Have a Wonderful and Pleasant Stay!
We absolutely LOVED this place. It has so much character and is just like living in a little fantasy home for a while. John was very nice about letting us leave our luggage there early so we could do some sight seeing before checking in later in the evening. We really hated to leave and can only hope to be able to return some day. We felt completely out of the tourist vibe up there. Very quiet neighborhood yet not far from most of the things people want to visit on Maui.
Beautiful view and property. It was raining heavily when we arrived and our host built a bridge for us to move our luggage across; outstanding! Ping the cat was a friendly face to see everyday. I would definitely stay here again if I return to the area.
John is an incredible host. We didn't feel like we were renting it felt like our own place. The hardest part was having to leave. The view is great, and the house is beautiful. We spent many times sitting on the lanai not wanting to go anywhere else. This place is located to so many wonderful places. We never ran out of things to do. John is happy to suggest places to see. There is not a bedroom but a screen that separates a section from the rest of the house. It felt private and the bed was very comfortable with good sheets. My very favorite place was the swing chair. That is where I had my coffee every morning and that is what I dream of at night. We will be back. Thanks so much John.
Coolest place we've stayed at yet by far. The photos are very accurate but don't quite prepare you for how awesome it is to open up all the sliding doors and just look out with the warm breeze coming in. Great location if you're planning on visiting Paia often or want to drive the road to Hana.
If you are looking to stay off the beaten path, up-country, in a more tropical area, then this is the place to stay! John is a most welcoming, gracious, helpful host (Thu was gone while we were there). He was on hand to welcome us, and show us how everything worked, arrange beds to fit our family configuration, and introduce us to Ping, the cat (if you are allergic to cats you should probably ask about Ping). He lent us jackets when my husband and son wanted to go to the top of Haleakala at midnight, brought me 3 choices of espresso makers when I mentioned that I had been missing my espresso at our previous location, and shared his delicious apple-bananas with us. We could not have asked for a nicer, more accommodating host!
The home is unique and beautiful, as is the view. We could have been happy just sitting on the lanai gazing out all week! I loved having the lit tiki torches on the lanai at night while having dinner at the outdoor table, and we all loved sitting and reading there during the daytime.
The master bed was very comfortable and our son slept well on the futon too. The kitchen was very well equipped, and there was plenty of bedding and towels.
We appreciated the mosquito repellent and candles that were provided. Although it was cold enough at night when we were there that mosquitoes weren't much of a problem, I wouldn't count on that always being the case, so having repellent provided is very helpful! We had a gecko or two hanging around (which we enjoy), as well as various other insects in and out, but remember this is the tropics, so nothing we didn't expect. We had NO problem with food attracting bugs, but I did keep everything that was on the counter in zip-loc baggies, so don't know if that would have been different if I had not done that...
You do have to drive to get anywhere from here, but there are some nice beaches just a short drive away. Also, If you want to visit Hana, but don't want to stay there, then this is a good spot to leave from. Hana Bay is a lovely place to spend an afternoon.
Marisa and her beautiful family were exceptionally kind, respectful, and considerate; they were very quiet and left the place remarkably clean.
For any host, this family will be your ideal choice of guests! I so regret missing the deadline and neglecting to write a review on these wonderful people. I sure hope they will think about returning to us again.
Also danke John !
We loved our stay at John's beautiful Haiku house. It is a gorgeous timber-framed house with a great view of the lush surroundings and ocean. We loved the wrap-around deck and folding doors, which provided great views and a bright spacious atmosphere. The house is in a nice area with lots of privacy with a fun short drive to Makawao and Haiku town.
John was an excellent host. He was very helpful and accommodating. All correspondence was prompt and accurate. He ensured our stay was comfortable and enjoyable.

I particularly enjoy meeting guests and assisting them with recommendations on where to dine and in selecting Island activities. Our staff is also available to accompany guests on their adventures and with outfitting.
