Villa Cengkeh is located at 440m MSL at about 8 km from Singaraja, North Bali. It is set in a peaceful and fresh location. The surroundings are rice fields, coconut trees, and a beautiful waterfall. Here you can enjoy truly Balinese life.

The Space

The villa offers a spectacular view on the Bali Sea: when the weather is favorable you can even see the Volcano Baluran, which is about 80 km away, in Java. The house is conceived with a Western point of view and some Balinese touches, for example the ceiling.

The villa is set on the slope of a hill, and is easily accessible from the nearby road. It was built in 2009 using the best materials available here, such as bengkirai wood, first class ceramic and granite, German handles, Toto toilets and Panasonic switches. It is a two floor house: the first floor includes an open kitchen joined with a living room, a repository, and a bathroom, plus a balcony from which it's possible to reach the garden. On the second floor there is another room with a fantastic view, a bedroom, also with e very nice view, and a bathroom. On this floor there are also a terrace and a balcony.

The kitchen is fully equipped, and a large table can accomodate up to six people. The water is safe to drink, unlike most places in Bali. A washing machine is located in the bathroom on the first floor.

Although the house is air conditioning ready, it is indeed not needed, on the contrary a pleasant breeze is almost constant due to the position on the hill, and nights can be quite fresh.

A D-Link 3.75 HSUPA USB adapter, provided freely to guests, can connect you to the internet. You only need to buy a data plan from a local operator. For example, the operator Three offers several yearly plans to be used with an USB modem such as the one provided: 2 GB (60,000 Rp.), 5 GB (100,000 Rp.), 16 GB (300,000 Rp.), and 32 GB (450,000 Rp.).

On the roof there is an antenna which provides an alternative direct access to the internet through Spicelink, a local provider, for a separate fee. In addition, a D-Link 600L Wi-Fi router is available for guests, so that several people can share the connection. A voltage stabilizer is also part of the equipment.

The villa is named after two nice magnolia (cengkeh) trees, with orange and white flowers. The garden features beautiful bougainvillea, frangipane, and other flowers, as well as fruit trees, such as coconut, banana, cocoa, tangerine, cloves, mangustine, and durian. The house is literally surrounded by greenery. Dry walls and tiles are all handmade.

A small parking lot can accommodate up to two motorbikes. Cars can be parked on the nearby road.

Guest Access

Guests can access the villa, the whole garden, and the surrounding land with no restrictions.

Interaction with Guests

I will be in touch with guests in order to help them solve any possible issue. I can also take care of the garden if guests prefer not to bother with it. And a housekeeper can come clean the house if requested.

The Neighborhood

The villa is located at about 8 km from Singaraja, which is the nearest town: the road from there offers very nice views. Sometimes you hear traditional music from the nearby temple, which is somehow magical, also because the temple is hidden by the trees. From the villa there are many beautiful places to visit. The nearest is a wonderful waterfall just around the corner, at about 1.5 km, in Sambangan. From there it is possible to start trekking. Another very nice waterfall is located in Git Git, and a spectacular one in Lemukih. Just past Lovina, in Banjar, there are very pleasant hot springs set among lots of trees and flowers. Farther away, after Singaraja, there is Air Sanih, with pools of fresh water near the sea. Going towards Denpasar there are three lakes: Beratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan, where it is possible to take a small boat. And just beyond them there is a fantastic botanic garden in Bedugul, which includes Bali Treetop, an adventure park.

Getting around

A motorbike or a car is needed to get around. I can pick you up at the airport if you need to.

  • Villa is very spacious and view is really awesome. It is located about 15-20 minutes on the motorbike or car from the nearest town Singaraja and the same distance to tourist place Lovina near the ocean. There is not much you can do there, only one pretty crowded tiny beach is available in Lovina, nearest supermarket in Singaraja. If you go to the opposite direction, after 1 hour of driving you will get to Bedugul, there is beautiful botanic garden and a couple of lakes. Village Kedu road is just near the house, so be prepared to hear motorbikes riding up and down by the hill all the time and specialy it is noisy at the mornings. Wireless internet provided by Spicelink, they charge about $70 for 512Kbps per month, connection is pretty flacky and unstable, but usable. Sudarmi is friendly and responsive host. She was solving all problems in the house very quickly after we mention them.

    Response from Sudarmi:

Hello Sergey, I'm very surprised by your comment, you never mentioned noise as a problem while you were staying at the villa. Motorbikes all the time? Are you kidding? It's simply not true! Yes, there is a road nearby, and I told you so before you booked the villa (the village is about 500 m away, but there are a few local houses around the villa, just nearby on the other side of the road, which is above the house. On this side of the road there are no houses, just trees.), but there can be one motorbike passing by every ten minutes, at best. As you know Kedu is a very tiny village, it's impossible to have noisy traffic, what you're saying makes no sense. In the morning people go to work and there is a 15 minutes span that can be noisy. That's all. The prevalent sounds are birds, dogs and chicken. People who stayed at the villa before I started to rent it with airbnb were all pleased by its silence.

Regarding the internet, I agree with you that it's very expensive. Also in this case I told you the prices that Spicelink (with whom I'm not associated with in any way) charges *before* you booked the villa, so it was your choice to go ahead. Your answer was "However, they charge more than the average for that speed. But if the house is deep in countryside and if there is no other internet providers around – it may explain the price." You were not forced to use Spicelink, and I told you so as well, the alternative is to use an USB modem, which is cheaper. And told you also this *before* you booked, but *you* chose not to use it. In fact you also wrote "I think I will need the Spicelink internet to be working during our stay, or at least at the first month, then I will see how stable it is and decide." If Spicelink was not ok for you, you could just not renew it, but you did.

You also say that there isn't much around here. This was not your first time in Bali, why did you come to this area then? You mentioned a few places, but there are many more. First off, there is a beautiful waterfall just around the corner, in Sambangan. Then there is the Git Git waterfall. Then there is the waterfall in Lemukih. Then there is one more waterfall near Lovina. Just past Lovina there are also very nice hot springs. I asked you several times if you wanted me to show you the surroundings, but you never wanted. People who come and stay in North Bali are looking for peace and relax, there are many foreigners who live around here and have chosen this area just because it's beautiful and quiet.
