Interaction with Guests

Most of the time I´m not present in Cabuya, as I live and work in San José. Of course I try to always be availabe via email or phone but please understand if I don´t get back to you right away; due to my work I don´t always have the time to do that.

The Neighborhood

The property is situated in the heart of Cabuya (on the cone end of the Peninsula de Nicoya), a lovely little fishermen village, close to tourist destinations like Montezuma (8km, 15 min. by car), Mal Pais (8km) and Santa Tereza (10km) and some of the most amazing beaches of the country.

In the village you´ll find a little supermarket, a bakery and various delicious restaurants as well as, the Cabuya island and Cabo Blanco National Park just at walking distance. There is a variety of beaches within ten minutes walking distance, some rocky some sandy, all deserted and beautiful.
The neighborhood is really relaxed and quite international. The direct neighbors are all foreigners from diferent parts of the world. Of course you´ll also find tico familys on the same road.
Cabuya is just a small village, so be prepared for a rural atmosphere. You can hear the cows on the pasturelands behind the property, sometimes you´ll have the neighbors chicken crossing the garden (or the neighbors dog) and the howler monkeys get started pretty early in the morning.

Getting around

Parking spaces are available on the property. There´s a local bus between Cabuya and Montezuma that leaves about four times a day. The next busstop is just at the next corner (in front of the bakery). Please ask at the bakery for the current schedule.
Taxis between Cabuya and Montezuma are available for 10$ one way.

  • Laura's home was perfect for our trip. We loved chilling in the hammock every morning and every night. And we loved the town it was located in. Not very touristy at all but very close enough to all the tourist attractions. We really felt like locals! The bakery right down the street had the best breakfasts! And if you go down the road and take a right the first restaurant you see has the best fajitas I have ever had! Back to the home. Air conditioning was perfect for the end of a long, hot day. We loved our stay and would highly recommend staying here!

  • We had a unforgettable stay at Laura's! The lovely cat's and the nice garden was an added touch to Laura's kindness and beutiful presence for us! She've been sharing wonderful tips and beautiful advice about places to go and people to meet and was so nice coming one day with free range eggs and an other with home made rasperry confiture...with the fridge filled with nice stuff! Thanks a thousand from us and all our family members! Kdi and Antoine

  • Laura house in Cabuya was amazing. My girlfriend and I stayed for over 2 months and loved every minute. The house is off the main road with very few cars passing by. The house is close to the market to get supplies and also a wonderful soda across the street that serves tasty local dishes for a great price. We would come back and stay here again! Cabuya is a magical place. Laura was a great host and took care of us when ever we were in need. The internet is fast and reliable. There was nothing bad about this place. Feliz ano Nuevo! Muchas gacias! Pura Vida!

  • Laura and Pilo's place was exactly as advertised. My family and I had a great time during our stay. The house was absolutely beautiful and was perfect for our family of 4. We were far enough away from Montezuma to enjoy our privacy, but close enough to venture there for the day. The restaurants in close proximity to the house were fantastic and the mini super within walking distance allowed us to cook many of our own meals. If you are looking for a non-touristy place to enjoy a vacation or even a mini getaway from the hustle and bustle of San Jose, I would highly recommend this lovely little cottage. We look forward to staying here again in the near future.

  • We had traveled to CR this July and was in need of a place to stay. We had contacted Laura and Pilo before but at the last minute I contacted them again to rent there house in Cabuya. Laura made arrangements with her house keeper to take care of the house so we could rent it. They were so helpful to do this on such a short notice. The house was roomy and clean. Everything was as advertised. Thank you so much Laura and Pilo.

  • The reservation was canceled 80 days before arrival. The glowing reviews of Laura and Pilo’s property (“Casa Kiba”) made it sound very nice. Unfortunately, they never permitted me to find out for myself. After making a reservation in early July for a three month period beginning in January, Laura contacted me half-way through October to inform me that “two weeks” earlier she had decided to rent the private house I reserved months earlier to someone else because a better deal had come along. Instead of the private house I had reserved, she offered to host me in what she described as a shared cabin where I would be required to split a kitchen and bathroom with Pilo and herself. Her eleventh-hour offer came with a smaller price tag, but the alternative shared property did not look nearly as nice as the private property I had previously reserved… this was a “rustic” cabin with a barbed-wire fence next to it. I refused the alternative offer. It was very difficult to find another rental available during the “high season” with the short notice Laura gave me, but I was able to find something else nearby which cost considerably more. Indeed, the very reason I had reserved Laura & Pilo’s place six months early was to avoid this very situation. So, I can’t speak to how nice the property is. It certainly looks lovely. The owners, however, are a different story. Laura & Pilo have made the choice to value money over their own commitments and their fellow human. It is, of course, their prerogative to do so. But before you book with these hosts, be warned: they’ll sell you down the river without hesitation.

  • We fell in love with Cabuya! Laura and Pilo's house was perfect for us. They had everything we needed for our stay. We even had a howler monkey next door and enjoyed our daily visits from Laura and Pilo's cats and dog. We ended up taking surfing lessons from a local and enjoyed the area beaches. The hiking was amazing. We rented a car which gave us a lot of options to explore nearby areas. We want to come back!

  • We had an amazing time in Laura and Pilo's beautiful house. The house is exactly as pictured and is by far the best accommodation available for travelers exploring cabo blanco national park or the nearby party town, montezuma ($10 cab fare, 7km). When we were there, we looked at other hotels we had considered in montezuma and were very, very glad we stayed in cabuya at this rental. For those looking for a more authentic costa rican experience this is it!

The house was a great size for us ( a couple) and we used the extra bedroom to store our backpacks and clothes. The air conditioning in the master bedroom was amazing and made for restful nights sleep. The house had a lot of natural light and It was so nice to have a washer/ dryer and beautiful patio with a hammock to relax or watch the thunderstorms at night. Internet and kitchen appliances (coffee maker, blender , rice cooker) all worked great.

Cabuya itself is a small town, but we found the quality of the small local restaurants even better then many in montezuma and they were much more affordable. We loved going to the bakery at the end of our block- they had the best casados, batidos and gallo pinto we had during our trip!. The grocery store in montezuma had more to choose from, but the two stores in cabuya had enough selection that we cooked most nights. We also loved walking down the road to the beach and buying fresh fish from the fisherman. As compared to montezuma, Cabuya was much cleaner, safer and quieter. However, it may be hard (but still doable) to navigate in cabuya without basic spanish.

Laura and Pilo were outstanding hosts and are such kind and wonderful people. Throughout the whole process they were very responsive and went out of their way to arrange things for us (like taxis and airport pick ups). Pilo lives behind the house ( on the same property) with his family and is always available if anything comes up. We can't thank them enough for a great vacation!

About
I came to Costa Rica from Germany four years ago to study biology. Together with friends and family we put a lot of effort and love in the renovation and furnishings of my house, and garden and we hope you´ll enjoy it too! At the moment I work and live in San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Anyway, I'd love to welcome folks from all around the globe in my lovely little place in Cabuya to hopefully make them fall in love with Costa Rica, like I once did...
