The Space

Stylish house in Portobello, Dublin 8, by the canal - a dream location for visitors as it is so full of character - probably the most desirable, safe and interesting place to stay in the entire city. Price Euro 95 per night. Ideal for a couple visiting Dublin. There is the option of having a third guest sleep on my inflatable single bed at the same price if you wish.

I like to know a bit about my guests before any bookings are confirmed so please be willing to swap a couple of messages.

This lovely, welcoming home is a few minutes walk from Stephen's Green right in the heart of the city - ideal for walking to all the sights, galleries, museums, theatres, cinemas - not to mention bars and restaurants - that Dublin has to offer. The best way to really get to know Dublin is on foot which is why this location is so attractive to visitors. Close to numerous buses, Luas and train stations and of course the Airport bus route - the number 16 leaves you at the end of my street. You would have the use of all kitchen utensils, books, towels and so on. Please be mindful of the fact that this is a functioning home - not a 5 star hotel. Guests have the use of a your clothes on a stand-alone clothes rail and a chest of drawers, wardrobes would still contain some of our own. We are passionate about Dublin and about travel in general - as well as arts and culture - and will give you ideas on what to see and do if you want. The house is cleaned to a high standard on your arrival and we ask that you leave it in good shape when you leave. When you tire of all the partying that the city has to offer you may just want to make yourself some supper and snuggle up in front of the fire - which is exactly what this house is designed for. And in the morning, the famous Bretzel bakery is literally on your doorstep for early morning bagels and muffins. Or, treat yourself to an amazing breakfast in The Lennox Bistro which is at the end of the street. The Camden Kitchen and Locks are the closest up-market neighbourhood restaurants - whilst Green 19 does dinner for a tenner - great value. The Bernard Shaw is down the road for hipsters - and Cassidy's is the place to go if you simply want the best pint of Guinness in town - again around the corner from this house. The Jewish Museum, George Bernard Shaw's birthplace, The Iveagh Gardens and a whole host of other cultural sights are minutes away as are good supermarkets, off-licences and delis. You can easily walk into town to see Temple Bar, The Irish Film Institute, The Book of Kells, the National Gallery and Museum - and much more. The St Patrick's Day Parade ends close-by to the house.

Upstairs - Bedroom one has a double bed with a mattress on a wooden bed base. Bedroom two is currently used as a home office and you are welcome to use it as a place to write or reflect on your stay in Dublin. It looks out over a small roof garden which you can walk out onto for some fresh air. (Some guests put the single inflatable mattress in their for a third person).

Downstairs - Bright and tastefully furnished living room. Inflatable single bed and sleeping bag for extra guest. Separate modern kitchen with dining area. Gas hob, electric cooker, fridge, freezer, washing machine/ dryer and water filter tap for drinking water. Bathroom with bath and electric shower for immediate hot water.

Central heating, super fast wi-fi broadband internet, TV and DVD and all other mod cons.

All utility costs are included in the Euro 95 per night fee. No smoking in the house please.

Security deposit is required via Air B&B prior to arrival. Your deposit will be returned to you on your day of departure if everything is in order after the property has been inspected.

  • Hilary is a lovely host with a nice place and provided lots of advice on the area and easy to communicate with. The house is clean and secure in a good area not far from the Grand Canal which is nice to walk along. Located very close to Dublin CBD (Downtown) about 15 minutes walking. There are restaurants and pubs nearby with plenty of choices. The house is a home with lots of books and nick knacks making it a restful place. Good heating and fireplace to take the chill off the Dublin air.
Would stay again and thank you Hilary for a good Dublin stay.

  • I had the pleasure of renting Hilary's house for one month in November. This was a very nice place to stay in Dublin. The house itself is quite cozy and everything functioned very well. All appliances as well as wifi worked exceptionally well, the bed was very comfy and plenty of hot water in the shower. There is also a functioning fireplace to keep warm on those cold nights. The neighborhood is exceptional, as there are tons of restaurants, shops, cafes, etc....within 2-5 minute walk of the house. Walking into the Temple Bar area only takes about 15 minutes and you pass by lots of cool places on the way. There was also a good gym just 2 blocks away. The booking process was quite easy and Hilary was a pleasure to deal with, and we spent some time together exploring Dublin and a good sushi place together. I would not hesitate a second to recommend renting her house to anyone coming to Dublin. Hilary is one of the most gracious hosts I have had the pleasure to work with, and am thankful that I was able to connect with such a good person. Thanks for everything, Hilary! I look forward to staying in touch.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Hilary's place. She was kind enough to offer her air mattress and pump so that my friend and I could have separate sleeping areas. Everything was clean (especially the bathroom, which is very important). The kitchen was fully stocked, but we really didn't need it because the restaurant around the corner was so fantastic! The walk to the city center was not a big deal and we always felt safe in the neighborhood. Hilary is very friendly and accommodating.

  • My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay at Hilary's place. It's situated in a quiet neighbourhood (with trees and a river nearby) and still in walking distance to the centre of Dublin. That suited us very well. The place itself has everything you need and is furnished and decorated in a very private way which makes you feel most welcome. It's just like a home away from home. I can certainly recommend Hilary's Charming Dublinhouse.

Best regards - also to Hilary's sweet mother who so kindly welcomed us and let us in when we arrived late in the evening, thank you.

  • Our stay at Hilary's home was excellent. Her flat is in a great location close to the canal in a quiet residential street (just around the corner from George Bernard Shaw's old home). There are some top cafes, bars & restaurants close by and the centre of town is only a 15/20 minute walk away. The flat itself makes for great accommodation with all the necessary home comforts available and it made for a nice change of pace sometimes to have a quiet evening in making dinner for ourselves in the kitchen and relaxing in the living room with a DVD or book. Hilary was extremely helpful and always prompt in her response to any queries we had, even going so far as to provide us with recommendations of other places to visit for the rest of our subsequent trip around Ireland. Thanks Hilary!

  • Exactly what one imagines! A home.
Hilary's house was a fantastic place to stay in Dublin. Immaculately clean, great books, a respite. Lovely bedroom on very very quiet street, on the fringes of a slightly run -down and very real neighborhood, local pub, cafes and restaurants. Lots of nooks and cranny for work spaces or just getting away. A fifteen minute walk from St. Stephen's Green (though perhaps not recommended for a woman alone after midnight). Communication with Hilary was incredibly good - she responded quickly, clearly, with very detailed instructions. A pleasure to stay in your house - thank you!

  • Hilary's home is a lovely place to base yourself in Dublin. It is in a great calm location within walking distance of everywhere in central Dublin that we wanted to get to.
The house is very comfortable and Hilary did everything to help us have good stay.

  • We stayed at HIlary's place for a few days in May 2013. Had a wonderful time! The apartment is in a great location - very close to the city center as well as Ranelagh section of Dublin which is filled with excellent restaurants offering much better value for your money than many of the touristy places on Grafton street. Hilary recommended several great spots in her neighborhood and they were some of the best we ate at in Dublin (we thought the food was generally amazing so that's saying something).
The apartment was left to us in impeccable condition. Clean and organized. Hilary herself was very friendly and welcoming. She was literally cleaning up to the last minute before our arrival. She is also a wonderful host, that thought about every single detail to make our stay more pleasant. We got a hand out that included where everything is in the apartment as well as plenty of tips for sightseeing Dublin. She even left us a cupboard full of dried food and a wonderful gourmet tea from a local tea shop!
We couldn't bee happier with our choice!
    Thank you again Hilary!

  • Hilary's flat is, true to her description, charming. It was a perfect size, and had everything I needed to get by during my trip. I especially appreciated having a great, easy-to-use washer/dryer!

The neighborhood is fun, and coming-up, with tons of interesting shops and pubs. The locals are super-friendly, too. You'll find it easy to make new friends!

  • The only thing that hilary's house is lacking is a lengthy glowing review on this website. The house is indeed cool and has every conceivable appliance and a well stocked kitchen (i.e everything you could possibly need bar leaves to whip up a nice salad). An awful thing to read that a previous guest maintained that they felt that the house is cluttered. Far
from it ! The house is quite Clearly a home and i am delighted to have had the opportunity to stay in a Home of such high calibre.

Now I'm a dubliner and though from a relatively humble background myself I have been privileged to have mixed in the highest echelons of dublin society. Thats not me bragging, just trying to get the message across that im in a good position to pass judgement having seen the interiors of hundreds of properties in this fair city, some of which have been owned by Dublin's finest.

The area in which the apartment is located is extremely quiet so much so that you might be forgiven for thinking that you are in the countryside. Yet the city center is a mere ten minutes walk away. In short a perfectly located house in very tranquil surroundings.

Hilary greeted us on our arrival and made sure that we knew how everything worked and we had her contact should we have had any problems or needed anything. She is a great ambassador for the hospitable reputation of the Irish and hats off to her for making us feel at ease during our stay. So to sum up a wonderful place and an equally wonderful host. Thank you so much for having us Hilary and a 5 out of 5 on every count.

p.s Forgot to mention an extremely comfortable Bed.
