Homey accommodation for my adult family of six for our brief two night stay. All was as expected and presented - yes it got cool at night, but heaters were on hand. Lovely quiet neighborhood with excellent access to National Park. Also close enough for a day road trip to southern coast. It was a special visit for our family and this easy stay was appreciated.
An entire house for your use while exploring volcano national park. It is about 2 miles from the park entrance. The elevation is 4000 feet, so 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Hilo - dress accordingly. It is clean and in a quiet neighborhood. We enjoyed our stay here. My only request is that the king bed in the master bedroom have a firmer mattress. My wife slept OK, but my back was sore and I did not sleep well.
Communication was fast, information from Merlenna was detailed and sufficient. Pictures and description accurately reflect condition of the property. House is in a very quiet location, about 2 miles away from the entrance to Volcano National Park. It is a spacious, well maintained and furnished house. Only one complaint - there are no dressers or night stands in the bedrooms, this is uncomfortable. Kitchen is well stocked, beautiful cabinets, all appliances in working condition. We stayed in February, so it was a little chilly at nights, but provided blankets were adequate. A pack of bottled water (starter kit) was provided upon our arrival. The owner left instructions about the house and promotional materials about local attractions. I read some previous reviews with visitors complaining or commenting on the damp/moisture smell, I did not pick up any of that, house smelled fresh. One should remember, however, this is a very rainy area in general. During our stay we needed to contact the owner about garbage disposal process and location of the laundry services in the Volcano town, we received a response within 1 hour. Overall, we were satisfied with our stay and would recommend this property to travelers on that side of the Big Island.
Lovely position and quiet, but both the inside and outside were rather drab. The kitchen was adequately equipped and the water was hot. The bedrooms had no drawer space which was inconvenient, no bedside tables and no table lamps in fact all the bedrooms contained were beds and a small built in wardrobe. The house was very cold when we arrived and the bed was so damp that we were unable to sleep on the first night. We had to borrow a dehumidifier to put in our bedroom and on two consecutive mornings this was completely full of water. We were not warned that the local tap water was unfit for human consumption and it was only after we had drunk the water for two days that we realised this. Overall we were disappointed with the house and felt it was poor value for money
The house is as described: new, clean, spacious. One BR even has a crib! We didn't need all 3 bedrooms. But it was nice to have room to roam around after a week stay in a hotel room. It is less than 5 minutes away from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance. And less than 10 minutes, an easy drive to the "center" of the town of Volcano where all the restaurants are - there are only a handful but the two we visited were both great. It's winter when we visited (New Year) and it's chilly inside the house (and outside of course). We saw a fireplace but didn't try to use it.
The host provided hand soap and plenty of toilet paper. The kitchen was well stocked with plates, cups, utensils, pots, etc., a coffee maker (with disposable filters) and also dishwashing material. We also found salt and pepper. If you are staying here, remember that this is not a hotel, so pack your own shampoo, conditioner and soap.
As what one of the previous reviewers mentioned: the house smelled a bit "stale" when you first walked in. I believe it is unavoidable due to the climate being damp (at least in the winter?) We opened up the windows (of which there're many - great natural light!) and it didn't bother us.
The biggest disappointment for us was that there's no Wi-Fi even though it is included in the listing. [Because we both had to respond to work emails] It's possible the home owner (different from the host listed) does not realize that cable router is not the same as Wi-Fi router. There was one ethernet cable hanging out of the cable router. We were unable to get to TV to show more than 10 local channels. Not a big issue for us - thought I'd mention it fwiw.
The beds though new were not of the highest quality - the king bed in the master BR was uncomfortably soft. But it might have more to do with personal preference.
The following was, I believe, unique to our trip and chances are you won't encounter it - a big storm hit Big Island while we're in Volcano. Heavy fog affected the whole area. The neighborhood where the house seemed to collect all the fog (we also smelled SO2) - we weren't able to see beyond the hood when we drove back to the house that night. Make sure your GPS works & 100% accurate - we're grateful for Google Maps. And make sure you have flashlights.
Merlenna, was responsive and easy to communicate with. The house was perfect for my family of four as a home base to explore Volcano National Park. I've stayed at Volcano House, which has a beautiful view of Halemaumau caldera, a lot of history, pleasant common spaces and staff, and easy access to many sites. But it is somewhat tired and very expensive. On my return trip with my family, I wanted a comfortable contemporary environment, with a lot of room and privacy (only saw a couple of cars drive by a day). This house looks recently built or remodeled, with newer fixtures and tasteful wood floors, cabinetry and trim. It is a 12 minute drive to Volcano town for groceries/meals and slightly longer to the park entry. In addition to comfort I wanted a place not too far from teh Jaggar observatory, for a night drive to see the Lava glow of Halemaumau. There are other options in Volcano town, but none as contemporary and spacious in this price range. Since I am not looking for an urban stroll to the town center, driving a few minutes to Volcano was a non issue. It was an unusually cool, windy, and rainy, time so we looked for the heater/thermostat and realized that there was none. With some blankets and with the oven on, it was not a big deal.
Very clean and nice house to stay. The location is great, only 6 min to the volcanoes park. We only have two people. The house can actually stay a lot more. Next time we visit the park we will definitely stay here again.
