La Bergerie is a stone cottage in a hamlet amongst vineyards on the slopes of the Caroux in the Haut Languedoc Regional Park with great views across the valley. Walks through magnificent scenery, and spectacular gorges with rock pools for swimming.
La Bergerie at Les Horts was built in the 17th century as a stone shepherd's cottage in the beautiful valley of the Juar river, now part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Park. A set of stone steps leads off a restricted-access track through the village of Les Horts, to the secluded landscaped garden which surrounds the property. La Bergerie has been imaginatively converted and extended to accommodate four guests in comfort with all modern amenities.
The track which runs past the house through the village of Les Horts, twists up to the top of the ridge, where it joins one of the grande randonée signposted hiking trails. With the house situated in the middle of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Park, it is a walking paradise, with many treks across the wild Caroux region, punctuated with refreshing mountain pools. Canoes can be rented for trips down the rapids of the Orb from Tarrasac (5km). The old railway line through the valley has been converted to a beautiful cycle ride; bikes and electric bikes are available for hire.
Mountain bikes, rock climbing, horse riding and even golf are all catered for nearby. There are a wide range of tourist activities available in the Langedoc-Rousillon region.
The nearest beaches are about an hour away at Valras-Plage, with many more beautiful beaches along the stretch from Marseillan-Plage to the old fishing port of Sète. However, there is great swimming in the refreshing local rivers, mountain streams and lakes in the summer.
Guests have access to the whole house and garden
Interaction with Guests
Our friend who looks after the house lives 50m up the road.
Situated in the middle of the Haut Languedoc National Park, in the Department of Herault, the whole area is a walking paradise, with treks up, down and across the wild Caroux punctuated with refreshing mountain pools.
We love to relax on the terrace, and cycle down to Mons cafe along the old railway line for breakfast (but it is a harder ride back up the hill).
There are a wide range of tourist activities available in the Langedoc-Rousillon region. For those driven by the obligatory trip to the seaside, the nearest beaches are about an hour away at Valras-Plage or Serignan-Plage. Longer reaches of sand can be found along the stretch from Marseillan-Plage to the old fishing port of Sète.
A couple of hours away, the mediaeval fortress city of Carcassonne is always popular with the children. The route is steeped in the Cathars history of religious wars with several ruined hilltop castles, and their knights templar and holy grail mysteries.
We recommend a car as it is quite a long way from big towns and airports, though people have managed with public transport; a bus runs periodically along the valley from Bedarieux, or even Montpellier.
Closest airport is Beziers-Vias (45 mins) for flights from Paris Orly, London Luton and Bristol with RyanAir . Montpellier airport is about 1.5 hrs drive, or Carcassonne, Perpignan and Nimes (all about 2 hrs drive). You may also find good value flights to Barcelona (3.5 hrs drive) or Gerona (3 hrs) in Spain.
The TGV Train goes from Paris to Montpellier, and some to Bezier, with connecting local train or bus to Bedarieux station.

Fantastic stay and a beautiful well equipped house. The photos on the web site can't even begin to do it justice. Juliet was also very helpful with providing tips before we went. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone.
La Bergerie is pure heaven on earth - we could not have been happier with our stay, and we will definitely return. The views of the mountains were superb, the bergerie was full of rustic charm, and had all the necessities we needed to cook and enjoy ourselves. The hamlet of Les Horts was very welcoming, and the surrounding area was divine. This was the best vacation we've had in many many years, and our 3 year old and 6 year old agreed.
I am married to Mike and have a son and daughter who have recently left home. We have been holidaying in France regularly for over 20 years, after living in Paris for 4 years, and love our time spent at Les Horts.
