Tucked behind our house in the Zilker neighborhood in South Austin, this sunny one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage accommodates one or two people perfectly. We've got two great bikes you're welcome to borrow any time.
View from the outside. Despite all the windows, you'll feel very secluded. Fully lighted access from the street.
The space gets wonderful light from its many windows. Stare out into the big trees by day and at night lay in bed and watch the moon go by.
The bed is a queen with great sheets and pillows. We also just finished a complete renovation of the bathroom and shower to add a 40-gallon tank for plenty of hot water.
We're just up the hill from Zilker Park (home of Barton Springs, Austin City Limits, and the beautiful Greenbelt).
Just three blocks east is the heart of South Lamar with tremendous restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and breakfast tacos - not to mention Austin's best snow-cones and the city's one and only honky-tonk dance hall. (See a current list below.)
We've gone to the trouble of being fully licensed as a short-term rental with the city of Austin (License: OL (phone number hidden)) (Looks like AirBnB is suppressing the number because it thinks it's a phone number. If you're a city official, please contact me if you want to verify the license number.) Having a license means you won't be in any danger of having your stay cancelled or interrupted because of a citation. But it also means we have to pay a hefty 15% tax to the city and state. We're keeping the rental rate for the cottage low, but do know that it does include that tax, which other property owners may be choosing not to pay.
Also note that I will only accept reservations now from Airbnb members with at least two positive reviews/references. Thanks.
Happy to answer any other questions you might have.
"Is there a TV?"
"Do you charge for use of the bikes?"
No, you're welcome to borrow them. Just be sure to borrow the locks as well and lock them up securely and legally.
"How far is it from Austin City Limits?"
According to (website hidden) Maps, we're 1.7 miles from Zilker Park. An easy walk down the hill or you can borrow the two bikes.
"Does it have a kitchen?"
It has a microwave, mini-fridge, coffee maker, plates, and silverware but no oven/stove.
"Could we have a third person?"
There's a camping cot if you absolutely need to accommodate a third person, but it's really set up for 2 people.

Steve was great! Very responsive and friendly--but still gave us our privacy while we were in the cottage. The cottage itself was just what we needed: Everything was very functional and clean, there was space for 2 and our stuff, and although it's small, the windows make it bright and airy and easy to hang in. The location was also great for us, because we did a lot of hanging at Barton Springs and in the immediate area--and our house was close to all of it.
Both Steve and the cottage were lovely! We arrived in Austin while Steve was at work, and he provided us with all of the information we needed to get into the cottage ahead of time. The cottage itself looks exactly as described and in the pictures, and was absolutely perfect for our stay. It's the perfect amount of space for two people, and it had anything we would have needed. Steve was incredibly friendly and helpful whenever we needed suggestions, but for the most part we didn't see him much (he was also out of town for a couple of the days during our stay). The neighborhood is so beautiful, and was a great central location for many of the things we wanted to do. We would absolutely stay here again and would recommend to friends as well. Thank you again, Steve!
This was such a fantastic way to experience Austin! Steve has clearly put a lot of thought into making this hideaway warm and welcoming. We got in late on a Friday night, and Steve provided us with all the information to access the key well in advance so we didn't need to disturb (website hidden) and wine were waiting for us, as well as coffee for the coffee pot in the morning. We were within walking distance to South Lamar and classic places like Torchys, and a short Uber ride away from the hubs of South Congress and downtown. But it was great to come back to a quiet neighborhood and relax. We were also able to do a run down to Zilker Park and the river, and Steve was wonderfully kind and friendly even when we met him dripping sweat from running back up the hill to return. :) All in all, I can't recommend this highly enough-- private, convenient, and welcoming!
If you are looking for a cute, convenient place to stay in Austin, this is it. This repurposed shed is now a great space for two who want to be close to Barton Springs, South Lamar and downtown Austin. Bikes were even provided!
FYI - the windows are great to let in the sun, but if you're not an early riser, bring an eye mask.
Steve was an excellent host and his place is lovely. It was clean, comfortable, and stocked with everything I could need or want. I highly recommend staying here to anyone headed to Austin!
Steve and the cottage were AMAZING!
I had a later flight and he was responsive and absolutely fantastic. Took a quick cab from the airport, he met me at the door.
The place itself is fantastic. Quick to downtown, super safe and cute neighborhood. Fridge had great coffee and beer, bed was super comfy and everything was very clean. Totally staying there next year for SXSWedu again!
We had a great time staying in Steve's cottage! We kept commenting on what a clever design the space had. Little lights, just where you would need them, sliding doors to conserve space, and and a well-planned layout made it a very smart little space for us to stay in. He knew exactly what we would need. He even had a humidifier set up for us (which we actually used). His home and cottage are located in a great area of Austin! It was so close to all the things in downtown that we needed to get to. We had a great experience staying there!
I live in Austin with my amazing son, Sam. Never happier than when I'm hanging out with him, seeing friends, or making and seeing theater. Coming up on 20 years in Austin. I love it here and love introducing new people to its charms.
