The Space

My place features a bedroom with super comfortable California King-sized bed with comforter, design-y and home-y living-room/dining area, a small, tidy kitchen with a new refrigerator, and amazing water pressure in the nice, warm (or even hot) shower. For emailing and planning your next move, there's WiFi available at my place as well as at more than a few local cafés. My place is a perfect spot for a weekend stay in the city or for the on-the-go tourist stopping by San Francisco for his/her first time!

You'll have all the niceties that will make you feel welcome: hardwood floors, soft towels, kitchen gadgets, pillows, blankets, and super interesting books for your perusal during your stay. There's plenty of room (closet, room divider, fridge, etc.) for you to make yourself at home. Hit Bi-Rite for some groceries and heat up something for breakfast - or reheat some leftovers! Enjoy some wine - you've got all the glasses you'll need. Take a load off after your day of running around SF - plug your smart phone into the stereo and play some relaxing tunes. Or rock out - but not too loud - it's a small apartment building with neighbors, kids, etc.

Guest Access

The apartment is away from the street. You'll be on the second residential floor, facing other residential buildings.

Laundry - right down the street on Divisadero - Launderland - clean, and features an attendant.

Interaction with Guests

You'll have privacy - my apartment is all yours.

The Neighborhood

You'll be near many of the hip, unique neighborhoods San Francisco has to offer.

Just a one-block hike up the hill to San Francisco’s famous Postcard Row and the splendid architecture of the Alamo Square Historic District. More than that: You'll be walking distance to NOPA, Alamo Square, Golden Gate Park, Lower Haight, Haight & Ashbury, and Hayes Valley. Surrounded by several great restaurants, a few fun neighborhood bars and many independent retailers.
Close and convenient to:
- Famous SF restaurants NOPA and Nopalito
- The Mill - featuring incredible coffee and baked goods
- Premier live music venue, The Independent
- Art Bar and home to a vast whiskey collection - Madrone Art Bar
- Craving Chicago Pizza? Got you covered at Little Star Pizza
- Newly opened Bi-Rite Market offering organic and locally produced goods and the best ice cream in town!
- Café Mojo - enjoy bistro sandwiches, local coffees/beers/wines on their sidewalk parklet
- Bar Crudo - if you'(email hidden) fan, this is your spot
- Weekend? There are two farmer's markets nearby
- Laundry? Large, very clean (with attendant) Launderland is right around the corner
- The list could go on an on - Absinthe, Jardiniere, Bistro Central Parc, State Bird Provision, and Zuni ALL ARE IN WALKING DISTANCE
- Stretch your legs - The Golden Gate Park Panhandle is 3 blocks away with paved trails for biking, more trails for running, and plenty of space to relax and enjoy outdoors

Getting around

Close to a lot of public transit lines - including MUNI Bus lines:
24 Divisadero (1/2 block away) - to the Castro and Pacific Heights
21 Hayes (1/2 block away) - to Golden Gate Park, Hayes Valley, Downtown
71 Haight - to Ocean Beach, Famous Haight & Ashbury District, Downtown
6 Parnassus - to Lower Haight, Downtown
22 Filmore - to Marina District, Mission District

Want to catch a taxi? Walk out of my building for 1/2 of a block down to the corner of Divisadero and Hayes to the front door of the popular NOPA Restaurant. Cabs arrive and depart every few minutes - I've rarely had to wait!

Have a car? Street parking available around Alamo Square area (no permit required).

Other Things to Note

・Key retrieval will be through directions I send you once you've made a reservation. You'll retrieve the keys from a lock box I have stashed at the building.
・Lower your volume level after 10p. If neighbors complain about your noise level, that will be reflected in your airbnb guest feedback.
・No smoking in the apartment. Go out onto the walk way or to the sidewalk in front of the building. Smoking in the apartment will result in the forfeit your security deposit.
・The Wifi access instructions and password are in the house rules.
・Street parking is always available - even on the weekend evenings when it's challenging.
・Do not park in the 1220 building courtyard - those spots are for monthly parking spot renters only - you'll be towed.

  • Mark was the very first person we ever contacted on Air BnB and he was great! Really friendly and helpful.

We were initially going to stay at his for 8 days but then changed it to just 4 days when we decided to take a detour to LA and the Pacific Coast Highway. Mark was really accommodating and was happy for us to change.

So in the end, Mark's apartment was the 5th place we stayed in during our trip (4 Air BnBs, one hotel) and we were really glad it was the last. Being an actual one bedroom apartment meant there was loads of space and it was really lovely to end our holiday with it.

The Alamo Square area is beautiful and easily reachable by the Muni bus. It was our first time in San Francisco and we loved the city and this place was a great base to explore.

The apartment was great, everything we needed. Ironically, despite all the warnings about making sure we were quiet after 9.30pm, it was actually the neighbours that were really noisy! There were screaming and shouting children late into the night on 3 out of the 4 nights we were there! And there were other loud neighbours that partied etc.

So to conclude, this was great and we would highly recommend it to everyone!

    Response from Mark S.:

As you're from Scotland, you may not have been prepared for the 4th of July weekend celebration surrounding you - sorry that wasn't optimal. I make every effort to ensure a pleasant stay for guests - and for my neighbors in return - which includes laying down rules for quiet hours for guests. Glad you had a great stay, regardless.

  • We had a very comfortable stay at Mark's apartment. I was travelling with my two teenage daughters and no car, and the location was great. It felt very safe, it was easy to reach downtown by bus and there were plenty of local shops and restaurants to meet our needs. Mark was a very responsive host and easy to contact. The apartment was exactly as advertised, clean and secure. Thanks Mark for a great stay!

  • Mark was a great host and I loved staying at his place.

Mark was responsive, friendly, thorough, and considerate. He made sure I had everything I needed and that I could reach him if I needed to (which I didn't, all was smooth as glass).

Mark's place is as you see it and it is in a super location in Hayes Valley which is one of my favorite neighborhoods in SF. You can roll out of bed into Alamo Square Park, on of the nicest and coolest places to hang in the city of a sunny day. There's the Bi-Rite right around the corner for fresh fruit and specialty grocery, and the fabulous new coffee shop, The Mill , on Divisadero between Grove & Folsom.

In other words, great host, all mod cons and the convenient ease of access to SF's best, right around the corner. Enjoy!

  • Mark was a great host. He was very communicative and responded to my questions instantly. His place is exactly as he describes it. The apt. was extremely clean. The location of the place is next to a beautiful park, great cafes and restaurants. I would highly recommend it!

  • The appartment was great. Already before our trip Mark contacted me and explained everything which was needed from finding the appartment to get into it until connecting to the WIFI. When we came in a really tasty bottle of red wine and some fresh foods were waiting for us which was really nice. The appartment is quite big and there's enough space to stow the cloth and the suitcases. Everything was very clean. The small kitchen is cute and well equipped with good knifes and pots and coffee was included to get awake in the morning. The bed was very comfortable. The bath room has a nice window on the top what makes it very friendly and you have sunlight in the morning while getting dressed up. You hear absolutely nothing from the main street which is right by the entrance to the appartment complex. He placed several small papers with explenations about light switches (email hidden) about the neighborhood. You can easily walk to the bus station, bars, grocery store and all you need for living. Only small minus are the neighbors which are very sensitive about noise. In the evening you really need to talk very quiet and better avoid walking through the appartment as the floors are from wood.
I can highly recommend this appartment and the host who was always there for us. Thanks Mark.

  • Mark was always communicative, friendly, and the space had just the right little touches to make it a great stay.

The place was as described - plenty of sunlight can shine through, it was cleaned impeccably, and the building (and area around it,) is safe. Mark made it a bit more special by leaving us some wine and fruit. We kept turning to Mark's description of the neighborhood for cool stuff to visit, and lots of other attractions and areas were easily accessible too.

All in all, it we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

  • Mark's place was even more comfortable than described. We particularly liked its accessibility to USF, where we were able to walk and attend a graduation and not have to worry about parking!
He is an attentive host and answered every query within minutes. We loved the clean and modern atmosphere of the apartment. His gift of fruit and wine was a bonus for which we were appreciative.
We had a family emergency that affected our stay and Mark assisted us in a very thoughtful way. We definitely recommend this apartment for anyone visiting SF!!

  • Mark is very easy to reach and a nice person. Neighborhood could not be better-- seriously close to everything (one block) a tourist or visitor (we're in the second category) might want, including a grocery store (I did a fair amount of cooking while in the apartment).
The stove is really a 'half' stove, older, and will be fine for most people, but not great for cooking full meals if that's what you are looking for. The apt is all white, a good choice, as it is hidden from the street-- in a kind of funky courtyard. Felt safe enough, though. Bed is excellent and large. Bathroom has a skylight, a nice feature. We had a few apartment issues, but mostly minor and Mark came by-- DO text him if you have issues to let him know, say, the coffee's gone or other such things. He's responsive. Would stay again!

  • Mark was truly a great host. He patiently answered every single questions my 2 friends and I had before leaving and gave us lots of helpful tips and information. He always answered very quickly, which is so nice as we already had many other things to worry about. The instructions he left us were very clear and we found the keys without problems.

As for the apartment, it was clean and cozy. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the 3rd person had no problems sleeping on the sofa. The only unfortunate thing was that we didn't realise there was a heater (only the last night) and it was a bit cold in the evening. But we made some hot tea and in the end no one caught a cold. Furthermore, we could always count on hot water for the shower, even when we had to wash our (long) hair! The kitchen was well equipped. We could keep the ice cream we bought at Bi Rite (try the earl grey flavour!) in the freezer, and there was even everything we needed to prepare our picnic. We also had enough space to put all our stuff (lots of hangers in the wardrobe). As for the noise, it wasn't a real issue. It's true we could hear some (very noisy) children playing or neighbors passing by the apartment while we were awake. But when we went to bed, everything was quiet.

The neighborhood is very safe and nice. Upon our arrival, we got a bit lost and a nice couple helped us find it. In the evening, restaurants are still open, so the street is not deserted and we weren't worried comming back "home". The Alamo Square is very beautiful and we could see lots of courageous joggers running early in the morning, squirrels and even hummingbirds! The victorian houses are really beautiful and many other nice places to visit are within reach (Golden Gate Park, Civic Center, Castro...).

In a nutshell, I had a very pleasant stay and I would be glad to come back.

About
Hello, it's me Mark, your San Francisco host. A bit about me - I have curiosity and tenacity in the kitchen. I practice both the art and science of cooking for my friends, never turning down a chance to run a BBQ grill or host dinner at my apartment. During my tenure as a Cajun catering sous-chef, I perfected both my Catfish Po’ Boy and Red Beans and Rice, learned never to make a turducken or fried turkey half-heartedly, and observed that lighting a 3-foot-wide pan of Bananas Foster is best done with a fire extinguisher out of sight right by one’s leg. I enjoy pursuing my passions of riding my motorcycle and photographing interesting and colorful food I've crafted. Separately, of course.
