We are a small, friendly and very affordable Eco lodge on the shore of lake Victoria. We are full service but relaxed and specialize in good food.

The space

An intimate and quiet Eco Lodge resort on three acres of Rusings Island, bordering Lake Victoria. Four self contained sleeping bandas are available with total of 8 beds and a bar/restaurant is on site for food and drinks. We offer bird watching, hiking, fossil hunting, cultural sightseeing and boating. Campers are also welcome.

We practice good food on your time schedule. You tell us when you want to eat and if you are a vegan or vegetarian we do our best to accommodate your needs. We like to mix it up with fried rice, fish, thai payaya salad or eggplant parmesan to name a few ideas. Or you could have our screaming lettuce salad and special grilled cheese sandwiches. Service is buffet style.

Expect to have warm weather with lots of sunshine, birds singing, animal noises in the neighborhood but pretty quiet and relaxing at Wayando. We have no TV but do play music in the bar which closes down at dark pretty much to the public. We welcome dinner parties and hope that some of our local friends show up to get good conversations going.

Wayando is practicing Permaculture so expect to find composting toilets, recycling grey water projects , banana circles and organic gardening. We grow fruit and veggies as much as possible. We use no pesticides or fertilizers and dislike trash and plastics waste. We are trying to be a demonstration site for our friends and neighbors. We love Rusinga and want to keep it green.

Nearby are fishing villages and boats and children and lots of things to walk around and see. Piki Piki motorcycles with drivers are always available to tour you around the island. We pick the good ones and can direct you to the best places to visit. We encourage hiking in the hills for exploration and exercise. Oh, and great views. Maybe you will find some fossils or some "black rusinga diamonds"

Dont forget we are on a lake so boating of several kinds is available. We offer boat trips for a fee or you can arrange sailing trips with local fishermen. Take a day long tour of mfangano island with our friend and rock art guide George Kakimba.

Wayando Beach Club is your home away from home, kinda like visiting grandmas house in the country. We treat you like family if you like or we give you space to be alone and do your own thing. Do it your way. Kids are welcome And if you happen to have a special needs child feel free to contact us. We have also completed a new handicap accessible Banda with wheelchair ramp etc.

Guest access

Guests can roam around the property, explore the gardens and walk to the lake. They just need to be respectful of the rooms and privacy of other guests.

This place was the perfect place to stay on Lake Victoria. The food was delicious, the lodgings were beautiful, and the lodge was right on the shore of Lake Victoria. The staff was very friendly, and one of the groundskeepers even took me on a hike from which I could see all over the island, I would definitely recommend it for the best view of Lake Victoria. Linda was also a fantastic host and did whatever she could to make me feel comfortable and welcome; she's also lived a very fun and interesting life and very easy and fun to talk to. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to spend a relaxing couple of nights on Lake Victoria.

There's lots to say about this ace eco accommodation, but the first thing that springs to mind is 'the food is wow' ...the chef knows how to cook & gives amazing value for money in copious amounts of good quality varied western and local food. The accommodation is pretty, relaxing and all you need to wind down. Every room has a library of books and cold filtered drinking water is free at all times. I highly recommend the boat trip to Ngodhe Island and try to explore Rusinga whilst you're there. Linda is also a lovely host and so easy to chat to. The rooms are cleaned daily, the views are beautiful and all staff are lovely. The large gardens are full of hammocks and there's a chilled out artistic bar you can sit in and enjoy a tusker or two. Wayando is a quiet little paradise full of birds and fruit trees with a little beach that has stunning views of the lake. Noone should miss out on Wayando if thinking of staying on Rusinga Island. I highly recommend this place and would definitely stay there again. Thank you Linda :)

We really enjoyed our stay at the lodge. The scenery is beautiful, set right next to the lake. We went on a hike and boat ride, both well worth it to see the views, locals and wildlife. Food was great, more than enough to eat and very tasty. Fish sourced locally from the lake. Everything reasonably priced. If you have any concerns about the compost toilets don't worry. They're absolutely fine. A really good, simple, environment friendly to dispose of waste. We honestly had such a relaxing time we were almost moving backwards. Their dog is also super friendly, he'll play or leave you alone whatever your preference. We played a lot. The whole staffing team were very accommodating and lovely. Heard some great stories and local knowledge. Highly recommended. We'll be back soon!

It is difficult to describe the experience of staying at Linda's place! Like visiting family you didn't know you had in a place you had never been is the best I can come up with. From the smiling faces of everyone on arrival to the final wave goodbye everything was fantastic. The small cottages are perfect for a few nights relaxing by the lake, comfortable, well designed and very clean. The peaceful gardens and bar area are just what you need after a boat trip around the nearby island or motorcycle tour of Rusinga (both organised by Linda). Linda even guided us on an evening hike up into the nearby hills, pointing out things of interest and meeting plenty of locals. The food for both breakfast and dinner was delicious! Fresh fish, salads, rice, samosas and other dishes at dinner were amazing, as were the accompanying sauces (especially the chilli). Breakfast was fresh coffee and fresh fruits followed by the best banana pancakes I have ever tried! There was the offer of eggs and other things as well, although I can't see why you would bother when you could have the pancakes!! The final thing to say about Linda's place is the people. There is this comfortable friendly feeling that exists there which is quite unique. Are they staff, or friends, or family or a mix of all three? At all times professional and efficient, welcoming and helpful. If I am ever in the area again I would stay there without hesitation and I recommend that you do the same! Wonderful.
