We arrived during a downpour. Immediately as we walked inside the front door, we see the floor is soaking wet because the ceiling was leaking. Actually, it was leaking in a few other areas as well. The first half hour or so was spent finding bowls to catch the rain and cleaning the floors and walls. The smell. . . Oh the smell! The entire unit wreaked of mold and mildew. Even clothes that we didn't wear smelled. Also, the refrigerator did not work, even though it made a lot of noise. We called Edward, who at first didn't seem very concerned with any of these issues. Then he offered to bring us a mini fridge. He delivered within a few hours, along with a bag of ice. Finally, we could have a cold beverage. Another issue, beyond the hosts' control, were the roosters that kicked off every morning around 4/5:00.
WE are so sorry about your arrival experience at our apartment. The week of your arrival, the weather was unusually stormy with torrential rains, downpours, and heavy winds. We were so concerened with your late night arrival and your success in getting to (and into) the apartment, that we periodically went to the apartment to check it & that you had arrived safely. I personally checked on the apartment around 3pm during the stormy afternoon, & everything was fine. I turned on both exterior & interior lights on for you. Later that evening, I drove by again (and that was around 10:30 pm) & while the studio's guest vehicle was in the driveway, your was not . Both of our cell phones & emails are located on the paperwork that we sent to you & this is specifically to address any issues that may arise; especially one's such as the one's that you experienced. I would have expected a phone call (and/or an email) immediately following your arrival with such problems occurring, as we make ourselves available to our guests 24/7. However, contacting me the next day after 6:00 pm with your concerns & information, all I can offer at that point is get the refrigerator immediately & inspect and repair the roof next morning. This is what I did & you both seemed to be very satisfied & grateful. Apparently, this was not the case, however, but both George & myself would have never know how dissatisfied you were until you posted this review. In most cases we are in touch with our guests throughout their stay with us so that if questions and/or problems arise, we can easily rectify them.
The comfort of our guests is very, very important to us (as you can see from our multiple 5 star reviews). We did everything humanly possible to make you feel at home, & we both extend our condolences that your stay in Hawaii with us what not what you had expected it to be, however, the same was the case for us. We all could not foresee this happening, & once again, we are sorry that it did. This unfortunate, isolated incident with the roof conditions sometimes can not be avoided in the tropical locations that we live in & thankfully, it did not repeat during your stay. We did not hear from you about anything or any other concerns during your stay, so we both felt that your stay (while flawed) was an enjoyable one.
Upon your check out day, we even offered you a late check out time & a future discount if you came back to the Big Island for Vacation. We always plan and prepare our vacation rental(s) to give our guests the most comfortable and smooth, enjoyable stay. We are sorry that yours was not, & the best we can do at this point is offer our sincere apologies.
Ed & George.
I had a lovely break here, intended to heal and revive me from the bustle of inner city living. It did just that. I felt instantly at home. Ed and George went out of their way to ensure everything went smoothly. In that regard they were the perfect hosts, while not intruding on my retreat. I gave up smoking here. The view is outstanding, gorgeous gardens and a rural setting. You need a car to really enjoy the experience, and the satnav really helped as well.
It was a lovely experience. The place is spacious, clean, and comfortable. The hosts give you all the room (personally) you need, but are responsive. I'd easily recommend it.
My stay at the Hale Koa Triplex was exactly what I needed. Great location: quiet, scenic, relaxing, but less than 10 minutes to Honaunau Bay, where I was diving, and not far from Kona.
The house is comfortable and quirky - interesting furniture and good facilities generally. Everything was clean and accessible. Lovely views way out to the Pacific, and surrounded by tropical gardens. I needed quiet time to write, so it was perfect.
Ed dropped in one evening just to check everything was OK, and made it clear that they were available if I needed anything.
I would definitely stay here again! Thanks guys!
This is a rural experience. Easy to stay on mainland time with the chickens to get you up early! We did get used to them over 4 days.
We enjoyed the quieter pace and the funky locale of Capt. Cook. This is not Honolulu or even Kona!
We had the place to ourselves so can't speak to neighbor noise but the unit doesn't really "close" so noisy neighbors could be an issue.
Very lush and green with coffee trees next door. And chickens.
This is definitely a cottage/cabin as we say back east- with a more rustic finish, but the decor was thoughtful and plenty of kit and caboodle. Very clean!
Location is OK - not too bad to get into Kona and certainly a plus when coming home late from volcano park. Traffic is slow.
Bed is a little soft and the atmosphere is indeed cool and dampish.
We really only slept here and were fairly satisfied. It was an interesting experience!
Ed & George are great host! They were always in communication with us before, during, and after our trip! The house was great and had everything we needed for our stay! You can see they work hard at keeping the place updated , eclecticly charming, clean and well appointed!
We loved being away from the busy side of Kona where you get more of the flora and fawna and a more older Hawian feel!
Hale Koa is a wonderful place and we loved it's slower, casual charming pace!
The Fogs at night are extra tropical;-))
We're sorry to have missed meeting our host and one day soon will return to say! Aloha
We received accurate email instructions from our hosts – complete with photos - so found the place easily – but for the next guests please include that bump when coming off the highway! Inside the house there was a folder with house rules and suggestions for local eateries. We were there for 7 days, but did not meet anyone except the chorus of roosters and the scampering geckos. The listing included wifi, TV and laundry facilities as well as a full kitchen and these were present and functional though we did manage to blow more than a fuse using the microwave and dishwasher together. Our hosts, contacted by phone, promptly sent out an electrician to resolve it: much appreciated! The house is off the beaten track, set in farmland with a lovely view, overgrown garden and an orchard below – and by car within 10-15 minutes from great beaches and historic sites. Overall it was functional, if a bit tired and worn.
