About this listing
Casa Cuna del Golfo is a rustic beachfront two-bedroom home available for vacation rentals. The home is located on a large private hectare of immaculately groomed gardens that include lemon, orange, mango, water apple, and banana trees plus several old growth primary lowland palms and a large assortment of ornamental shrubs.
Howler monkeys are regular property visitors with occasional squirrel and white-faced to join the parade. The scarlet macaw, and two species of parrots are regular visitors in both couples and loud flocks. Look for toucans when the papayas are ripe. We have a resident tiger heron and a host of other wading birds, boons of frogs and slow fish. A wide range of lowland mammal species proliferate: raccoon, coatimundi, two species of anteater, agouti, three species of opossum, jaguarondi, tayra, and two species of sloths are all characteristic of the region, the odd mountain lion, ocelot, or jaguar pawing around in a bit denser woods but straying outforest for the hunt. The gulf is calving habitat for the humpback whale and receives of influx of schools of whale sharks yearly. The Golfo Dulce, so named for the extensive amount of freshwater that it receives, is the tenth deepest gulf in the world. It is greatly celebrated (wrongly) as a tropical fjord (a specious oxymoron), and while that is all nonsense, it is nevertheless a maritime marvel.
The Casa Cuna lawn is neatly manicured and flat with extensive areas of shade for lounging. The beach in this protected part of the gulf, is very tame, more like a lake than a seashore, and wave action never rises above a couple inches and is typically nearly dead calm, with little more than ripples lapping the shoreline. Mangroves are abundant along this stretch of low-lying coast and bound the properties boundaries on both sides of the principle beach access. A gravel walkway connects the beach to the front porch of the home.
The two story home features open-air architecture and is remarkably cool, even chilly at night, even without the fans. Each of the two bedrooms has a queen sized bed. But there are also two additional double foam mattresses the second story porch and its floor space for spill-over sleeping. The overhang of the roof was built with Costa Rican rains in mind, and all the windows and the porch are safe from the spray of rainfall except during the most windy and violent of weather.
A combined living room and dining area includes an enormous dining table with seating for ten and a well equipped kitchen with lots of counter space and a new refrigerator. The single first floor bathroom is tiled and simple. There is no hot water.
There are two sets of concrete yard tables for outdoor dining and hammocks both in the yard and on the second story verandah. An outdoor wash sink is available for washing clothes and outdoor water supply.
There are porches on both the first and second floor, with hanging hammock seats on the first floor verandah and an extensive second stoor patio overlooking the extensive lawns in front of the home that extend to the shore.
Casa Cuna del Golfo boasts full electrical power and cell phone access. There is no television. There is no home Internet, but for those that wish to bring their own laptops, we can provide an Internet data card for use, though it's up to the clients to put credit on it.. Water supply is from a well. A caretaker lives permanently next to the property and provides security and maintenance as needed. The caretaker's wife provides catering services upon request for a modest additional fee.
The home is fully equipped with linens, towels, and kitchenware and has private parking and extensive orchards. Beyond the watchman--who can provide some guiding and support services--our Puerto jimenez management company, Osa Corcovado Tour and Travel is a full service tour and travel agency and can coordinate tours, transport, rental cars, sport fishing, permits for Corcovado National Park, domestic air ticketing and charter flights, other vacation rentals around the peninsula, and a wide variety of additional services.
At $60 per night, Casa Cuna del Golfo is the least expensive beach vacation rental on the entire peninsula. While ours is a rustic destination without television and other trappings of the world back home, we offer a great value, spectacular nature on the shores of the Golfo Dulce, and privacy for your family's vacation lodging at a great price. We are close enough to town so that it is convenient for business yet far removed from the dust, heat, and rowdy bustle of town so that visitors can take care of town business and retreat to the sumptuous and inexpensive convenience of Casa Cuna del Golfo once business is taken care of to enjoy the bucolic pleasures of the Cañaza coast.
We had a wonderful time in La Cuna. It really is a little bit of paradise. It's everything described in the listing and more. This is the Costa Rica I've been dreaming of (and have failed to find in 18 months living in the country). The surroundings are amazing and the cabin itself is simple but has been beautifully and tastefully designed and equipped by the owner and his German wife. It's about 15 minutes from the town by car on a good road. Your own transport would be very useful. Otherwise you'd just have to stock up on food and enjoy swimming in a warm, calm sea, kayaking, fishing, hanging out in the plunge pool, lazing in a hammock, barbecuing, sunbathing on the beach, watching the wild life, soaking in the beauty of the place .... . The owner's brother lives in a nearby cabin. He has his own transport and is very helpful. There are many different trips and days out you can arrange while you are in the area. However there is frankly so much wildlife in the immediate area and so much to enjoy that supplementary activities are wonderful but not essential.
This is an amazing place and the cabin offers great value.
