustions.
The neighbourhood is great. The house was surprisingly quiet apart from the living room which is right on the street -- but a room we didn't use often. It is close to the Merida English Library and La68 Cutural Centre. The delightful French, Bistro Culturel is also close and across the street from the 'juice guy' who presses fresh orange and grapefruit juice daily for a nominal price. Other good restaurants close by. There is a Yoga Studio right across the street that also offers T'ai Chi, Tango, Shiatsu massage and acupuncture treatments. We liked being about a 10 min walk from the chaos of the main square and about 5 min. from the elegant Paseo Montejo.
The kitchen is really a kitchenette; no oven, but who wants to slave over a hot stove when it's hot outside and you're on holiday, so we found it quite adequate for our needs. The only think we really missed was an electric kettle to heat water for tea.
Although we arrived late in the evening, Bettye welcomed us in person with late night restaurant suggestions and directions to grocery stores and markets. She brought us water during the week and offered to arrange an airport taxi for our departure. Great convenient Centro location.
We were effectively charmed ! Greeted by Agustin ( Bettye's friend )
with a map and answers to our many questions . The vicinity is quiet and safe within 30min. walk to the Centro .
The house with high ceilings , small garden ,fountain-fish pond , and terrasse on the roof with small pool is very near luxury , not to mention the cute 2nd bedroom casita w/bth in the back .
The house respects the historical part of Merida with taste !
Highly recommendable !!!!
All is as it appears and described........Bettye and David facilitated our five weeks stay with both a professional hand and a personal energy which always makes life in motion so much easier and enjoyable...big thanks B&D; However, what can not be conveyed via the web is the subtle mix of privacy, ascetics, safety, comfort, convenience, quietude, cultural authenticity, host accessibility, transportation options and ect.....do your homework and you will realize the uniqueness of this location and dwelling. We desired to find and experience a home away from home for our stay in Merida ....and, it was realized!
Bettye waited for us at the house when we arrived and showed us everything in person. She also was really good about responding to emails and explaining local touristy things.
