About This Listing
Tucked behind our house in the Zilker neighborhood in South Austin, this sunny one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage accommodates one or two people perfectly. We've got two great bikes you're welcome to borrow any time.
View from the outside. Despite all the windows, you'll feel very secluded. Fully lighted access from the street.
The space gets wonderful light from its many windows. Stare out into the big trees by day and at night lay in bed and watch the moon go by.
The bed is a queen with great sheets and pillows. We also just finished a complete renovation of the bathroom and shower to add a 40-gallon tank for plenty of hot water.
We're just up the hill from Zilker Park (home of Barton Springs, Austin City Limits, and the beautiful Greenbelt).
Just three blocks east is the heart of South Lamar with tremendous restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and breakfast tacos - not to mention Austin's best snow-cones and the city's one and only honky-tonk dance hall. (See a current list below.)
We've gone to the trouble of being fully licensed as a short-term rental with the city of Austin (License: OL (phone number hidden)) (Looks like AirBnB is suppressing the number because it thinks it's a phone number. If you're a city official, please contact me if you want to verify the license number.) Having a license means you won't be in any danger of having your stay cancelled or interrupted because of a citation. But it also means we have to pay a hefty 15% tax to the city and state. We're keeping the rental rate for the cottage low, but do know that it does include that tax, which other property owners may be choosing not to pay.
Also note that I will only accept reservations now from Airbnb members with at least two positive reviews/references. Thanks.

Steve's cottage is located in the perfect spot to explore Austin. We made good use of Steve's bike to explore the nearby Zilker park area. Of all the areas in Austin we visited, the Zilker park area was our favorite area. Steve was so helpful in recommending restaurants and things to do and had a really positive impact on our trip experience. The cottage itself is perfect size for two people and is very peaceful/relaxing. Definitely excited to visit Austin again and will look to book Steve's cottage before looking elsewhere. Highly recommend staying here!
What a serene, perfect spot! Steve's place is such a gem: In the middle of a neighborhood that's so close to everything, this cottage is one of the most well-designed spaces I've had the privilege to call "home" for a few days. From the little touches like the guest book and the half-n-half in the fridge, to the bigger things that made our stay (privacy... a beautiful big shower... and Steve's wonderful neighborhood recommendations!), we felt so lucky to have stayed here. Steve was a thoughtful, kind host, and although we never ended up running into one another (seems like we both had busy weekends!), he struck the perfect balance of being solicitously available via text, while we enjoyed our private and quiet Walden-in-Austin vacation in this tiny home :) Steve, can't thank you enough -- and the next time we're in town, we can't wait to come back!
WOW! What a fabulous place to stay! Our visit to Austin was enhanced by the accommodations provided by Steve. I'm impressed by the ingenuity and thoughtfulness put into the design of 'The Shed'. Everything you might need is provided - shampoo, soap, towels, ice, coffee, cream, sugar, first aid kit, comfy bed...you get the idea. There was even a camp chair my husband borrowed when he went to the river walk.
The location is primo, close to local restaurants, bars and a Walgreens. It's super easy to get into downtown Austin, taking maybe 10 minutes by car. There is also a bus that takes you into the city.
Steve was a fabulous host! He replied, usually within half an hour, to any questions I had. He's quite knowledgeable about the area and had suggestions on things to do and places to go.
I would definitely recommend you stay with Steve… You won't regret it!
Steve does an excellent job of making you feel welcome! When we arrived, everything was neat and tidy, and he had even put some local beer in the refrigerator for us. Now that's good service :)
This is not our first time to stay at the "Private and Sunny Zilker Cottage" and it most definitely will not be our last!
Steve's Zilker cottage was wonderful and just what we were looking for during our quick weekend stay. Conveniently located to most things we wanted to do in town including Barton Springs. It was simple and lovely and nice to come back to after a day of exploring Austin. Steve was helpful from the beginning to the end of the process. Thanks!
I've never met Steve but I think we could be friends. We arrived at 2 AM after a long day of travel & festival-going. The residence was easy to find and the entrance to the house was well-lit. Inside we found a charming, efficient tiny house with good coffee (Pete's), sugar, 1/2 & 1/2, a couple of lone star beers and a white wine blend in the fridge. It's the little touches that turn a good experience into a fantastic one. Some aspects were a bit rustic (for example, a cement floor & ad hoc pieces of carpet) but make no mistake: all the important components were here: extremely comfortable bed, pillows & soft sheets, awesome shower (Steve was not kidding), coffee, wine & fruit. Although the 'shed' (as it seems to be called by those who love it) is in the backyard, it is very private: in part because of the architecture & design. I loved this space! Efficient, functional & comfortable. And it was out-fitted with everything we needed: earplugs, GOOD shampoo, a beach mat & camp chair & things we didn't need but you might: a cooler, umbrellas, contact info for the nearest urgent care & a fire extinguisher.
We never met Steve but he was very responsive when we couldn't find the combination lock for the bikes. He did check in from time to time (via text, which is how I like to communicate). The neighborhood was quiet, nice & close to many of the places we love in Austin: Barton springs, the riverfront & Zilker Park. I hope we get the chance to stay here again!
About the Host, Steve
I live in Austin with my amazing son, Sam. Never happier than when I'm hanging out with him, seeing friends, or making and seeing theater. Coming up on 20 years in Austin. I love it here and love introducing new people to its charms.
