Interaction with Guests
This is your escape- we will greet you and be available if you need anything, but guests have privacy.
Other Things to Note
Check in is after 4:30 pm and check out is at noon, unless by prior arrangement. Two night minimum for spring and summer weekends.
Pets: Pets are considered on a case by case basis, depending on the type, size, and age of the animal. Please provide details when requesting your reservation. A cleaning fee will be deducted from the security deposit if pet-related issues warrant.
No Smoking: Smoking is prohibited in the house and on the decks. If you choose to smoke in the other outdoor areas, please do not leave cigarette butts or associated litter and be cautious of all the leaves and wood that surround. Thanks for your cooperation on this front!
Grilling: There is a small “Smoky Joe” and a larger old grill/smoker at the lower driveway. Please be careful when using these, and make sure any fires (grill or in the metal ”fire pit”) are completely out before leaving them unattended. There is charcoal in one of the bins under the table.
Condiments: There is coffee in the freezer for your use, tea in a box, and miscellaneous condiments for general use. There is ice in the freezer. Anything that we prefer not to share has been stored in the top shelf of the freezer, and in the drawers and door of the refrigerator.
Kitchen Use: We welcome your use of the kitchen, but request your cooperation in returning it to the condition that you have found it so that we can minimize cleaning to avoid charging cleaning fees. Dishes and glasses are in cabinets above the sink. Dishwasher detergent is under the sink, as are windex and various other cleaning agents.
Septic System: Please do not flush anything beyond human waste and toilet paper.
Nature: It’s unlikely that you selected to stay with us unless you are a fan of the outdoors. As mentioned, remember that bugs love lights- they will try to come into the house. While it is unlikely that you will encounter a bear, bears love trash and food and leaving these things outdoors will exponentially increase your chance of meeting one- as well as nearly ensuring visits by raccoons, squirrels, deer, etc. On the positive nature side, sitting quietly on the upper deck will likely result in your being buzzed by several hummingbirds, your witnessing many birds of prey circling the valley, and observing a very friendly doe and her babies. These deer like to come up the mountain in the evening and graze in the area between the house and the shed.
Trash: Please consolidate your trash in the kitchen can and leave it there or pack it out when you leave. Please do not put trash with food scraps in the outdoor bins unless you are familiar with composting and want to compost relevant food items in the bin near the trash box.
Had a weekend getaway Feb. 20,2015. Boy what a get away!!! We had a really nice time and the place was exactly as described. Neat and clean with a lot of amenities for your comfort. We received 18 inches of snow while at the house. A bit scared about getting down the mountain to be honest BUT the neighbors quickly put our concerns at rest. They together kept the steep mountain road passable. We also had 4 wheel drive thankfully. The snow amount was unexpected but the scenery was beautiful. Jill called and offered a discount if we wanted to leave and gave us options which was very nice.. All in All a very nice place to stay.
The Octagon is the perfect getaway spot. It is unique in design and offers great views and seclusion. Perfect for a valentines day retreat with my wife. Sarah Beth and Jill were extremely gracious and had everything ready for us when we arrived. The house was clean, fully stocked with anything you would need, and comfortable. Even on the coldest days of the year it was extremely warm and cozy. I would recommend this to any couple interested in spending quality time together.
My boyfriend and I spent three nights at the Mountain Octagon and had an awesome time. We were greeted by Sara Beth, who showed us around the house and made sure we were comfortable. The house was just as described on airbnb and even exceeded our expectations. Architecturally, the home is really creatively and intelligently designed. We loved drinking mimosas in the morning and watching the birds eat from the feeder. We saw tufted titmouses, chickadees, snow birds, and three types of woodpeckers - even a pileated woodpecker that was 18 inches tall! The windows all around the home made us feel like we were in a tree house. The location was great - we felt the privacy of being in the woods, yet we were only about 30 minutes from Staunton. We hiked the Chimney Hollow Trail off of 250, checked out Braley Pond, and visited the Natural Chimneys. Numerous maps and guidebooks are available for you to decide what to explore within the area. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely book again!
We got back from our weekend escape yesterday, and have only wonderful things to say about our stay. The place was just as listed but more beautiful in person. We brought our Blue Apron meals with us to cook there, and they had everything we needed in the kitchen to whip up some delicious meals. Most of the time was spent being cozy in the secluded home. We had our 16 month old with us and he loved running around the place and exploring. We needed to move a few things out of his way, but not much. Sarah Beth welcomed us and showed us around the place and that's all we need to settled in. Loved our weekend, and hope to be back soon.

Just returned from the Mountain Octagon cabin yesterday and missing it already. It is truly a gem in every aspect.
Location: The cabin is located on the side of a small mountain and easy-to-find. Directions were great - you are far from anything but a small grocer, so stock up beforehand. The drive up the mountain would be tricky in icy conditions, but I felt perfectly safe driving it - even at night.
Cabin: Even in the middle of nature, I'm a bit of a clean freak. The cabin was immaculate. It felt brand new because everything was in such great condition. We did have about a dozen flies each day that managed to get in somehow, but they didn't bother us. The views were my favorite part - floor to ceiling windows gave it a treehouse feel - and I loved watching the birds each morning at the birdfeeder. The double bed was super comfortable (Tempur-Pedic) and, like everyone else said, having such a stocked kitchen was a luxury as well as Netflix and Pandora.
Check-in/Check-out: Loved having someone there to greet us and show us around. She was right on time us and was a great host, ready to answer any questions we had.
Things-to-do: Staunton is about 20-25 minutes away, which is worth a trip if you like small, mountain towns. There is a stocked pond for fishing and hiking trails about 4 miles from the house (Bradley's Pond). We also visited Lexington, Natural Bridge and the Natural Chimneys.
Overall, it was a great experience and I have already recommended the cabin to several friends. If you are considering, I would not hesitate to book and I hope that I'll be back some day!
My boyfriend and I had an amazing time staying at the Mountain Octagon. It was the perfect weekend get-away. The beautifully well thought out design of the Mountain Octagon produces a living space even more spacious than the pictures could ever capture. The floor to ceiling windows allowed for fantastic natural lighting and picturesque views while achieving privacy. Like the space itself, the sofa was cozy yet spacious. The bed was also super comfortable - perfectly firm and soft at the same time. The kitchen was well organized and stocked. Though we brought our own tea, we ended up having some of Jill's great selection. Pure relaxation and bringing the outdoors in - that's what this place did for us. Thanks Jill for a fantastic stay!
