About This Listing
We rent a private room to visitors and students visiting Canada. Shared bath, kitchen, BBQ and laundry. Wireless Internet. We are a Gay couple (not looking for any funny business), one of us is fluent in Spanish, the other only English. We have two Chihuahua's who live in the house with us. We have pictures of the inside and outside of the house. Just minutes (walking) from the heart of the city and minutes (walking) from Lake Ontario. No curfew as we are up to 1:00am most nights.
No bringing strangers home. No smoking marijuana or doing other illegal drugs in the house.
I had a lengthy stay with John & Abraham. They are both great, pleasant hosts, offering advice and information when needed, as well as being respectful and really making you feel at home. The room and amenities are nice, and the house is conviniently located in a nice neighbourhood with easy access to downtown and surrounding areas. Also the dogs are great!
John is a very nice host - always ready to provide information about Toronto (how to get somewhere, possible plans, etc.). He is also very accomodating with timing issues (I had a problem with my flight arriving to Toronto and at some point it looked like I was going to arrive around 3 am - John said he would still be ready to open the door at such a time!). The house is located in a very convenient area, in the eastern part of Downtown Toronto (walkable distance from many interesting areas, and well connected to more distant areas by either streetcar or the Toronto public bicycles (bixi)). The room is fine, the bathroom (shared) is clean and there is access to the kitchen (I used it mostly for breakfast and preparing tea in the morning and at night). Oh - also, John will give you advice on nearby places where to eat (a good Italian/Greek place, and other places for good beer in the (beautiful) historic Distillery District, only a couple of blocks away). All in all, a very good place to have as a base to explore Toronto for a few days. There are two chihuahua dogs (Wall-E and Peanut) very nice both of them if you like dogs (as I do). The presence of pets made the stay even better.
Our stay with John and Abraham was good overall. Their place is located in the southeast end of downtown, which is nice and quiet but still fairly close to the "action". The room is clean and a good size, and they provide us with towels and soap upon arrival. Our major criticism is the fact that they smoke in the house. This wasn't really a "make or break" for me, but I think people should be aware of this because you are exposed to second hand smoke and do end up smelling like cigarettes when you leave.
John's place is in a good and quiet location. They both are really nice and gave us a lot of tips before we headed to Montreal. They have really cute dogs that were a bit frightened in the first days but they loved to be petted anyway. So, Thank you guys for your kindness !
John and Abraham are relaxed, unpretentious hosts, and this was just the right place for my 5 night stay as I was busy at TIFF and needed to come and go early in morning and late in the evening. John's kindness ranged from pointing me to a good fish and chip shop to lending me his raincoat when I had to go out in a downpour to letting me do my laundry in the middle of the night. The house is located on a quiet street convenient for the downtown area.
I was very busy during my stay with John, which meant I was in and out of the house and didn't spend much time there at all. John was very accommodating with this and gave me everything I needed. John is filled with a ton of local knowledge and whenever I needed to know where something was, he had a perfect response. A great stay, and the dogs were very welcoming! Would definitely stay again if I'm in Toronto.
We stayed with John & Abraham for 16 nights in August 2012 when we first moved to Toronto. It was a great cheap alternative to staying in a hotel... We didn't want to stay in a hostel and wanted a private room so worked perfectly from that perspective.
John was very chatty and nice throughout our stay - very knowledgeable about Toronto and gave us lots of good advice!
Abraham was great for a chat and made us a really lovely mexican dinner on our last night which we loved!!
Peamut and Wal-E were so cute - we wanted to bring them with us when we left!!
The house is in a very central location which was very handy - we were able to walk everywhere in the downtown area.
Overall, we would certainly recommend staying with John for a short term place to stay :)
About the Host, John
Lived in Toronto all my life, lived in the same house for 32 years (could have owned 3 with the rent I have paid). Extremely active person, know the city very well. I'll finish this later, my conceited attitude is just not with me at the moment. LOL
This is the perfect place for breakfast, very inexpensive, less than $5.00 for Bacon/Eggs/Toast/Coffee. They also have great lunches, 2 hot meals cooked at the owners mothers house each day.The Esplanade Toronto ON
An amazing place for a long 3.25 mile walk in the country just outside the city on a 10 minute Ferry Boat Ride. A must, beaches, amusement park, rental bikes/boats. Best view of the city.Queens Quay W Toronto ON
