Mahonys & Kileen Cottages are in a cul-de-sac, bordering The National Park. Ideal for 2 families while enabling social distancing. Our place is in a very quite area and yet so convenient to Killarney Town Centre. Kileen and Mahonys are semi-detached cottages and have wonderful patio areas for outdoor relaxation.

When you think of Ireland, you may think of rolling green hills and meadows spanning as far as the eye can see. You may expect rocky cliffs bordering along raging seas. Small towns seemingly consisting of one main road, a two-lane road at that, passing by quaint stone churches, tiny pubs and stone cottages with flowerboxes overflowing with colour, even on rain-filled days. You may imagine fields filled with sheep, tiny roads that can occupy even tinier cars, and Irish music filling the air with song. And except for the Irish music wafting about everywhere you go, all you expect of Ireland would not be a figment of your imagination, but an actual sense of what you'll encounter during your vacation to the Irish countryside and coasts. Mahonys Cottage is located on the edge of the beautiful National Park, close to the beautiful Killarney lakes with the Purple Mountains looming on the opposite side.
From Mahonys Cottage it is only a short drive to a lot of Kerry and Killarney’s treasures including the Gap of Dunloe, Ring of Kerry, Killarney National Park, Valentia Island, Dingle Peninsula, Beara Peninsula, Killorglin Town and the breath taking Inch beach.

Killarney National Park
Ireland's first National Park lies to the south and west of Killarney town at the foot of Ireland's highest mountain range, The MacGillycuddy's Reeks. Killarney National Park contains the most extensive areas of natural woodland remaining in Ireland.
The park today covers an area of over 26,000 acres with numerous walking trails. The park also boasts the three world famous Lakes of Killarney.
A traditional feature of Killarney is its jaunting cars which are available for hire in the town and at other locations adjoining the National Park. During your stay in Killarney you can enjoy the many walking trails in the National Park and don't forget your camera as you might get the opportunity to photograph some rare red deer.
Muckross House and Gardens
The focal point of the National Park and a major tourist attraction in the area is Muckross House, gardens and farms. Dating from 1843 it is a former private residence where you can view the children's toys, the famous Killarney furniture of the library & drawing room & the famous specially prepared bedroom where Queen Victoria slept during her visit in 1861.

At Muckross Traditional Farms you are invited to take a stroll down memory lane, to a time before the advent of electricity when all work was carried out using traditional methods. Meet and chat with the farmers and their wives as they go about their daily work in the houses, on the land, and with the animals. Visitors can also enjoy a trip aboard the Muckross Vintage Coach which circulates the farms.
Gap of Dunloe
The Gap of Dunloe is one of the most stunningly beautiful parts of County Kerry and indeed Ireland. Stretching through the MacGuillicuddy Reeks mountain range, this beautiful glacial valley simply must be experienced to be appreciated.

Guests can be collected from the entrance to the cul de sac, with prior arrangement with the tour company for this memorable trip. The tour begins with a short coach journey to Kate Kearney's Cottage where you can take a jaunting car or go on horseback or walk through the six-mile pass.
Once through the gap, boats are waiting for the homeward journey via the enchanting Upper, Middle & Lower Lakes to historic Ross Castle where coaches await for the journey back to Killarney. This trip lasts most of the day, leaving at 10 am and arriving back at 4.30 pm approx.
Walking and Hiking
Roam through deserted countryside, get off the beaten track and let your imagination loose amongst luscious green hills and heather-coated Kerry mountains.
We are happy to recommend one of the many designated walking paths in the area; everything from a hike up Ireland's highest mountain to a gentle stroll through Killarney's National Park.
Killarney
Killarney is one of Ireland's top tourist destinations and is well known for its excellent shops, restaurants and cosmopolitan appeal. During summer months, the lively on-street musical entertainment complements the meandering of tourists and locals alike. On bright evenings one can browse in a bookstore, admire art, or savour the delights of homemade ice cream or a finely prepared lobster.
Boating and Fishing
Fishing on the lakes can be arranged from Ross Castle. The approximate cost is €100 per boat (max 3 + gillie per boat) for 2 hours of fishing, with all equipment/tackle and tuition provided. Alternatively drop a line for Brown Trout and Salmon in the River Laune which flows from Killorglin. or you can simply while away a few hours by yourself, the silence only disturbed by the sound of the flowing river.

Horse Riding
For those feeling a little adventurous, why not take a 1, 2 or 3 hour guided trek through the National Park which may be arranged with Killarney Riding Stables.

My name is Carmel, I am married to Jim and we have three beautiful children. They are all young men now. We love to visit our boys who have lived in various countries. So far we have visited them in Australia, Texas, Scotland, Dubai and England.
I am the youngest of 14 children. There are 13 remaining and we all live in Ireland. We managed to meet some of my cousins, whose ancestors emigrated in the 1880's to Australia, during our visit there. I also have cousins in the USA but haven't managed yet to track them down.
Jim and I have been living in Killarney for 35 years and we love it here. We are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful place. We like to walk, hike and jog. We also play golf when we get time.
Jim and the boys are passionate followers of Irish rugby and Gaelic football.
We have a very special member of our family called "Smokie". She is a crossbreed between a labrador and a collie. As she is 6 years old she keeps us busy.
