Other Things to Note
Check in is after 4:30 pm and check out is at noon, unless by prior arrangement. Two night minimum for spring and summer weekends.
Pets: Pets are considered on a case by case basis, depending on the type, size, and age of the animal. Please provide details when requesting your reservation. A cleaning fee will be deducted from the security deposit if pet-related issues warrant.
No Smoking: Smoking is prohibited in the house and on the decks. If you choose to smoke in the other outdoor areas, please do not leave cigarette butts or associated litter and be cautious of all the leaves and wood that surround. Thanks for your cooperation on this front!
Grilling: There is a small “Smoky Joe” and a larger old grill/smoker at the lower driveway. Please be careful when using these, and make sure any fires (grill or in the metal ”fire pit”) are completely out before leaving them unattended. There is charcoal in one of the bins under the table.
Condiments: There is coffee in the freezer for your use, tea in a box, and miscellaneous condiments for general use. There is ice in the freezer. Anything that we prefer not to share has been stored in the top shelf of the freezer, and in the drawers and door of the refrigerator.
Kitchen Use: We welcome your use of the kitchen, but request your cooperation in returning it to the condition that you have found it so that we can minimize cleaning to avoid charging cleaning fees. Dishes and glasses are in cabinets above the sink. Dishwasher detergent is under the sink, as are windex and various other cleaning agents.
Septic System: Please do not flush anything beyond human waste and toilet paper.
Nature: It’s unlikely that you selected to stay with us unless you are a fan of the outdoors. As mentioned, remember that bugs love lights- they will try to come into the house. While it is unlikely that you will encounter a bear, bears love trash and food and leaving these things outdoors will exponentially increase your chance of meeting one- as well as nearly ensuring visits by raccoons, squirrels, deer, etc. On the positive nature side, sitting quietly on the upper deck will likely result in your being buzzed by several hummingbirds, your witnessing many birds of prey circling the valley, and observing a very friendly doe and her babies. These deer like to come up the mountain in the evening and graze in the area between the house and the shed.
Trash: Please consolidate your trash in the kitchen can and leave it there or pack it out when you leave. Please do not put trash with food scraps in the outdoor bins unless you are familiar with composting and want to compost relevant food items in the bin near the trash box.
Well, what can I say. This place is beautiful. My two girlfriends and I spent the weekend here and despite all the rain, it was wonderful. We were able to relax, reading on the porch, cooking dinner, and binge watching Netflix. The house is wonderful and you can tell the owners want to make visitors happy. I can't wait to come back again!
All went according to expectations. This was my second experience using AirBNB. I was looking for something as close to nature as possible in the VA mountains, browsed AirBNB and found what I was looking for in the Mountain Octagon house. It was available, so I left a note to Jill to book. Voila! Done.
Via e-mail and on the phone, Jill was accommodating and answered all my questions about the property, and even e-mailed me a detailed description on what to expect.
Upon arrival, Sarah Beth, I assume Jill's assistant, was there to greet us. She was very pleasant as well and answered even more questions. Once we got a tour of the house and some exit instructions, Sarah Beth left. We were on our own for the next three days-- and really enjoyed it!
The house is mostly made up of floor-to-ceiling windows. And for a relatively small domain, was very spacious. The crowning glory for us was the deck with its awesome view of the surrounding valley and mountains in the distance. Also, there was plenty of birding activity thanks to the suet and hummingbird feeders hanging off the deck. While there we saw pileated, downey, and red-bellied woodpeckers, nuthatches buzzards, hawks, and even a scarlet tanager.
The location of the Octagon House is very private. We only had several drive-bys all the time we were there, and most of them were the local landscaper working on a neighboring property. You can't see any of the neighbors because of the trees and the well-spaced layout of the lots. And there truly aren't many neighbors up there anyway!
The amenities were exactly as described. A great kitchen to work with. And the fridge and cabinets were stocked with all the utensils one would need as well as basic foodstuffs, water, coffee, spices, etc. The bed and bedroom were very comfortable. There was a washer and dryer for our use too. And-- of course, we simply LOVED the windows everywhere throughout the house.
If you're nature buffs (and especially rural folks) like us, you will enjoy the peace and solitude of the Mountain Octagon house. The view and local flora and fauna will impress you. I highly recommend this home for a getaway.
P.S. Staunton VA is only 30 minutes away and is quite the swingin' little city! Lots to see, do, and great restaurants to eat at. We enjoyed AVA Wine Bar & Restuarant, Yelping Dog Wine Bar, and the Zynodoa restaurant while there.
Great place to stay with amenities you wouldn't expect in a mountain cabin. Everything was as described or exceeded my expectations. You really can't go wrong with renting this cabin.
Jill's house is a wonderful place for a woodland retreat. Every day my boyfriend and I watched the gorgeous woodpeckers take turns on the patio bird feeder. The views are spectacular with gorgeous vistas over the trees looking at the mountains in the distance. The house is well appointed and thoughtfully decorated and comfortable. It was extremely clean and she even stocked it with plenty of breakfast treats. It's also a half hour drive from the charming town of Staunton, VA, and very near by hiking and fishing.
The most beautiful place I've ever been. Period.
