Other Things to Note
Montecarlo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Lucca in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 50 km west of Florence and about 12 km east of Lucca.
Montecarlo was founded in 1333 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. A true settlement, however, appeared only after the Florentine destroyed the nearby burgh of Vivinaia, and the authorities of the Republic of Lucca moved the population to the hill where Charles' castle was. Montecarlo was a possession of the Republic of Florence from 1437.
Lucca is a city in Tuscany, northern central Italy, situated on the river Serchio in a fertile plain. It is the capital city of the Province of Lucca. Among other reasons, it is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls.
Lucca's tradition has been one of sturdy independence rather than flamboyance, which means that the information boards you come across outside its more notable buildings are still usually in Italian only. In fact, the town boasts no famous showpieces, and therefore no crowds of tourists or rows of souvenir shops.
Lucca is roughly oval, flat and hardly a mile across. Within this span there are no wide roads to cross, but a multitude of old churches, little piazzas, towers and family businesses. Behind many an arching doorway there is a glimpse of vaulted passage or columned yard, usually private. This is a town where you can dispense with a map and simply walk or, like the locals, cycle: pretty soon you are bound to come back to somewhere you recognise or to the city rampart, which offers a high and grassy promenade (generally only resembling a wall when seen from outside).
It's possible to climb one or other of the two highest bell-towers to look out on the mazy rooftops of the town and the surrounding Tuscan hills. A small circular piazza with entrances at the four points of the compass stands on the site of the town is Roman amphitheatre. The beautiful church of San Frediano, founded by an Irish saint, keeps the intact body of a later saint on show for the faithful, as well as a vast 12th-century font with figures carved with such force as to seem more Viking than Romanesque. For contrast, find the statue of Lucca's favourite son, Puccini, relaxing with a cigarette.
Lucca's other tourist attractions include the Duomo of San Martino, along side its own museum, both of which contain fine work by Jacopo della Quercia. Located over the old Roman forum, and named for it, is another grand church: San Michele in Foro. Art-lovers will want to explore the Pinacoteca Nazionale, the town's art gallery and the Museo Guinigi, which contains sculpture as well as paintings.

Elisa and her father were wonderful hosts. Very pleasant, very helpful. They got some products for us to be able to have breakfast first morning, booked tables at the restaurants, helped to print boarding passes, etc. They organized pizza party at villa terrace for us. Pizzas were so tasty....
The villa is spacious, nicely decorated with the large pool outside. Our kids loved the pool, it can be lighted and used late in the evening after long day of sightseeing. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need. The rooms are bright and cosy with lots of books and antiques.
The villa stands outside the village so you have to have a car to move around.
Highly highly recommended:)
Very, very nice. All we had dreamed about. Warm velcom, realy good service, nice and big house, great view, lovly big pool with a big garden for fotball and voleyball. The area was realy Toscany with a great view to the mountain, specialy in sunset, vinyeards, nice walks. Lovly
We had an absolute flawless experience at Meriggio Barn! Traveling as a family of 8 (all adults) in early May, we were were looking for a cost-efficient, well-located, 4-bedroom house for a short stay (3 nights), and we couldn't have been luckier in stumbling across Meriggio Barn.
The house is a beautifully renovated barn where Elisa grew up (she now has her own family and her delightful parents live nearby). All three were the ultimate hosts - upon arrival, we received a sizable welcome basket with lots of food and preparations to make breakfast. They were available for all of our needs, from showing us how to use the outdoor stone oven to fixing the heat upon request to arranging a private dinner with a local chef at the house. They were even happy to let us check in very late (after midnight!) when we were running very late from our previous destination.
The house itself is much larger than the pictures would make it seem. Plenty of space and seating for 8 people in all common areas. Italian countryside decor that feels homey and cozy, perfect for our family getaway. Several large dining tables, a large patio with gorgeous views over the Tuscan hills and a sizable pool. Unfortunately, it was still too cool in early spring to take full advantage of the pool, but it would be perfect in summer, with loungers and a covered table for poolside snacking. There are four bedrooms, two large with bathrooms ensuite. The other two bedrooms are much smaller but share a large bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. My partner and I slept in the room with two beds and each was large enough to sleep both of us (probably "full size" by American standards). Not a problem in the slightest, would actually be perfect for sleeping kids. There is a washing machine, as well.
Elisa also set up a private dining experience that again exceeded all expectations - Elisa's parents oversaw the whole thing. We wanted to celebrate my mother's and sister-in-law's birthdays, and it was a very special evening. The several-course meal was reasonably priced and delicious, and the chef gave a pasta-making demonstration. They even decorated the table with rose petals!
Location-wise, the house was an excellent base for exploring Lucca and surrounding areas. Lucca and Pisa are 10-20 minute drive, Cinque Terre is about an hour's drive. You do need a car to get around the area, the house is up in the hills and the nearest supermarket was probably a 5-10 minute drive.
Overall, we had a fabulous stay at Meriggio Barn. It was by far the most reasonably-priced option I saw in my research, and the experience was incredible. I can't stress enough my appreciation to Elisa and her family for providing a house-rental option for less than a week (rare in Tuscany) and for hosting us. Honestly, I would go back again just to visit with them! Highly recommend this place, you won't regret it.
Elisa and her parents were *fantastic* to deal with--they did everything from accomodating our very late arrival to bringing back a sweater to me that I had left behind. They were very nice and helpful.
The house is gorgeous, and the rooms are all spacious and wonderful. The grounds are lovely, and we had a wonderful, Tuscan dinner from grilling on the BBQ and cooking in the kitchen. This place is fantastic, and I'd highly recommend it and the wonderful hosts.
Meriggio Barn was everything we had hoped for. The surrounding countryside, the views, the beautiful garden, the large pool, the barbecue dinners... What more could you ask for? Adolfo and Carolina welcomed us and made us feel like visiting family; they were warm and helpful and so very lovable.
The house was much bigger than we had expected, with sufficient room for at least nine people to stay comfortably. We never used the air-conditioning, but it was good to know it was there. The kitchen and bathrooms were modern and high quality. The supermarket, which was only a couple of minute's drive away, stocked amazing goodies one would want and expect in the Tuscan countryside.
Did I mention the views? The paths around the property were wonderful for walks or running, with breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and vines, trees placed 'just so'. We enjoyed both sunrises and sunsets.
I only wish we could have stayed longer!!
