About This Listing
An adventurer's paradise. This cute and funky bungalow is located just moments from the beautiful Sunset Beach, famous for attracting the kiting community. There are hiking trails just before you reach Sunset Beach that lead to many of the area's natural and historical attractions. You can also fish, kayak or canoe at Sunset, Cullaby or Coffinberry Lakes which are all easily reached from the cottage.
The house is located directly between Seaside and Astoria. It is a great location for exploring both coastal communities. Astoria is historic with beautiful Victorians and a thriving new brew pub industry. Seaside is perfect for the kids with bumper cars, arcades, outlet malls shopping and an aquarium where you can feed the seals.
The house is small, yet functional. The bedroom nook houses a queen bed. It is divided from the living area by curtains. The bed is very comfortable. It is a great place to sleep in since it stays nice and dark and there is virtually no noise in the neighborhood (most days).
The second sleeping area holds a bunk bed with a double futon and a single bed above. This is usable as a "living room" if a couple stays or as another "bedroom" for other adults or kids.
In the front room here is a funky 1960's sofa near the woodstove that also folds into a bed suitable for one. The cottage can sleep up to 6 people. SInce it is small and there is only 1 bathroom, it is best for a couple or a family.
The kitchen has a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, griddle and a hotplate. There is plenty of pantry space and the home comes equipped with dishes and flatware for 6. There is a dining nook that seats 4 comfortably
The wood burning stove will be your main source of heat. Please make sure you know how to build a fire or be willing to learn. And please always be safe! If it is very cold, or if you are wary of the fire, there are two small electric heaters.
Just off the front steps is an outdoor covered area for BBQs, cuddling up and reading a good book, or an evening cocktail. There is also room to hang stuff out to dry after those long days on the beach! The yard is quite large and holds two trees perfect for setting up a slackline or clothes line if you prefer. There is also a lovely fire pit with benches for your enjoyment.
* Have fun and be safe!
* Don't burn the place down, only use small pieces of wood and newspaper in the wood stove. If you're not comfortable with fires just buy a few presto logs. They're easy to start and will keep the place warm.
* Don't flush anything besides toilet paper down the toilet. It is on a septic system. Please don't use harsh chemicals or bleach at the house. It will kill all the good critters in the system.
* Put your trash in the bin outside
* Strip bed and place sheets in hamper

Have a fabulous stay!
My stay at the cottage was great! There are additional amenities not listed in the description - for example, there is a DVD/TV, so if the weather is bad, you can always head up to the Fred Meyer in Warrington (~10min away by car) and grab a movie from the Redbox. Having said that, the weather was good for my stay, and there are plenty of hiking options with in an hour drive, including the beach (5-10 minute walk) and a long (~6 mile, one way) "Fort to Sea" trail that passes very close (~5 min walk) from the house. Cape Disappointment (in WA) and Ecola State Park (OR) are both fun to explore as well. On sunny days, the yard is great for relaxing, and has several comfy patio chairs. The one complaint I have is that the cottage is a little dark on the inside - Keelin has done a good job mitigating this through lighting, but it is still a little dim.
Keelin was very responsive to communications, and when I wanted to add on an additional day at the last minute, there were no complications.
In any case, I would stay here again in a heartbeat, and recommend it for any couple or group (up to four people) looking for a coast get away.
This was my second time staying at Keelin and Walter's cabin and it was just as fun and relaxing as the last time. Just a stone's throw from the beach and located in a quiet, calm neighborhood. The cabin is amply sized for two, the kitchen allows you to make your own meals, the fire pit out back was really enjoyable to sit around in the evening, and the bed is so comfortable and nice after a long day out poking around the beach. Keelin and Walter are very responsive hosts so if you have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to reach out. Thanks for having us again. :)
Shell Cottage was the perfect escape for a nice relaxing weekend. We loved the cozy cabin, the backyard, and the stroll down to the beach. It was easy to find and get in. Lovely accommodations! We would definitely go back.
This was our second time at Shell Cottage, and had a great time once again!
We really liked our stay at Shell Cottage! I find it so much more interesting to stay at unique, funky places than just a cookie-cutter condo that's sterile and boring. The mostly fenced back yard was perfect for our pup Lucy, and the beach access is RIGHT down the road. The cooking facilities are limited, which we were aware of from reading Keelin's listing. We were able to accomplish what we wanted as far as food with the griddle and hot plates, it just takes a little creativity in the small kitchen! We hope to come back again and stay longer!
Shell Cottage had some awesome features, it was close to the beach, there was a great fire pit outside, and it was close to Seaside and Astoria.
It was, unfortunately, much too small for three adults and a seven year old. There was a bit of a funky smell that got better once we got the scented garbage liner outside.
Over all, it would be a great place to crash out during the summer months, but was not the best to hang out (mostly) inside for a weekend.
We do say that the cottage is small yet functional.......we even go so far as to say it is best for a couple of family, so three adults was pushing it for being cozy. We are a family of five and still enjoy our time at the cottage, but we do agree that it can get a bit tight for more than two adults unless you are just looking for a place to spend the night. The price that we charge takes into account that it is small......but everyone loves it as much as we do for the most part, and we are glad that our guests still had a great time at the beach.

About the Host, Keelin
I am a middle school teacher who loves to travel. My daughter and I enjoy traveling together and experiencing new cultures, language and trying new foods. We have been to Guatemala, Italy, Canada and Japan together. I have used Airbnb myself in Japan, Washington and Canada. In the past,I have always rented apartments wherever possible when traveling. I have rented from individuals in Florence and Rome, and in Guatemala. I was always worried that these apartments that I had paid for might not really exist when I showed up. When I found Airbnb I knew it was a fit for me in my personal traveling and hosting style. I believe guests want their own space where they can explore Portland at their pace and in their style. Having an apartment with a kitchen to come home to makes traveling, especially with children, so much easier.
Woohoo! Walter and I got married on October 30, 2011! I am now Keelin Brubaker!
I grew up going to this indoor/outdoor museum and now I take the kids there. Visit a recreation of the fort that Lewis and Clark wintered in here in Oregon.
This is my favorite place for breakfast in the area. They are only open until 2pm so get there early(ish). Try their omlettes and you won't be disappointed!
Kareoke wednesdays with in house DJ (owner's son). Its a pretty funny place. They have video poker and a really good mexican bean dip plate for cheap!
There are very few shipwrecks visible on the west coast. Most are underwater. You can explore and climb on the wreck of the Peter Iredale. It has changed little since I was a kid.
This is my son's favorite part of Astoria! The trolley runs from one end of town to the other and costs $1.00 per person. You'll learn a lot about Astoria and have great river views.
An open air market with produce and crafts. A fun way to spend some of your Sunday.
This place has fabulous beer, a great vegetarian selection and an awesome atmosphere. They have live music, board games, and a patio for the summer. Oh! and did I mention handmade tables? Enjoy!
Walk all along the Astoria river front and jump on the trolley as it passes. Stop to see the sea lions and check out the ships.
A fun and informative museum for the whole family. You get to be on the water explore real boats and exhibits.
Have you seen Kindergarten Cop? This is the school that Arnold Schwarzeneggar "taught" at in the movie.
If you loved the Goonies then you'll want to check out the Goonies house and the movie museum. Park at the sign designated for Goonies and have a look around outside.
Another brewery with good seafood. Kids meals are served in a frisbee!
