About this listing
Canggu is a very exciting part of Bali. Still local, still fresh and still a little wild. It is not Seminyak or Kuta - thank heavens....
and my place is off the best street of Canggu - Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong - and its 1.8km from the beach.
Gladak is a 40 year old teak house form Java. No nails - just slotted... gorgeous. Has double bed (1.4m wide x 2.2m long) and a wardrobe and TV - delightful. Bathroom is next door.
1.8km from beach
Teak house (fan only) open bathroom attached
Second guest room in separate building (ac).
not a minimalist space!
Balinese family compound behind and on sides etc. looking across fields to the trees. ** sorry they are starting to build in the rice field so it will all change soon *** Great private spot... Quiet except for normal daily noises from Balinese families
No public transport. try scooters (about $4-5 a day to hire) or taxis ($2.50 to beach).or bicycles (about $3 a day -road to beach is flat) --
This is my home and as such suits me, not everybody. If you are looking for hotel standards - this is NOT the place for you - if you are looking for a delightful, not perfect place -- this is IT...
We are in the middle of the Balinese ricefields - that is - there are Balinese houses all around us.
this is not a traditional house... enjoy the unusual nature of the setup :)
THERE is somEtimes a DOG on the premises - a friendly delightful 2.5 year old Rottweiler, called Maxi. You can take him to the beach for a run or thru the rice fields...or ignore him .

i love my neighbourhood... walk up the path and there is Dandelion cafe and the lovely folks there and up the road is canggu day SPA and the lovely folks there ...
we are 1.8km from canggu beach -- surfers paradise. and lots and lots of excellent eating places (cheap and more pricy) and 5 spas and really a walk to or on the beach is heavenly :)
No public transport. try scooters (about $4-5 a day to hire) or Canggu transport to beach $5 or bicycles (about $3 a day -road to beach is flat)
Other Things to Note
if you like impersonal hotels -- this is not for you :)
of course be respectful
any damages will be paid for.
there is sometimes a dog on premises..Maxi -- Ketut will feed him. you are welcome to take him for walks at the beach.
An absolute dream! The house was beautiful, Shirley was so helpful and the location was great. We felt really at home and Maxi was delightful. Thanks for letting is stay, Shirley. I wish we could have stayed longer.
Shirley was really helpful during the booking process especially when our plans changed.
The house is definitely country living. There are two bedrooms; one with aircon and modern glazing which cuts you off from the outside and the main bedroom in a traditional Balinese wooden structure. This is more open to the elements and as such some people might struggle with the 'country living.' It gets pretty noisy with barking dogs, crowing cockerels, miaowing cats and the ever present gecko's! The light sleeper will struggle but if you want to feel immersed in what's going on around you then it'll suit you.
There's a resident dog - Maxi who is a BIG friendly dog and we enjoyed taking him to the beach. On the first night he somehow opened the kids bedroom door and got into bed with them. They and he seemed quite content with this arrangement!
The location allows for walkable access to a number of eateries and beaches are about a 15-20 minute walk though I would recommend renting mopeds or a car.
Yes that's the trick with lots of carved holes :) it's noisy ... And cool because the breeze gets thru... And yes I love the noise which I don't hear consciously but in the background of my sleep it's like a whole other world is going on with the animals :)
And Paul, you and your family are welcome back anytime! Thanks for being terrific guests
We had a great experience in Canggu thanks to this house, the place is really nice and clean, the location is perfect as is really close to the beach and to many cafés and restaurants, Maxi, the dog, is super cute!!! Definitely go there if you want to have a great time in Bali!!
Shirley's home felt like our home in Bali.
Relaxed and natural with the feeling of being part of the Canggu village. We stayed for five weeks and were lovingly cared for througout by Shirley and her extended Bainese family.
I have visited Bali many times and this was "the best"
The icing on the cake for me was Maxi .. The friendliest dog in the world, my walking companion and an endless source of entertainment. We will be back :)
We stayed at Canggu for four nights and it was out first place when we arrived in Bali. Pak Komang picked us up from the airport which was arranged by Shirley. We we came at the villa it was exactly as on the pictures even better. Pak Komang rented us a scooter at a good price and we drove around Canggu with it. We had a wonderful massage from his wife Ibu Ketut. You really feel safe there because the dog Maxi is protecting the place and knows exactly that you are staying there. We miss him already. If you need transport or will make a trip Pak Komang can arrange it for you or you can contact Shirley We really recommend this place. Gert and Anja
This was our first time in Bali and our first stay right after landing. It couldn't be better! Pak picked us up from the airport and showed us around. He and his family are very friendly. Shirley replied superfast and gave us some great tips that where very helpful. Thank you! The place is just like in the pictures, the dog is so cute and sweet. Everytime we were back at the house we got a warm welcome. The pool cools you down and the semi outside shower is just what you need. We stayed in the wooden room which is really beautifull and special. A real balinese experience. Canggu itself is fun and alive. Great places to eat and the house is nearby several beaches. Do rent a scooter, it makes it easier to get everywhere. Defently worth to stay here. The only bad thing is the rooster of the neighbours crowing almost all night long. Which made it hard to sleep, so bring earplugs. Maybe in the other room it's better, but the wooden room is so gorgeous!
Shirley's place is in the style of a traditional wooden Balinese house with fan and outdoor bathroom. The bed is very comfortable, though as it is Bali living and the place is close to the farms, roosters, dogs and cats plus nature sounds are aplenty. It lends charm to the place if you don't mind the noise. The room overlooks the rice field and has an outdoor pool and kitchen.
Shirley is lovely, friendly, and made an effort to meet me and take me through the amenities of her house. I enjoyed my stay here for 10 days.

About the Host, Shirley
I love Bali. Love to travel and thoroughly enjoy the abundance of Bali - the delightful people, food, plants, sunshine...Come and enjoy this wonderful island and stay.
"my story - I'm 60....I've been travelling overseas since I was 19... actually we travelled as a family since I was 6 years old. Kruger National Park each year, Mozambique each year around July, and then the sea - like Plettenberg Bay in summer time. Us "kids" all have it in our blood... I love the intertwinings, stories, colours and happy heart I get when travelling. Travelled to more than 30 plus countries and lived in 6 countries. And recently calculated 12 homes in last 12 years :) So at heart - a nomad.
Share my time between Victoria Australia and Bali :)
Travelled to Bali in 1975, and 1979 and now happily call it home. I really like and appreciate AirBNB - as a host and traveller (thanks guys!) - so easy and pleasant :)"
