Between 2012 and 2013 Hale Kukui has received lots of positive recognition. The Lonely Planet travel guide said, 'These three tranquil and secluded cottage/units all have wonderful views and pleasing decor, but the perspective of Waipi'o from the detached cottage may make you forget your name.'

Southeby's international real estate magazine cover photo features the view from the property.

HGTV and Aloha Magazine did features on this unique property as well in 2013.

Organic permaculture orchard, 3 cottages and caretaker's house sits back on 750' cliff above Waipio Valley, and looks to the ocean Southeast, North and Northwest up the undeveloped rugged coastline. Sometimes there are a multitude of waterfalls seen cascading down 1000' cliffs into the sea. Gaze at lush greenery, frequent rainbows, especially during the wet season (Winter/Spring). Epic views face 23 miles of these 1000' cliffs, backed up by undeveloped jungle. Whales jumping and breaching can be seen from the property during the winter/spring. Maui is visible on clear days. The area boasts a perfect climate of just enough rain to keep the streams going and the flowers blooming, cool trades off the ocean, and a daytime year-round temperature of between 70 and 85 degrees, with cooler nights.

The property is landscaped with a vast variety of exotic trees, ferns, orchids, palms, flowering shrubs and exotic fruits to pick. We are in the early stages of growing Vanilla, Cocoa, black sapote (Chocolate pudding tree), Macadamia nut trees. Try our fully mature mangoes, avocados, pomelo, Jackfruit, papaya, passion fruit, soursop, breadfruit, rambutan, lychee nuts, starfruit, Brazilian cherries, jaboticaba, cherymoya, mountain apples, true cinnamon, cloves, Miracle berries, a variety of citrus, bananas and much more grown on the property.

Walk out to the point for one of the best views on the island.

Walk along the cliff's edge/ocean path or explore the path through bamboo. Both short easy walks take you to an opening on the picturesque lawn going down to the cliff's edge. Take another short steep path (for sturdy feet only) past the Banyan tree and passion fruit vines into the gulch on our property.

Listen to the peaceful sounds of the Waiulili Stream and our waterfall running through the property and then over a 650' cliff. Waipio Lookout is 1/2 mile away. Black Sand beach can be seen from the property. Ocean and waterfall views abound. Enjoy the peace and privacy of your own suite complete with private outdoor soak tubs.

Explore the quaint town of Honoka'a 10 minutes away with theater, restaurants, several quaint shops featuring locally made goods, outdoor farmers market, gas, groceries and a hospital/clinic.

Other things to note

A $5 fee is included in your rate which makes you a member of the orchard as a visitor for 1 year so your stay complies with our mission to have you enjoy and learn a little about Hawaiian permaculture farming on a small scale. Many of our trees are labelled so you may learn about the fruit, nuts, spices and from which part of the world they come.

Caution!! we don't recommend going near the cliff's edge which may be unstable or walking under coconut trees because the nuts occasionally fall and may be deadly. Only go into the gulch if you are physically fit even though it is a short path. See handout.

The best view I've ever woken up to! I love Waipio! The place was nice. Kitchen is tiny for 2 people preparing a meal, but has everything you need. The orchard was great along with its views! Ate mangoes everyday - yah! Even got fresh coconut and watched it being cut down! Loved the night music! Only little issue is the place gets a bit warm with the afternoon sun, but the view is worth it!

This house is beautiful and the view is unreal. We walked down to the Waipo Valley from the house and relaxed on the gorgeous black sand beach. It was a very comfortable place for our family. It very warm in the house during the day, but it cooled off at night. Filling up the tub on the porch with cool water helped us out. The view from the tub was incredible. Dan greeted us warmly when we arrived. He left fresh fruit for us on the table and when we mentioned our love for lychees, he brought some more over for us. The fresh fruit was all delicious, and I enjoyed walking through the orchard and matching the exotic fruit with its tree. This was our final stay on our vacation, and it was a great place to relax.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom and even though you had to walk outside to use the bathroom from the back room, we saw it as no problem at all. Beatiful view of Waipio Valley and it was really nice to walk around the grounds. In one of the pictures there was a hammock and I saw that it was up towards the main house so wasnt sure if that was off limits or not. House was perfect great serene location. Would definitely stay here again. Andy had coffee, cofee filters, paper towels, trash bags, etc... all of the things you dont have to worry about picking up from the store. Thanks Andy!

Paula was very kind and personable. The property and view are beautiful and the area is quiet and secluded. The night animals in the area are vociferous, so if you're a light sleeper, it could be a problem. The rental was clean and roomy enough, but not super deluxe, which was fine with us. In the end, you are paying for a quiet spot with a view with an attentive property manager. We thought the price was a bit steep, but in the end it was worth it to us.

My family and I stayed here for a small wedding. This place has a gorgeous view. It's very secluded. Host Paula is very helpful. I didn't have a wedding planner. Paula was coordinating with some of my vendors. It made the process much easier for us.

My wife and I had an awesome experience. Dan and Paula are great hosts. The scenery is beautiful here on the orchard. The fresh fruit was amazing. And the morning view from the balcony is just beautiful. Waking up to the view of the Waipio Valley every morning was energizing and awesome! The view literally inspires awe.

I am a physician double board certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. I also trained as an osteopathic physician. My whole life I have had a passion for exotic fruit, gardening in general, orchids and palms. Finally I am lucky enough to help create a permaculture farm in paradise overlooking Waipio's black sand beach. Set back on an ocean cliff you may see waterfalls, rainbows, whales jumping (Jan-March) and incredible 1000 ft. cliffs back up soothing ocean views out to Maui in the Northwest.

See all the way down to the southeast with nothing but vast ocean.
Enjoy fruit and spice picking for free. Relax on this epic property unparalleled anywhere.

My favorite places traveled to include Hale Kukui in Kukuihaele (Waipio and Honoka'a), Zealand, Alaska, Switzerland, Bali and Thailand's island of Cosamui.

I love nature, surfing, swimming, skiing, easy hikes, great food, travel, great conversations, trying or experiencing something new and different. My nine year old daughter means the world to me.

Hale Kukui is a vacation destination and a home, but also a great stepping stone for the whole Big Island. HGTV, Sotheby's International real estate magazine, Lonely planet travel guide, Trip Adviser and Aloha Magazine have all recognized Hale Kukui this year!

Book at the website, Hale or (click the Big Island on the map, then Hamakua coast (light green on the map) to see more and reserve time. Red flower in the window with ocean view is Hale Kukui. Suggested donation $199-$249/night. Stay the seventh night for free! All cottages have WIFi wireless internet and phone is available for local calls. All units have a kitchen or kitchenette in the studio with just about anything you would need to make nice meals and some condiments including salt and pepper, coffee, teas, ceiling fans, towels, linens. Each unit/cottage has a private deck/lanai with a soaking tub with great views to the ocean/cliffs.
