The Old School House B&B was a fantastic experience. The hosts, Lillian and Dominic, are exceptionally friendly and accommodating. They provided heeps of helpful information, made us feel welcome, and even entertained our three young children. The Old School House is situated in a beautiful area in Kerry, close to a beautiful sand beach and many nearby towns (only minutes drive) containing shops and pubs and many spectacular sights, including an old abbey and a castle that you can ender and explore. I highly recommend the Old School House. We hope to return again.
Dominik and Lillian were not home when we arrived but they kept in constant communication with us about our arrival and someone was there to greet us when we got there. We never ended up formally meeting Lillian as we only stayed one short night and she was busy in the kitchen the next morning. We, along with other guests, were there to catch the boat to Skellig Michael Island in the morning, which unfortunately did not depart due to the weather. We did although meet Dominik who is extremely personable and loves to entertain at breakfast with singing, magic and Donald Duck voices, definitely a center stage kind of guy! I came down for breakfast early in the morning and he was singing and playing guitar in the sunroom, which was absolutely lovely. Wasn't quite awake enough for Donald Duck... Other guests came down to the sun room, which was an opportunity to meet other people and talk about our plans and travels. This can be a bonus staying in Airbnbs that have a hostel feel to them. I appreciated Dominik's stories and such about the area, which were very informative and interesting but it was difficult to compete with his self aggrandizement (magic, interrupting) when trying to learn more about the other guests and gain tips from their own Ireland travels. He is a wonderful man for sure, genuinely kind and warmhearted, just be ready to be the audience for he loves playing the host and the entertainer! Breakfast was lovely, the pancakes were some of the best I've ever had. I think it must be the fresh eggs from the chickens in back, which we found very entertaining but unfortunately one guest said she was woken very early in the morning by the rooster who was just below her room. In regard to the room unfortunately I don't have positive things to say. Whomever cleaned and prepped our room missed the toilet and so we were greeted with a "surprise" when we lifted the lid. The bed is extremely uncomfortable, I hardly slept. The walls are super thin-I could hear someone's phone vibrating in the room next to us, along with their conversation. My hubby took a five minute shower the next morning and within a couple minutes there was standing water up to his ankles. Unfortunately I have to report that for the money (and I know there are other places in town charging as much or more and maybe in better shape!) it was not worth it for us. The highlights-Domink's guitar playing and singing, the lovely sunroom and nice open dining room with fireplace to socialize, Dominik's big, warm hug as we departed (which unfortunately left his very strong cologne all over me for the rest of the day) the pancakes and the almost opportunity to engage with other travelers. I hate to leave a mixed review especially when some of it is just personal but how I felt when we left were mixed...
Thanks for the lengthy feedback guys and my apology for the fact that your toilet was[used]we need to keep the doors closed,we did however change the beds this year so maybe they are a bit hard yet sorry you did not have a good sleep but happy you did enjoy the pancakes .We would love the chance to meet you both again and promise to pull out all the stops and ,ill even put tape on Dominicks mouth so you can converse with the other guests ,he does love to entertain bless him ,hope to meet you soon lillian.
We got a warm welcome from the host and his staff. Our room was spacious, comfortable and had a kind of psychedelic-70s charm. The beds were above average and we slept soundly to wake to a scrumptious breakfast. Our genial host Dominic regaled us with his talent for magic and although his breakfast-making skills were truly impressive, his disappearing salt trick just blew our minds!
It's an old school building from the mid 1800s with interesting stories to tell. We found it on the main road just as we approached on the R566 from Valentia and passing the arts center on our right (well worth a look in, by the way) to find the Old School House on our left hand side about 1.5k further east. The location is quiet and in a beautiful countryside area - a morning walk in the locale will set you up nicely for the day.
Aside from the entertainments and the good eats, our hosts went the extra mile for us too by sorting us out with much needed phone chargers and some last minute directions and travel advice which made our day's touring so much better than in our original plan, so kudos for attention to detail and for that diplomatic intervention.
We had a great welcome with tea and scones. Dominique was s with all his stories, songs and magic,
We really appreciatie that he arrangeur a bokking to skellig!
We had a lovely time in The Old School House in Ballinskelligs, easy to find and the room was clean and comfortable. Lillian and Dominick were wonderful hosts and breakfast was great, particularly the pancakes!
Beautiful part of the country and we were also able to easily drive to Portmagee for a trip out to Skellig Michael which was a very special experience.
My family had a wonderful time in the area and loved the Old School House. Lillian and Dominick made us all feel so welcome. They were great with our 2 year old daughter and listened to my fathers stories. The food was great! There were 7 of us and our meal times together were very nice!
Lillian and Dominique were fabulous hosts. They provided us with tips on where to go for dinner and which scenic route to drive through. Very convenient location to go see Skellig Islands. The place felt like home and they were kind enough to serve us breakfast. Highly recommended.
