The space

The Space:
Our apartment is located in the Castro, one of the famous neighborhoods in the city. The living room gets good natural light and the windows allow you to have a nice view of the city. Our furniture is cozy and guests are welcome to use the kitchen, although we recommend you to try the many amazing restaurants in the neighborhood. If you have leftovers, our dining room accommodates 4 people. After a long day exploring, you can enjoy a shower in our recently renovated/updated bathroom. Sometimes there is a telescope, so you can look at the stars from our window. The bedroom is in the back of the apartment, it is usually less noisy than the rest of the house. We are located one block away from Corona Heights Park, a great place to hike and enjoy stunning views.

The Neighborhood:
The Castro is famous for its sidewalk with rainbows, plenty of bars, cabarets, the Castro Theatre (where you can sometimes sing along to movies!), bakeries, restaurants and good food and entertainment, especially for the gay community. Also, the whether in the Castro is usually better than other parts of the city (sunnier, less fog). You can also walk to the Valencia Corridor, SF's newest "Restaurant Row" with many of the newest and hippest restaurants and bars in the city.

Getting around:
It is easy to get here. The F line starts from the corner of Castro and Market; it's the line with vintage street cars. You can also take the underground, lines K, L, and M. Bus 24 stops right in front of the apartment.

Other things to note:
Please remember that you will be staying in a home, not a hotel. Therefore, we ask that you treat our space with the same respect you would show your own. We travel often and have help managing guest services for our home while we are away.

The entire building is NON-SMOKING. Please do NOT smoke anywhere on the property.

Although the apartment was very clean, the view spectacular, check-in easy and the location good, there were a couple limiting factors of Rob's apartment. First, the bed was extremely uncomfortable. It was lumpy and some of the pillows were of poor quality, which made it difficult to get a good nights rest. Also, there is a fairly pungent odor in the apartment. It may be a building issue rather than an apartment issue though as the apartment itself was very well maintained and clean. Rob used a check-in service called Pillow which made the whole check-in process very easy, but again our experience was a bit tainted by the comfort factor. If you're a deep sleeper and that doesn't matter much to you then this a good apartment.

This was our first time booking an airBnB and it was a great way to start. The apartment was spot on to the photos and descriptions. Just wish we'd been told the chairs in the living room doubled as two twin beds

Be wary of booking this apartment if you can find another place. My wife and I are longtime users of Airbnb. We've loved our experiences since 2012 and this is the first major issue we've come across as guests. Partly it feels not as part-of-the-community to have an apartment managed by Pillow (a property management company) because it felt like we were the product, or a source of income to a host, not a guest. And the noise, bad amenities, plumbing issues, and CO2 alarm issues all made us leave our 2-night stay after only 1 night. Here are the issues: 1. Dangerous entrance due to a light in the hallway which went out: When we arrived in the Airbnb, it was up one flight of dark stairs (the hallway light is not functional) which felt unsafe — not just in the dark-alley kind of way, but because it made it hard to see the steps right outside the front door of the apartment. 2. Clogged sink & noxious smell from drano for the whole night: The only bathroom in the apartment had a sink issue whereby it was clogged immediately, causing us to get in touch with Pillow (the property management company). They sent a plumber to solve the issue, but he was not able to unclog the drain, so poured Drano down the drain to see if that worked. It did not so Pillow had to send a different plumber the next day, meaning the entire night there were noxious odors emanating from the bathroom, which not only is uncomfortable, but potentially hazardous. We had to use the kitchen as our sink to wash up in, which was unpleasant. 3. The Smoke detector beeped for the entirety of the stay: At first we thought that it was just the CO2 detector and that it needed another battery. We bought another battery to replace it (shouldn't have been the first thing we did when entering the apartment) and the problem persisted. We took out the battery entirely, and it still continued to beep. It turned out that it was the separate smoke detector and even though Pillow sent someone to deal with the plumbing issue, they were not able to resolve this highly annoying beeping noise. Needless to say, it was terrible to try to relax or sleep in an apartment with a constant beeping. 4. Had to call the police about noise from neighbors' party at 2am: We called the San Francisco Police Department to try to break up a very noisy and intrusive party that was happening at our upstairs neighbors' place. It sounded like 50+ people, which may be fine until midnight, but with the paper-thin walls of the apartment was just terrible. The police eventually came and cleared the party by 3am. Smaller issues, but issues nonetheless: -there were only small towels that were rough. Hardly bath towels you would give your own guest in your own home. -the 'Extra beds' were chairs in the...

Overall the apartment is a nice size, very clean, and in a great location. The views are fantastic, and it's a very walkable part of The Castro. We don't typically leave negative reviews, but the listing and apartment leave a bit to be desired by way of description and amenities, respectively. The listing misrepresents itself by claiming "two beds." There is one king bed and a set of futon chairs that can be folded out into two twins or pushed together for a full. The futons were uncomfortable enough that we just used the 4inch or so mattresses for a pallet on the floor, which was fine. The couch isn't really large enough to be used for sleeping. The bedding quality is lacking. The pillows are cheap and flat; the sheets are thin and scratchy. There are two blankets in the entire place to use between both "beds." Not a huge deal, but the living room, where the futons are, doesn't have shades for its very large, sun-filled window, which may be a problem for some sleepers. The amenities are bare bones. We had one set of travel-sized toiletries, and the towel quality is okay at best. We ran out of towels despite stretching them with multiple uses. We probably could have asked for more around day 2, however, as this is managed through Pillow. The kitchen doesn't have any extra amenities but there are glasses, plates, bowls and flatware. Overall it's nice apartment; a more accurate listing and upgraded amenities would have made this 5 stars.

I really don't like spending time writing a negative review but this is a Pillow management company managed property and I'd suggest to avoid it if you have any questions for the 'host'. It was frustrating getting clear answers about the bed and bedding situation after getting answered from three different Pillow reps that didn't know anything about the property other than what is in the listing. On the plus side it's a great location, clean, great view, easy access to several restaurants and the Castro District. Check in and access was easy. Two hour limit on street parking. It's a beautiful and roomy flat and kept clean. Probably good for a couple or a business traveler. Basically motel level accommodation. We were a group of 4 and I asked several different ways about the bed situation. The listing said two beds but I saw 2 twin futons in the photos. They insisted that there were only two beds and they suggested that 3 people could sleep on the king bed. After 6 rounds of question and partial to unclear answers, they finally said, on arrival day, yes there is a king bed and 2 futons in the living room. One of the futon frames was broken and not useable to sleep in. When I reported it they just said sorry and didn't offer any remedy. Towels are rough motel level quality. We were given one set of small hotel sized shampoo/soap bottles and a small bar of soap. I mentioned it Pillow and they brought by 3 more packs then next day, went in the apartment when we were gone and dropped them off without asking first. I didn't notice the noise since I'm a deep sleeper but my friend said there was a party going on next door till late. The King bed has two small pillows. There were just the bare bones level of kitchen accessories. Kitchen dated. If you just want a basic place and aren't looking for anything special then this is good choice.
