The space
This cozy one bedroom home was built in 2007 and designed and decorated by us. It has an expansive vaulted ceiling in the living room which creates a feeling of grand well being, and is built of insulated foam blocks filled with concrete, making the R-value as high as 45, so is also snug, cool in summer and warm in winter. There is comfortable and easy to operate monitor heating, and a minisplit for both AC and heating. There are ceiling fans in the bedroom and living /dining areas.
Our house is the yellow clapboard further down the driveway. The two houses are completely private and independent of each other, but are connected by a path if you need to knock on our door to ask a question or need assistance.

Where you’ll be

Burnsville, North Carolina, United States

When you come to Celo, you dwell beneath the highest mountain east of the Mississippi, in all of North America: Mount Mitchell. The South Toe River boasts the highest cleanliness rating in the state for over 20 years. Our little place feels nestled between the two, right near to where Browns Creek joins the South Toe, and within view of many of the taller peaks next to Mt Mitchell, from the field below, and from the cottage in winter when the leaves have fallen.
Some of the highest diversity of plant, mushroom, and salamander species in the world surround us in this area. It is truly a wonder-ful place on earth to explore and enjoy.

I am Heather and this is a photo of our family at the Loreto airport, a couple years ago. We have been doing annual field work in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico for 20 years, on Blue, Humpback, and Fin whales. We host 5 paying guests per week during our field season, who enjoy the beautiful Sea of Cortez and its inhabitants with us.
Our children have largely been home schooled and have travelled each year with us to do this work. We also run the Great Whale Conservancy, a non-profit created to advocate for the safety and health of whales and their oceanic environment, specifically working to prevent ship strikes.

At home I practice bio-intensive gardening, paint prayer shawls and mermaids, love to cook healthy creative meals, practice natural medicine for my family, and love teaching children pertinent skills that will last their whole lives. I am educational director at Great Whale Conservancy.
My husband Michael Fishbach was a high ranking touring professional tennis player for 10 years, and has been a nature photographer, naturalist, and tour guide for over 30 years. For over 28 years years he has been doing field work with whales, and is our dynamic director of Great Whale Conservancy. He has travelled to over 70 countries, many of them multiple times, and is truly a world traveller.
Our two grown children are both photographers and artists. One works with our non profit and on our research team, and the other helps to manage this property. Our 16 year old likes downhill biking, video games and cars, and is enjoying the last years of childhood.
