  • My wife and I stayed at John's place for about 10 days and LOVED IT! It is very unique with a wonderful view of mountains and ocean. The wallsystem of the home is great as it permitted us to open everything up completely, weather conditions permitting. The home is very clean and cared for and had everything we needed while on Maui.

We decided to get open water scuba certified with Scuba Mike who we recommend to anyone. We were introduced to a new wonderful ocean world and are glad we committed to completing that. We cannot wait to return and stay with John to go to all the beaches and do some more diving!!! Thanks again, John. You are the best.

  • The house was even better then I had imagined. We loved the ability to leave the doors open when we were at the house and overnight, really giving us a full experience listening to all of the animals and breeze through the palm tree. Between the house and being able to surprise my husband with a babymoon our trip was one never to forget!

  • John's place is simply amazing! It is filled with peace and tranquility. It is truly unique--the entire place is made of the finest quality wood. Even the kitchen! It feels like you are in the jungle but you are only 10 minutes from Paia. The views of the ocean are amazing and there is nothing better than sitting on the porch as the afternoon breeze blows by. Laying on the couch on the porch is even better! John is a wonderful host--both courteous and kind. And funny! This is the place to stay if you want an authentic experience in a part of the island that feels a world away from the condos.

  • We had a wonderful stay! The place is absolutely gorgeous. The high ceilings, views, wooden interior and the peaceful surroundings all make for a fantastic experience. The kitchen is well stocked to prepare any kind of meals. The hosts were very kind and generous. They offered us fresh bananas and banana bread which were both delicious. They also let us borrow their snorkel gear. The bed is very comfortable and there is also a cute kitty that hangs around and provides good company. Would love to come back here! This place is about 15 mins drive to Paia where you can go to a bunch of restaurants, shop for groceries and other stuff. If you are planning a trip to hana, you already have a headstart from here. Mile 0 is not far from this place.

  • Some of my favorite memories of our Maui trip was of lounging on John's lanai and gazing into the beautiful views of the ocean and mountains. John is a wonderfully thoughtful and generous host and gave great recommendations on local beaches and restaurants. The house was built and furnished with so much heart and character that it is worth a visit in and of itself. We enjoyed the quiet retreat after a few days of bustle on the south shore.

  • This home is absolutely gorgeous and unique. We can't wait to book our next trip. We felt like we were living in a private tree house. The glass doors open on three sides to allow in the ever-present warm breeze and light. There are no neighbors to block the view. It was incredible.
The view of the ocean and hills is much better than the photos indicate. What a treat to find this place. Our two small children, aged 3 and 5, absolutely loved it. They ran races on the wrap-around-deck and kept themselves totally happy searching for geckos and making up games. The drive to beaches and to Paia is only about 10 minutes, maybe less. There are two big beds - our kids shared one and we were in the other. Both were equipped with drop-down mosquito nets. There were really no mosquitoes to speak of though. John was an excellent host. He was there if we needed him, but otherwise left us on our own. We can't wait to return another time.

  • I miss Maui and the wonderful experience at John's. I fell in love with this property on airbnb and the actual experience even exceeded my expectations. You will be able to see its blue roof peaking through the lush greens from a distance. Once you step in, it takes you to a different world. There is an interesting story behind each piece of furniture. John will tell you all about it. The flat is very spacious with plenty of couches and beds and a fully equipped kitchen. I made expresso every morning and BBQ a few times too. We had most of our meals on the balcony. It would be a shame not to enjoy the amazing view. Miles of green forest with mountain and ocean in the distance. At night time, we left all the sliding doors open to get a cool breeze. John is a very pleasant person and helped us tremendously. He gave us fresh fruits, vegetables, coffee, rice and homemade snacks. He also volunteered to pickup food from the asian grocery store for us. The day before Haleakala, he gave us a big bag of sweaters and blankets which was a life saver. John also let us borrow all of his beach gear. There is a very cute cat Ping. She hangs out in the deck and inside the house and she would greet you every morning. Tips for fighting the mosquitos: John has a spray, mosquito nets and lavender incense which are all helpful. We also bought some coils from local store in Paia; they are very cheap and kept the mosquitos away. Staying at John's made our trip very memorable and it's much cheaper than hotels. I would love to come back again.

  • John's home was absolutely incredible, and he was such a gracious host! We ended up arriving much later than we had anticipated, and John was very kind in helping us find the place and getting us settled. He helped us with our bags and greeted us with fresh bananas, avocados, and banana bread, but wasn't at all intrusive. His hospitality continued throughout our stay and we can't wait to go back.

His home is absolutely breathtaking! The wood work is gorgeous (as you can tell from the pictures). It is spotless, and a great place to stay. The views are amazing, and you can open the the windows all around the apartment to really feel like you are sleeping among the trees. The home is fully-equipped with everything you'd need for the kitchen, plenty of towels for days at the beach, and guidebooks.

We loved the location. It was very serene without being too fair from the nearby hipster spot, Paiea. If you're going to drive the road to Hana or do any of the number of things there is to do on the East side of Maui it is a perfect spot.

I can't rave enough about this place. My husband and I cannot wait to return!

  • We chose John's place as our "home-away-from-home" on our week-long stay in Maui. Like previous reviews, the photos don't do the place justice. We were greeted by John who was very friendly, and later Ping (the cat of the grounds) who was equally friendly. The place is like an open-air cabin, complete with nicely appointed kitchen and ample living space. The combination of the foldable "walls" on the ocean view side and the vaulted ceilings with exposed beams really gives you the "island living" feel. It's located just past the small town of Pa'ia and on a great piece of property, not close to other buildings/people, so it's very private and quiet. We enjoyed fresh fruit every day, including bananas picked on site! John provided us with snorkel gear, and a wealth of knowledge about activities, restaurants, and points of interest on the Road to Hana. The mosquitoes were very friendly, but were kept away at night with the net above the bed.
If you are looking for a truly non-touristy Hawaiian experience, this is the perfect place to call home base. It's in the middle of the island, so nothing is too far away. My wife and I absolutely loved our stay here, and will definitely look John up when we book our next Maui vacation.

  • We had a wonderful stay at John's house! John and his neighbors are lovely people, very friendly and helpful, they brought us fresh fruits, asian style fried rice noodle and super delicious banana bread!
The house is located at a very peaceful neighborhood, with amazing views of mountain and ocean. it is also very convenient to everywhere, you can drive to airport, grocery, restaurants, gelato shop within 30mins. It also has an easy access to the "Heavenly Road to Hana", "Twin Falls" are only 5mins away.
This house is way better than the photos present from the website. It is very charming, cozy, and fully equipped with everything. I am definitely coming back because I owe you some good photos of this house!
