The Space

The room faces the backyard and if you are lucky and wake up at the right moment, you'll see a hummingbird fly by. Instead of traffic noise you will wake up hearing the birds chirping.

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast, that comes with fresh fruit, a good cup of coffee or tea, real bread and marmalade or cereal. We also have a Magic Bullet if you'd rather mix up a smoothie.

We have a large colorful living room with large windows letting in a lot of sunlight, which really is the place to sit and relax, read a book and check the e-mails and plan out your trip.

If you don't speak any Spanish or little, no problem. We also speak English and German. French is rusty, but I have a neighbor that can help if needed.

I have tons of books around, bring one and leave another one.

In case of any questions, just ask and I'll be happy to answer them.

Guest Access

You get use of the kitchen and washing machine and if needed you can surf on one of our computers. The bathroom is shared, but if you prefer a private bathroom, I could offer you the smaller blue room instead since that has a private bathroom adjacent to the room (see listing room/532613).

Interaction with Guests

That is up to you: entirely.

We love to share and enjoy common meals. We can toss a coin who cooks. We have been on trips, walked downtown and hung out in the local bars, but we respect the space and silence just the same.

The Neighborhood

We have some great restaurants and bars only a few blocks to the north in up-coming Barrio Escalante or head on over to San Pedro with it's night time hustle and bustle from the university crowd. Since my son Noel has turned 18 this year, he'll be happy to be your guide.

In case you are staying with us on the weekend, join us for a trip to the farmers market, where we stock up on fruits and veggies. In case you'd like your adrenaline going, join me for a bike ride.

We are 1 block from Avenida Central in Barrio Francisco Peralta / east of Los Yoses / south of Escalente (East of downtown and before San Pedro).

Close to the UCR, Veritas, U Latina and some other universities.

Getting around

During the day catch the inexpensive buses that pass by every other minute to move around, once it gets dark you are better off catching a cab.
Bus stop is one block away. Any bus saying: San Pedro works

For your trip from the airport we can recommend a great shuttle service for $ 30 flat rate or if you arrive during the day you can catch the public bus from the airport to downtown and then a cab which all together will cost around $ 5-7, which is what I usually do too.

Other Things to Note

For years we have tried to help the animals that cross our path and we do have a couple of friendly dogs and cats, which we have rescued off the streets and which we haven't been able to place into permanent homes yet. While the 2 cats mostly keep to themselves and will hide from you, the dogs will go for a walk with you anytime. They know the neighborhood pretty well and will lead you along.

  • I stayed at Alexandra's for my first 2 nights in San Jose the apartment is nice and is about a 10 minute walk into downtown. During the day I walked about and got to know San Jose, but didn't have much to do at night.

  • Our experience with Alexandra was awesome. She gave us thorough directions and we found the place with no problem. She greeted us at the door with her dogs and was warm and immediately welcoming. She made us coffee and was very hospitable. She was very informative about what to see in San José, and how to get there, she even gave us a map just incase. She was a terrific host and I enjoyed playing around with her dogs and chatting with her and her son.
The rental was everything it said it would be. Great plant life outside the window, and the bed was very comfortable. The location was great and a very short walking distance to the main center of the city, museums, shopping, etc. I would highly recommend this rental to others interested. Thanks again for everything Alexandra

  • Terrific host! Very helpful & a complete pleasure to share her home. I lost my passport downtown, San Jose, within hours of my arrival. Alexandria gave up a day to guide me through the maze of obtaining a replacement. I really don't know what I would have done without her calming, informative & understanding approach to my problem. It was like having a guardian angel - seriously.

  • Charlotte and Duane Brown lolled in epic two-week pura vida/pure life with Alexandra. Breakfasts were delightful! Our hostess, Alexandra, was gracious and provided a relaxing, comfortable homey space. We felt welcomed and pampered above our expectations. We were taken care of in a personal and friendly way from the moment we arrived until the time to go home. Thank you for making our trip memorable and fun!

  • As my first time using airbnb and visiting Costa Rica on my own, Alexandra was extremely helpful, responsive, and streamlined the process. She helped arrange the shuttle from the airport to her locatjon and even helped me with information and to book my tours during my stay.

The location is about walkable to downtown and only 2 blocks from the hus stop. The bed was comfortable and I was able to use the kitchen to cook dinner. Alexandra was really sweet and offered fruits and her handmade bread for breakfast and was overall a great host - I would book with her again!

  • We had a great stay with Alexandra and her sweet dogs! The apartment is spacious, the bed was very comfortable in our room, and the coffee, fresh baked bread, and fruit in the am was wonderful! My partner, 5 year old daughter, and I stayed at Alexandra's our first and last nights in Costa Rica, as our flights landed and took off from San Jose at inconvenient hours. Alexandra's was a great launch pad and sending off point for our family adventures. Alexandra went out of her way to be welcoming and facilitate things for us, such as walking us to the nearest ATM, lending us much needed (and foolishly forgotten) bug spray and after sun lotion, and holding on to our winter coats for us while we explored the coast....a great experience, we would definitely stay there again.

  • My boyfriend and I enjoyed our short stay with Alexandra. We got to know her as a person by asking some questions about her career and how she got there. It was pleasant. She offered us tea, fruits and even gave me a little bit of jewelry her and her son had made together. The room is just as pictured. It is simple and basic, but all we needed was a bed. We did not have to sleep with a fan on or A/C during our visit. The linens were clean. The bathroom was shared, but good enough for my visit. The dogs were absolutely precious and so sweet. They really made my stay even more enjoyable. Alexandra gave us fresh fruits and also an icy bottle of water near our bed side. The directions she provided were simple and easy for the cab driver. I would recommend staying with her and getting to know her as an individual as well!

Love to read, enjoy the days as they come. Every now and then a stray comes along - some have stayed, while other cats and dogs have found new homes, so there is always some assortment of 4 legged friends around. I have started to add a couple of additional listings from very good friends and I do vouch for each of the listings added. I hope that these listings can round out a trip to Costa Rica!
