Large private suite on top floor of Georgian Grade II listed house in Kendal town centre quietly tucked away at the head of an historic cobbled yard. 1 double bedroom plus huge living room (with kitchenette and double sofa bed) and modern bathroom. Use of pretty walled garden. Free parking.

The Space

We are offering a private suite on the top floor of our house, which has it's own access so you can come and go as you please. It can comfortably accommodate 4 people with 1 double bedroom, a very large living room (28ft x 21ft - 8.5m x 6.5m) with kitchenette and double sofa bed and a modern private bathroom. All rooms have double height ceilings with exposed beams, great views across Kendal's rooftops to the hills beyond and plenty of character.

The living room has ample seating, a comfortable double sofa bed, connected HD TV and DVD player. There is a kitchenette with fridge, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine and Aeroccino milk frother, toaster, crockery and cutlery. The bedroom has a double bed, flat screen TV and digital radio. The bathroom has a large free-standing bath with hand held shower, twin sinks, underfloor heating and glass towel warmer. Towels, bed linen, hair dryer, universal travel adaptor and hot water bottles are provided. Wi-fi throughout.

Help-yourself-breakfast is provided for each day of your stay at no extra cost (bread, butter and preserves, fresh fruit, cereal, milk, local yoghurts, fruit juices, black and herbal teas and a selection of Nespresso coffees). There are ice cubes in the freezer compartment of the fridge.

You'll find a large selection of DVDs under the coffee table and an array of local interest books, leaflets and maps which you are welcome to use during your stay.

Guest Access

You are welcome to share our pretty walled garden with decked seating area, table and chairs under a big umbrella for when it's raining, patio heater and fire pit/barbecue.

Interaction with Guests

I run my graphic design business, Dada Design, from home so I'm around much of the time if you need anything. While I love to chat with guests and get to know them better, I'm also sensitive if guests prefer their privacy. We've found texting is the perfect way to communicate with guests during their stay so a verified mobile number is very useful.

We have a Cocker Spaniel called Pookie who is mad but very friendly. She is only allowed in the suite if you invite her!

The Neighborhood

There is a superb supermarket 2 minutes walk away that stocks a wide variety of local and specialist produce and has an excellent cheese counter, deli section and off licence. Kendal's bustling high street is one minute's walk away where you'll find plenty of shops, a library, the post office and several banks. There's a Costa on the main high street and Caffe Nero is in the marketplace. It's worth exploring Kendal's historic yards where you'll find many of our more individual retailers and businesses.

The market town of Kendal lies just outside the spectacular Lake District National Park, has plenty of pubs, cafés, takeaways and restaurants, 2 museums, a leisure centre with swimming pool, golf course, the Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Brewery Arts Centre with a theatre, cinemas, art galleries, bars and a regular live music programme (visit the breweryarts website). There are plenty of places to explore with lovely parks (Kendal Castle, Serpentine Woods and Noble's Rest) and pleasant walks along the river Kent right on our doorstep. There is a street market every Wednesday and Saturday and a farmer's market once a month.

Check In
  • I could not imagine a more wonderful place to stay in the Lake District. A real home from home, Colour House was the perfect refuge from the (predictable) wet British Weather. Caryn and Marv made us very welcome. Design enthusiasts will appreciate the beautiful attention to detail, those who enjoy their home comforts will feel very spoiled indeed. Particularly loved the heated bathroom flooring and xtreme TV screen. Will definitely be coming back!

  • Just came back from a 4 day getaway in the Lake districts. I don't usually leave reviews but because my stay at the Colour House has been wonderful, I thought I'd share. Caryn and Merv, were great hosts and extremely attentive, giving us lots of privacy and also offering help when needed. The suite is beautiful and cosy and has everything you could possibly want, situated very close to the town centre for easy access to all amenities. Colour House is a great place to relax and also a very convenient place to tour the lakes.

I would highly recommend anyone to stay.

P.S Thank you Caryn and Merv for the afternoon tea, we enjoyed the chat!

  • Our stay at Colour House was just perfect! Everything from the friendly communication prior to our arrival, the warm welcome, the beautiful apartment and helpful recommendations during our stay was first class. You can obviously tell from the photos that the place is going to be nice, but it's the little touches and attention to detail that really make this apartment stand out - luxurious toiletries, top notch breakfast supplies, lots of candles, chilled water in the fridge and even ice cubes. The location is great being very central with lots of nice restaurants and cafes nearby. I warmly recommend Caryn's place and hope to return in the future.

  • The Colour House is a really nice place to stay. It is relatively easy to find, but parking is tricky - thankfully Merv was able to assist. The suite is self contained and has everything you need for a short stay. Caryn and Merv were very friendly and helpful and I would stay there again. Recommended.

Thanks Ruth! Hope your half marathon went well despite the weather. You'd be welcome back anytime, Caryn & Merv.

  • Fantastic place to stay and excellent value for money. The hosts, Caryn and Merv are wonderful people and they helped me out a lot by not only giving me two lifts (to Oxenholme station and also the leisure center!) but also posting a phone charger I'd left behind the next day. Brilliant location, facilities and I found breakfast first class too. The decor as well is modern, quirky and memorable. I think I've run out of superlatives for this place! Stay there if you can...
