Andrea's Private Bath T Downtown

House - Private room · Savin Hill Ave, Boston, MA 02125, United States

Spacious room with private bathroom and full size bed, 3 windows overlooking the garden and the walk to the beach behind the house. Nearby parks, 8 minutes to the Red Line then 12 minutes to downtown, 25 minutes to Cambridge. We have ample off street parking.

The Space

We live in an 18 room 160 year old house that was once occupied by just one family! Barney has lived here all of his life, our 4 children grew up here, and we like the combination of a small town dynamic, living on the beach while 20 minutes from the center of the city.

Guest Access

There is a full kitchen for guests to make meals, as well as a back porch to enjoy, weather permitting. There is ample off street parking. A laundry room is available and reliable wifi access is provided to all guests.

Interaction with Guests

We interact with guests when we are around, which is usually in the evenings. We're happy to offer conversation and guidance about Boston and New England. We are available to greet and facilitate our guests' visits and can be around as much, or as little, as needed.

The Neighborhood

Savin Hill is a diverse, residential neighborhood with lots of families and trees. There are paths to jog or walk on the beach, easy access to bike rental, food shopping, restaurants, and coffee shops. The neighborhood has deep roots - people who come here, stay here. There are lots of large Victorian houses, two city parks and a path along the harbor. We are a 10 minute walk from the local breakfast and lunch spot, McKenna's, and for dinner and drinks, Savin Kitchen. About a 20 minute walk away is Shanti, an Indian restaurant and Harp and Bard, an Irish Pub, serving the usual fare. The John F. Kennedy Library is located on the water, a very short walk away, as is the University of Massachusetts.

Getting around

We are located an easy and pleasant 10 minute walk from the red line T station, providing access to and from all parts of the city, airport, Amtrak train, bus station, ferries to Cape Cod and the north shore, and trains to the suburbs. The "T" operates from early morning until about midnight on the weekdays and later on the weekends.

Other Things to Note

You can walk out of the back yard to Dorchester Bay and the beach. The harbor walk bike path starts there and goes on for miles.

  • It was great staying at the Carney house in Andrea's Private Bath room. The room was large enough for myself and my friend, the room was clean and comfortable. The Carney's were able to accommodate us by putting another fold out bed in the room, which was super nice of them. The neighborhood is very nice and the short walk to and from the subway entrance was pleasant even when returning late at night. Mary and Barney were very friendly and made sure we felt welcome, they went out of their way to make sure we had a great time and we did. I would certainly stay here again next time I'm visiting Boston. Thank you very much for the great stay!

  • I'm an author who had research to do at the JFK Library. The Carney house is perfectly situated for such work. It's a 20-minute walk to UMass/JFK (the actual location, not the station) and only a half-mile from the Savin Hill stop. This worked out very well for me. The house is set up so that visitors have their own kitchen and living room. Everyone kept to themselves, which for me was great. It was sort of like a BNB atmosphere, but without the meddling that sometimes comes with that format (and without a formal breakfast, though Barney was kind enough to have coffee and cake out for guests each morning). I had an unusual need for a refrigerator as I'm a new mom (use your imagination), and the shared kitchen was no problem at all on that front. The only caution I'd give is that there isn't the typical security at this spot as you'd find in most rentals, and while I've no doubt it's a safe area, I'd treat it as a I would a hostel overseas -- as in, don't leave anything behind that is irreplaceable. (I admittedly tend to be a little paranoid about such things.)

Thank you all for a lovely stay! I hope to be back.

  • My friend and I had a great stay! It was beautiful when we arrived, just one or two days after the snow storm, the whole place was covered white.. Barney & Mary's is very cozy and comfortable. The muffins were yummy! Extremely convenient to have the full use of kitchen and laundry room. Barney was helpful on everything we've asked...especially when I mentioned my purpose of visit, he even reached out his networking to help me connect with locals. What a great experience and feel!! Location is very convenient, ten mins walk to T and the neighborhood was quiet, and safe with a lake/park area behind...:-)

  • Barney & Mary were very gracious hosts. They both made us feel very welcome and at home.

Their location was central to everything and easy to get to the T. We'd recommend The Carneys's home to everyone planning a visit to the Boston area.

  • The Carney's were excellent hosts over the duration of my stay. They go above and beyond in welcoming you into their home and are open to any questions or requests you may have. The room itself is gorgeous and the private bath is an added convenience. Breakfast in the morning is especially helpful if you enjoy getting up and starting your day early. I could not have asked for a better place to stay. Thanks again Barney and Mary!

  • We had a really great stay with the Carney family in their very nice house! Great rooms and bathrooms! We truly enjoyed the relaxed, comfortable setting of the Carney home, and the morning breakfast (with freshly baked muffins) was delicious! We used the bike hub at JFK station (about 1k walk), and cycled to the conference center (BCEC). After the conference, we used the bikes for Boston sightseeing as well! It is very easy to go to the beach for running! We really enjoyed! This was our first opportunity to experience airbnb and our stay with the Carneys has reinforced that we will use airbnb in the future and hopefully visit the Carneys when we return to Boston! I will tell about you to all colleagues looking for a place to stay in Boston.

  • Beautiful old Boston mansion with extremely thought-out accommodations including a bedroom with sitting area, private bath, and even slippers, all within the home of an incredibly amiable family.
Our only complaint was that our schedule did not allow us to stay longer in this beautiful setting.
It is a bit of a trek outside of the heart of Boston, but well worth it. The family and their children were quite giving of their time in answering all of our questions!

  • Thank you to carney family. It was a nice place to stay in Boston, not far away from downtown where you have an easy entree to Boston Freedom Trail. The room is like the picture und very clean and cozy! I loved the place. It is absolutely recommendable.

Mary, Barney and Robert Carney live here in the Savin Hill neighborhood of Boston. As a family we've lived in this house for about 27 years, but Robert's only 17 - not so long for him! Also here from time to time are the three other members of the family: Andrea, who's 31, and John and Grace who are 20 year old twins. We're Bostonians and New Englanders from birth; we spend time here, in Provincetown and in Vermont. We don't have much spare time because Mary and Barney work and Robert goes to the oldest school in the United States, Boston Latin School. We're all involved in community activities, mostly music - choirs, bands and the like, some politics and some church, and many other kinds of activities. We live in what may be the most diverse square mile in Boston - people of every model and make. We've always had people living with us; we've sponsored refugees and had guests from around the world. There are lively discussions and debates about everything from quantum mechanics to driving habits, from living to dying, from rock climbing to meditation.
