About this listing
Columbia Heights is a great part of DC - and we hope you will enjoy calling it home for a spell. Ours is a comfortable two bedroom apartment in an old brick row house. Enjoy our friendly and hip neighborhood, with easy access to downtown.
We absolutely love living here, and we hope you will too. This is a comfortable well-loved two bedroom apartment in a century-old brick row house. Enjoy friendly and hip Columbia Heights, with easy access to all the sights and museums downtown.
Our home is split into two apartments. Come stay in the airy 2 bedroom apartment on our top floor. We live downstairs. A separate door goes from the entrance up to your space.
We're just above a great nightlife strip - 11th Street NW, with several restaurants and fun bars like The Kangaroo Boxing Club, The Coupe, Room 11, and The Wonderland Ballroom right up the street. It's a short walk to two Green Line Metro stations, grocery stores, and shops. Beautiful Rock Creek Park, U Street, Adams Morgan, and Mount Pleasant are all easily walkable, and there's a nearby bikeshare rack to boot.
The house was built in 1905. It is old-school charming, not necessarily square and plumb. Though it has not been recently renovated, we offer clean, spacious, old-school DC living with colorfully painted floors. There are two bedrooms with full-size beds. Soft pillows, fluffy towels and an alarm clock (we hope you won't need that). The bathroom is small and outdated but clean and functional, and has a claw-foot tub/shower.
You can enjoy the big bright living room, with a home theater projector that makes for a huge image - think movie night. It's hooked up to premium cable TV and AppleTV, and a stereo system. There's space to lay out a yoga mat, or feel free to strum a guitar or mess about on the 1960's drum kit.
For larger groups, the sofa pulls out into a very comfortable queen-sized bed, and for extra-extra room, there's a nice air mattress. There is a surcharge for any adults beyond 4 guests - but no charge for kids 14 and under.
If you like to cook, or want to have friends for dinner, there's a dining room and a galley kitchen with gas stove, microwave, refrigerator. Make smoothies, a souffle, or just toast and coffee. Out back, a rear deck overlooks our small urban homestead. Fresh herbs are right at hand. You might see our friendly cat and dog playing in the yard out back, but they won't get in your space uninvited.
Interaction with Guests
We're around a lot, working in bits and pieces, but always accessible on phone. Feel free to knock or call for tips or to say hello.
Columbia Heights in the last ten years has become one of the hippest areas in DC. There are great restaurants and bars right nearby, plus good supermarkets, coffee shops, farmers markets on weekends. We are two blocks above a great strip of fun cafes and bars, but our block itself is nice and quiet. It's a safe area for walking, but of course be aware of your surroundings and be sensible.
Metros and bike shares are close by, and it's not hard to find a nearby on-street parking spot. We have a guest pass you can use to park for free, but make sure to pay attention to the street sweeping signs, so you don't get a ticket. Biking is a great way to access the city from our neighborhood too.
To make everything work, we need good, clear communication about what you need before and during your stay. We're happy to chat any time on the phone, email, or text.
Check in is after 2PM and check out by 10AM. We are flexible when possible, but if there's someone here the night before you arrive, or coming in the day you're leaving, we need time to get things cleaned up and turned around.
You'll have a key to the apartment. With a separate entrance, you're free to come and go as you wish. Please be sure to lock up.
We will have the flat clean before you arrive, with fresh sheets and towels. We ask that during your stay, you take care of general housekeeping, do your dishes, and make sure not to allow trash and recycling to accumulate too much. Please try to leave the place pretty much as you found it.
We ask you not to smoke tobacco or marijuana in the apartment. Out on the deck, have at it (yes, weed is legal for recreational use in DC).
Try to keep in mind that we live downstairs with our daughter. It's a residence in a friendly neighborhood, not a party house. We don't want to alienate our neighbors, so we ask you to be reasonable with noise, especially at night.
That's pretty much it - enjoy your stay in DC!
Lexie and Graham are really nice and friendly couple. They gave us the passcard for metro, help us find delicious food nearby, and their rooms are really comfortable, unique; Thanks to them,we had a great time in DC!!
Graham and Lexi were gracious hosts and the accommodations were exactly as described. The location was perfect for our family of 5 wanting to do all that DC has to offer. The brief was to the Metro is through a delightful neighborhood with cool restaurants and a Starbucks!
Conveniently located for food & metro-- its a lively and lived-in neighbourhood and home-- comfortable in a way that allows the guests to kick back and relax. The hosts were away but they provided a friend who came over TWICE when we stupidly locked ourselves out...enjoyed running in Rock Creek Park and eating two blocks away at the hip & happening 11th street gourmet ghetto. Good place to cool and calm ourselves after the tourist madness of DC! Kitchen and bathroom are quite cosy but we managed to make it work with the four of us.
We very much enjoyed staying in this apartment. If you are into marble bathrooms and everything should be brand new, this is not the place to be. But it is clean, got everything you need and is conveniently located. The racoon that joined us at the balcony one evening was a nice surprise :-) Thanks Lexie and Graham!
We're a family of four with two 6 y/o boys. This was the perfect location for us. We were looking for something comfortable for 4, kid-friendly, close to the Metro, with easy walking access to dining and shopping, and this fit the bill. We couldn't have been more pleased. Lexie and Graham were available for any needs while we were there, but the place was so well set up that we literally had no needs to speak of. They provided a small bulletin board with Metro info and other useful tips, and there were even toiletries in the bathroom and some staples in the kitchen. At night the neighborhood was quiet and the beds were comfortable. We felt safe with our kids, and even did a little Geocaching in the area.
Our boys told us it was the best vacation ever, and this flat was definitely a part of that. The drum kit was a hit, no pun intended, along with the guitars and other instruments. A wonderful perk for musically-inclined families. And there was even a basket with a few toys in it, which the kids were so happy to find after the long drive.
For anyone traveling in the summer, the AC was excellent, even on days when the heat index was as high as 103. One word of warning: apparently there's a street cleaning ordinance and we ended up with a parking ticket on Tuesday for parking on the wrong side of the street (inexpensive, no big deal). So make sure to ask Lexie and Graham upon arrival whether your car can stay parked where it is!
If your goal is to see the DC sights I recommend downloading the Metro mobile app, wearing some good walking shoes, and renting this flat. You'll have a great stay.
Lexie and Graham were great hosts! The place met our needs and was very comfortable for us. It was a lot bigger than I had imagined from the photos, and the apartment had a fun hippie vibe. The kitchen is a little rustic (e.g. no large bowls, old/small stove), but definitely usable for all meals. We really appreciate their easy communication and flexibility. For example, we arrived in waves, left our bags for a few hours past check-out, and requested more toilet paper mid-stay. Also -- a must in DC -- the AC worked great!
About the Host, Lexie And Graham
We are two public radio producers raising veggies, bees, and a little girl in Washington, DC. Alexis is super crafty and kick ass - originally from Florida. Graham is handy and calm under pressure - hails from New Hampshire. The district is just about in the middle, so seems a good place to make a home. If you stay with us, we'll look to show you the very best of DC's obvious and hidden pleasures.
We do a lot of cooking, enjoy the outdoors, obsess about music and books. Love throwing big parties. Our little daughter Sol keeps us busy, and older daughter Cali amazes. We want to do more travelling, and hope to meet good folk as we explore, and as we host folks here.
