The Space

Stocked with linens (bedding, towels, comforters, etc.), dishes/cookware, and a variety of Portland essentials: local coffee, local beer, hiking books, poker chips, word & card games, and an array of DVDs. Kitchen is fully equipped for cooking; Trader Joe's & Safeway within walking distance. Lara's favorite feature: the covered front porch – perfect for people-watching, even in the rain.

Guest Access

-Cable-speed WiFi throughout the house
-Full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher.
-Living room with TV & DVD player
-Iron and ironing board
-Hair dryer

Interaction with Guests

Your hosts, Rick and Lara, live in the house next door, and are available to answer/address any questions. They’re also happy to offer tips on entertainment, food, and outdoor recreation around Portland and beyond.

Lara loves to hike, kayak, bike, do yoga, and –as of this summer– paddle board!  She owns way too many trail guides, and has bikes and yoga mats you can borrow. (If you want a ride to her favorite Bikram yoga studio across town, she'll be happy to sweat with you.) Rick is more of an indoor type; if you need help with the WiFi, are in search of the city’s best bookstores, or have any other questions regarding your stay, he’s happy to help. (And don’t worry: if it’s peace and solitude you seek, they’ll happily give you that, as well.)

The Neighborhood

Trader Joe's is just down the street; also within walking distance: a local pizza place, a coffeehouse, and a great sandwich shop. More foodie/art goodness is located on nearby Hawthorne Street.

Getting around

We're within walking distance of all major bus lines, offering fast access to most parts of town!

  • Rick and Lara's was great. The location is fantastic, the price was affordable, and they made sure we had everything we needed, making themselves available for contact and advice. They let us borrow some of their kitchen equipment. I couldn't recommend them more highly.

  • While the space was definitely cute and cozy, we thought the overall cleanliness could be greatly improved. A little bleach in the bathroom would go a long ways towards dealing with the pink and black mold in the shower and on the shower curtain. The place also hadn't been dusted/vacuumed all that well either. The kitchen was nice and spacious, although we were surprised that there wasn't a recycling bin. (We just left our recycling in a pile next to the garbage can instead.) We also missed having a toaster, and a full-size coffee pot. The internet was painfully slow (sometimes taking 5 mins to refresh a simple (website hidden) map.) The beds were comfortable, however, and the rooms were nice and bright, and we loved the front porch. We'd be back if only the place were cleaned a bit better!!

    Response from Rick & Lara:

We generally don’t comment on reviews. Our guests’ open, honest feedback is more than valuable – it’s crucial. It keeps us focused on providing the best possible experience.

We also know that certain things are relative – no two experiences are the same because no two people are the same. Expectations and personal preferences vary from person to person – to some degree, it’s unavoidable.

Because of this, we’ll limit our response to only one item in the above review: the issue of cleanliness.

It’s a point of pride that all exposed counters, sinks, and faucets are cleaned and bleached prior to a guest’s arrival. Exposed bathroom surfaces, including the toilet and shower, are first scrubbed with standard cleansers, then with a mixture of bleach and water, and then rinsed with clean water. This bleaching didn’t play well with the previous shower curtain liner…its red-patterned design bled through (rather badly), leaving the black-and-pink splotches you noticed. We should have replaced the curtain prior to your visit. You have our apologies for not doing so.

We do sincerely thank you for your feedback – and for choosing our place. It’s never taken for granted.

P.S. We agree that our local internet provider leaves a lot to be desired. They have zero competition at the moment, so there’s not much incentive for them to get better. Fingers crossed that Google Fiber comes to Portland soon!

  • Rick and Lara were great hosts. Communication was great. All of the keys were labeled and there were clear instructions on which went to wear. Great location that is within convenient walking distance to restaurants and stores. I would definitely recommend this house to friends.

  • I booked this house for my parents while they were visiting. Didn't get a chance to meet Rick and Lara personally, but I very much appreciated Rick's quick responses and helpfulness. The house itself is very spacious. Nice for a family. The fridge was stocked with a few handy and tasty items. It's on a very busy street, but it's nice that Trader Joe's, Safeway and a good bank with an ATM are nearby. Plus, the area is up-and-coming fast --more fun spots and good places to eat are moving in by the minute. Thank you, Rick and Lara!

  • If you're looking for a convenient place to stay, this is it. Richard and Lara were easy to work with through the reservations process, accommodating and unobtrusive during our stay. Perfect location. Easy access to all cool SE neighborhoods - Alberta, Hawthorne and Belmont - and close to public transportation. A few good restaurants and a grocery store within walking distance.

  • The hosts were great! The place was about a 30 bus ride from DT.
I love wonderful floors, and how sunny the place was.
I plan on staying there again.

  • Awesome place to stay. Could not have asked for more for the price. Heater was very efficient. Restroom was clean. Linen closet was fully stocked. Warm blankets on bed. Slippers provided. Card games available. Books to read. Just GREAT!

Unfortunately, I did not get to meet Richard and Laura - maybe next time!

  • My family stayed here one night in order to come and visit me. Rick was great and stocked the fridge with some local beer and small breakfast things. The house was really clean and well cared for and Rick & Lara thought of everything that a guest might need (from Portland guides to labeling the locks).
House is in a great neighborhood and within walking distance to several grocery stores, restaurants, and bars. The house is located on a pretty busy street, so the traffic can be kind of noisy if you're not used to it.
Overall great listing and perfect for our needs!

  • We had a wonderful stay with Rick and Lara. The house was just as described, if not better, and made an excellent home away from home.

The rooms were cozy, the shower warm, and the kitchen perfect for doing our own quick meals and such.

As described, the porch is GREAT rain or shine. I enjoyed sitting watching the neighborhood come alive as I drank my coffee in the morning.

They're also in a great location, where there is plenty to do or see within walking distance, buses are nearby, and if you're in a car, most areas of town aren't more than 15-20 minutes away it seemed.

We plan on visiting Portland again soon, and Rick and Lara's will certainly be the first place we look while traveling in the area.
