The Space

Private double bedroom in a stylish three bedroom house on Frensham Road in Southsea. Comfortable double bed with feather mattress topper, chest of drawers, shelving unit, chair, iPod dock/radio, record player and television with DVD player.

Bright sunny room available in a stylish Victorian house on a beautiful tree-lined street. Free high-speed WiFi.

The house has been tastefully decorated with a good mix of antique, designer and second hand furniture and decorations. There are lots of great period features throughout the property including high ceilings, original picture rails, coving, ceiling roses, stained glass, fireplaces and wooden floors.

The bedroom is comfortably equipped with a sofa bed which converts into a small double (which can comfortably accommodate two people) with feather mattress topper. The room is at the back of the house so street noise is not an issue and a large window lets in plenty of light.

There are a selection of books and magazines in the room (as well as throughout the rest of the house), a record player (help yourself to records downstairs), iPod dock/alarm clock/radio and TV with a DVD player and ChromeCast device which allows you to stream from your laptop or the iPad provided. The TV is not currently connected to the ariel but can be used for watching DVDs - we have a large selection downstairs in the living room which you are welcome to help yourself to.

Guests have access to a Guest iPad which has a selection of videos already preloaded onto it as well as entertainment apps. There are maps of Portsmouth and lots of local tourism apps and guides on the iPad. Please note that if other rooms are rented the iPad is to be shared between guests.

There is a chest of drawers and shelving unit in the bedroom which are kept empty for you to use for your belongings. If you need to hang items then plead let me know and I can also put in a hanging rail as the built in wardrobe is currently used for owner storage.

The bedroom is located upstairs next to the bathroom which has a deep double-ended bath and overhead shower. There is a second toilet downstairs. There are two other larger bedrooms on this floor which are also available from time to time. Please check out my other listings for more details.

Downstairs there is an entrance hall off of which is the living room which boasts a large fireplace, high ceilings (with original coving and ceiling rose), wooden floors, stained glass windows comfortable seating and a large flatscreen HD television, DVD player, Apple TV and TiVo box with Virgin cable subscription. There are a LOT of books in the house which you're welcome to read during your stay and a good selection of DVDs and board games.

At the end of the hall is everybody's favourite room in the house - the kitchen! It's a large open plan kitchen with exposed brick walls and lots of great period features. It's fully equipped with gas hobs, electric oven, Dualit toaster, Bosch kettle, Smeg fridge, etc. The dining table also converts into a pool table!

The kitchen opens out into the conservatory which is a great reading area with leather club sofa and view out to the garden. Hidden under the countertop in the conservatory is a washing machine, dish washer, microwave and a second freezer. Tea and coffee is available for you to help yourself to throughout your stay and in the morning you can help yourself to the various cereals, toast and spreads available.

The garden is small but functional with a comfortable three seat sofa and small firepit/BBQ on the raised decking area. There is space down the side of the house at the back to safely store your bicycle if you have one.

The house is located on Frensham Road in Southsea which is a beautiful tree-lined street of gorgeous Victorian terraced houses. It is blocked off at one end meaning it's not used as a thoroughfare and therefore there is hardly any traffic. It's conveniently located just 10 minutes from the many shops, bars and restaurants on Albert Road, a 15-20 minute walk to the seafront and has a Co-op, greengrocers, Spar, Lidl, Tesco Express all within 5 minutes walk. Fratton train station is only a 5-10 minute walk from the house and from there you can get direct trains to London in just 90 minutes. There is no permit parking on Frensham and there are always parking spots on the road outside the house.

**Living in the house is Tooticky, a small black cat who likes to keep to herself (but those of you with allergies please be aware). I try to keep the house cleaned to a standard I would hope that most people would be more than happy with but it is a home and if I am very busy prior to your arrival the standard may have slipped slightly. If you would like the property to be cleaned to a higher standard then please give me notice and I can arrange for a professional cleaner and this will incur an additional £20 cleaning charge.**

I hope that's covered most things but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch. Occasionally this room (and the others) are available for longer stays which can be offered at a discounted rate so please contact me to find out.

INCLUDED:
WiFi
Bedding and Linen
Towels
Tea, Coffee, Cereal
Free Parking

OPTIONAL EXTRAS (please advise in advance):
£20 Professional Cleaning
£5 (per person) Cooked Breakfast

Guests are welcome to use all of the communal rooms in the house - the living room, kitchen, conservatory, bathrooms, garden, etc.

Frensham Road is a beautiful tree-lined street in a charming area of Southsea. Close to all the local amenities.
Please look at my guidebook for places to visit during your stay.

There are lots of good bus connections nearby or Fratton train station is just a 5-10 minute walk from the house. From here you can get trains into Portsmouth City Centre (Portsmouth & Southsea Station) or the Historic Dockyards (Portsmouth Harbour Station). Regular trains also leave from here going to Southampton, nearby towns and villages or London (which is just 90 minutes by direct train to Waterloo).
Taxis are relatively inexpensive in Portsmouth and it is normally about £3.50 to travel from the house to most of the bars and restaurants in Central Portsmouth and Southsea.

Guest Access

Guests will have exclusive use of their bedroom. The rest of the house (with the exception of other bedrooms of course) is a shared space which the guests are welcome to use as they wish. We only ask that they respect the fact that it is indeed a 'shared house' (either with ourselves or other guests) and therefore to keep the noise down, share the space and keep the house tidy.

Interaction with Guests

This varies depending on the schedule of myself and my housemate Penny. Sometimes if we are both working away then guests may have the entire house to themselves. On other occasions there may be other guests staying. If guests wish to keep to themselves this does not bother us in the slightest, at the same time, if you wish to watch television with us or chat over a cup of coffee then we are equally happy to do so if we are available.

The Neighborhood

Other Things to Note

As mentioned above, there is a cat living in the house so this is not suitable for those with bad allergies or phobias.
This is one of three rooms in the house which are rented out. Sometimes you will be the only guests, on other occasions it might be that all three rooms are rented and therefore you are sharing the house with other guests. If you want to know in advance then just ask!

  • I had a wonderful stay at Sarah's. It was a lovely quiet location with plenty of parking spaces. My bedroom was clean and comfortable. The house was charming with a lovely conservatory and garden. I was welcomed by Penny, Sarahs house-mate, who made me feel very at-home. I would definitely be more than happy to return.
    Thank you. Rosalind

  • I needed a room for one night so I could visit a relative in Southsea. The house was wonderful, very individualistic and comfortable and in a lovely street of Edwardian houses that I had admired on a previous visit to Southsea. I did not meet Sarah as she was out but her house guest welcomed me and made me feel at home. The room was different to the one in the photo but it had a comfortable double bed, books,DVD and a very modern bathroom as just next door. A help yourself breakfast of cereal, coffee, teas, eggs etc. was available in the morning. A very comfortable and convenient stay.

    Response from Sarah:

Hi Mary, thanks for the lovely review! It was a great reminder that I should put on the listing that the bed is in a different position to how it is in the photographs. It was in fact the same bedroom as the listing that you booked, it just looked a bit different because of that but I'll be sure to update it!
I'm sorry we didn't get the chance to meet however Penny (who lives and co-hosts with me) said what a pleasure it was to meet you. Hope to see you again on future visits!

  • We didn't see Sarah, but we saw Penny. She gave us good tips and help for our stay (Cycle hiring). The house is very stylish in good way. The kitchen is big and very flattery for the eye. There's a guests ipad! I (Beni) fell in love with toothicky (the cat). This shows like you feel at home.

  • My visit to Portsmouth was really short! I only spent a day and a few hours and, during all day, I was so busy taking care of a lot of things... At the end of the day, I came to Sarah's home!
The house is lovely!! After my busy day, I had the chance to have a good night sleep in a cozy bedroom :)
I only had the chance to met Sarah for minutes.. But, she was really nice and I understand all the good coments about her :) I wished I had more time to met Sarah and all the house.
    I truly recomend this house.

  • The house is pretty nice and so is Sarah! She is very helpful and kind. She even let me use her printer to print my boarding pass. If I visit there again, definitely will stay Sarah's place again :)

  • Sarah was very busy when we went so we did not have much opportunity to discuss, but it is a very nice and friendly person.

However, the house is very pleasant.
We appreciated having an iPad available for guests.

The city of Portsmouth is very beautiful under the sun.

We recommend the fish and chips N'Sole Rock on the seaside.

  • I had an excellent time staying at Sarah's house. This was the house where I broke my Air Bnb cherry and it couldn't have been a relaxed and pleasurable experience. Only ten minutes away from Fratton train station, the house is in a very nice leafy area close to the bohemian Southsea shopping area of Albert Street. The house is lovely, very clean, very comfortable and has plenty of useful amenities. Sarah is very friendly, easy to speak with both pre-stay and during my stay and wants you to feel at home. She will also give advice if you want to know anything about Portsmouth and the local area. The house is also situated around 45 minutes away from Gunwharf Quays as well. The house is highly recommended. Thanks again for your kind hospitality, Sarah!

  • I can't emphasise enough how lovely Sarah's house is. I was envious of her urban/raw style, and, especially the beauty that is her kitchen! She was a great host as well - friendly, chatty and generous. My only regret is that I spent such a short time there and didn't even get to say goodbye in the morning, as I left early.

  • Staying at Sarah's House was my first Airbnb experience ever and what can I say: there could Not have eben a greater Start than my Stay at Sarah s House! The House itself is so lovely decorated and arranged. Sarah truly has a great Talent in home decor as well as giving the Place an authentic feel. And Sarah herself and Penny

About
After living in Dorset, Brighton, London, Vancouver and America I've finally settled in my new home in Southsea and rent out the spare bedrooms. Living in the house with me is my roommate Penny who is studying for her PhD in Film Studies at Portsmouth University and my little black cat Tooticky. I travel a lot and enjoy visiting new places and meeting new people. I've done home stays, Airbnb and couch surfed in India, America, Belgium, France and throughout the UK. I've travelled a lot throughout Asia, North America, Europe and a handful of countries in Africa and now I'm keen to spend some time in South and Central America. I have a strong interest in books, music, design, architecture and film. I love cooking and am a vociferous reader of recipe books and food blogs. I enjoy reading and usually have 5-10 different books on the go at any given time. I have a second home in the beautiful town of Staunton in Virginia, USA which I have just started renting out on Airbnb as well. I also have a holiday-rental company in Dorset with 12 cottages and apartments located in and around Sherborne. You can see these on AirBnB by looking up the user 'Sherborne Cottages'
