Large private suite on top floor of Georgian Grade II listed house in Kendal town centre quietly tucked away at the head of an historic cobbled yard. 1 double bedroom plus huge living room (with kitchenette and double sofa bed) and modern bathroom. Use of pretty walled garden. Free parking.

The Space

Although the suite is part of our house, it has its own access so you can come and go as you please. It can comfortably accommodate 4 people with 1 double bedroom, a very large living room (28ft x 21ft - 8.5m x 6.5m) with basic kitchenette and double sofa bed and a modern private bathroom. All rooms have double height ceilings with exposed beams, great views across Kendal's rooftops to the hills beyond and plenty of character.

The living room has ample seating, a comfortable double sofa bed, connected HD TV and DVD player. There is a kitchenette with fridge, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine and Aeroccino milk frother, toaster, crockery and cutlery. The bedroom has a double bed, flat screen TV and digital radio. The bathroom has a large free-standing bath with hand held shower, twin sinks, underfloor heating and glass towel warmer. Towels, bed linen, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, universal travel adaptor and hot water bottles are provided. Wi-fi throughout.

You'll find a large selection of DVDs under the coffee table and an array of local interest books, leaflets and maps which you are welcome to use during your stay.

Help-yourself-breakfast is provided for each day of your stay at no extra cost (bread, butter and preserves, fresh fruit, cereal, milk, local yoghurts, fruit juices, black and herbal teas and a selection of Nespresso coffees). There are ice cubes in the freezer compartment of the fridge.

Please note: there are no cooking or washing up facilities in the suite. Crockery and cutlery is provided for breakfast and/or takeaway food and we do the washing up for you!

Please take a look at our guidebook for details of local restaurants and eateries we recommend.

Guest Access

You are welcome to share our pretty walled garden with decked seating area, table and chairs under a big umbrella for when it's raining, patio heater and fire pit/barbecue.

Interaction with Guests

I run my graphic design business, Dada Design, from home so I'm around if you need anything. When my work load allows, I love to spend time with guests and get to know them better, but I'm also sensitive if guests prefer their privacy. We've found texting is the perfect way to communicate with guests during their stay so a verified mobile number is very useful.

The Neighborhood

There is a superb supermarket 2 minutes walk away that stocks a wide variety of local and specialist produce and has an excellent cheese counter, deli section and off licence. Kendal's bustling high street is one minute's walk away where you'll find plenty of shops, a library, the post office and several banks. There's a Costa on the main high street and Caffe Nero is in the marketplace. It's worth exploring Kendal's historic yards where you'll find many of our more individual retailers and businesses.

The market town of Kendal lies just outside the spectacular Lake District National Park, has plenty of pubs, cafés, takeaways and restaurants, 2 museums, a leisure centre with swimming pool, golf course, the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Brewery Arts Centre with a theatre, cinemas, art galleries, bars and a regular live music programme (visit the breweryarts website). There are plenty of places to explore with lovely parks (Kendal Castle, Serpentine Woods and Noble's Rest) and pleasant walks along the river Kent right on our doorstep. There (email hidden) every Wednesday and Saturday and a farmer's market once a month.

  • My friend and I had a very good 3 nights in the Colour House. Thanks very much Karyn and Merv for a warm welcome and daily breakfast. Comfortable beds and luxurious baths. We travelled by train from London to Oxenholme and then found it very easy getting around on local buses - there were lots of maps available to help plan wonderful walks and wild swims in the lakes. Very enjoyable.

  • We had a really great stay at the Colour House. The living room was spacious and comfortable, well equipped, and very relaxing. We loved the decor, the kitchen had everything we needed, we had an excellent breakfast, and everything in the apartment was beautiful or interesting (usually both). Caryn and Merv were welcoming, we would have loved to stay longer than a one night stopover. We followed Caryn's directions without a hitch so they must be good! Highly recommended.

  • This was probably one of my favourite weekends ever. Colour House is a real treat to stay in, with little visual surprises around every corner. My highlight was the bath :-) The owners are fantastic - extremely helpful and had supplied us with fresh bread, coffee, every tea you can imagine, yogurts, jams, orange juice and much more.

The door is separate from the rest of the house, so you can come and go as you please. We stayed here with two friends of ours, who slept on the sofa bed, which worked really well. It's perfect for four people.

It's only 10 mins drive away from Windermere, too, which is great.

You'll love every second. Thanks again guys!

  • Caryn and Merv were incredibly welcoming and accomodating: we had lovely chats with them and they were always only a text or a phone call away. The suite itself was outstanding with a beautiful (and large!) lounge area, an amazing bath tub and only a couple of seconds away from Kendal's main high street. I have been recommending Colour House to all my friends and would not hesitate to go back.

  • Abfab - this was our first experience with Airbnb & I wonder if it will be bettered. The suite is amazing - renovated to a very high standard & decorated with wonderful character as Caryn is a graphic designer The detailed description & photos on the website are entirely accurate so I won't repeat things apart from do follow directions if you don't know Kendal as the one way system is a nightmare & not having to wash up was a definite plus. Caryn & Merv were perfect hosts - attentive & informative The small garden they have created is beautiful What else can I say other than we would both love to go back

  • Fantastic experience and wonderful hosts. Ideally located in the center of Kendal, with easy access to the nearby road routes into the Lake District. The suite is decorated to an incredible standard, has a nice view of the town and Kendal Castle, and is positioned within the house to allow for either privacy or interaction with the hosts at the guest's discretion.
