Parrita is the closest town, Palo Seco is the closest beach, both Palo Seco and Parrita are about ½ hour away.
On the off road (19 km) to Casa Altamar, at Las Vagas, a village on the way (15 minutes) you will find a Soda (restaurant) and a basic grocery store.
There is an other Village near by but everything is very basic and people close early.
At Parrit you will have more selection.
I recommend to get there by car.
Don't forget to bring yor food.
The house is very nice, clean and the view is incredible. Georg is a great host. Great experience. Definitly recommand it!
We loved it!! Thank you Georg and Christian. We had such a great time and really had a chance to relax!!! We made it down the mountain Sun and Tuesday and enjoyed Manuel Antonio and the beach.
We are so glad we had a four wheel drive vehicle. With 5 people in the car not sure a regular car would have made it up the hills. It is a 30-35 minute drive on a 20 mile an hour dirt road which is steep in some places but it is so worth it when you get to this beautiful home! We highly recommend it for folks who want to rest and enjoy the environment. We loved the sunrises and sunsets overlooking the beautiful landscape. Christian speaks some English and is very helpful with things in the area.
I stayed for two days in November 2013 with my family (6 of us, my parents 60+ and 4 kids in their 20s). Everything was wonderful. There was a ton of space. My parents took the master bedroom and each of us had our own bedroom. The open layout is really nice, great for socializing. The house was immaculately clean. The pool and the grounds were great (however, I think the pool was smaller than it looked in the photos). Great experience. Would love to stay here again. If you stay here, definitely to go to the waterfall; it's incredible.
Both Georg the owner and Christian the groundskeeper were extremely helpful. We got lost on the way (forgot to print out directions before we left...) and had to call Georg, who gave us perfect directions from where we were. Christian took us around the grounds, helped us with the horse for rides, guided us to the waterfall nearby, and even went with us into town to get food.
One word of warning: this place is more remote than we realized. This had its advantages, as it was very quiet, peaceful, and relaxed and had a great view, but you should make sure to have printed directions or precise coordinates for a GPS before you set out to make sure you don't get lost.
Preparation: You must have a 4 x 4 vehicle, dirt bike or other off-road vehicle, full tank of gas, and devote 100% of your attention to the road, because chances are, you're an urbanite and probably not experienced in driving in these conditions. All items you wish to enjoy and need during your stay should be purchased prior to committing to the dirt road. Parrita (15 min.) has a large grocery store, gas station, shops and restaurants, while Playa Jaco (45 min.) offers greater variety in all aspects, nuff said.
Directions & Location: Approx. 35-45 min. drive from Highway/Road 34 to the property, visitors earn their stay by their ability to navigate through the terrain. Arrive during the day, preferably while it's not raining, to enjoy the scenic drive (small villages, rivers, waterfalls, farms) but most importantly, familiarize yourself with the route (potholes, gravel, large stones, bends, cliffs, high/low slopes, sudden weather changes) and landmarks.
House and Property: The architecture, cleanliness and ready-to-live-in-state will satisfy everyone. Renovated bathrooms, hot water, natural lighting, multiple balconies/bedrooms/windows/kitchen appliances & supplies, hot tub, the list of amenities is long and of quality! Multiple seating areas await guests outdoors, as does a hammock, barbecue, infinity pool, lush garden and farm amid breath-taking sights and sounds.
Host: Great communication as he always responded to questions thoroughly and in a timely manner. His assistant, Cristian, was a very kind, genuine gentleman, whose hospitality was greatly appreciated.
Personal Favorites: The drive up and down the mountain is exhilarating! Your senses are engaged and want to explore. You pullover to take in the moment, view, experience, and think, "this is unbelievable." Dozens of butterflies mud-puddling in the roadway, while Blue Morphos flutter above. The many waterfalls along the mountain are accessible, spectacular and begging for you to capture them how you see fit.
The "viewing bench" and rocking chair (preferably the second floor balcony) proved to be my favorite outdoor seats. The bench sits on top of a hill and provides an unobstructed view down below and of the Pacific Ocean, while the latter displays an ever-changing view of a cloud forest.
Dawn and dusk are the times to explore. A large tree just outside the property boasts dozens of hummingbirds daily, while the other-side of the mountain proves to have even less human impact, sporting vistas of lush, dark green mountains immersed in clouds and rain. Birds sing to each other from every corner of the house while black butterflies emerge from the surrounding dense vegetation resembling huge swaths of insects. Every window constantly displays butterflies fluttering! As night falls, the steady cries of frogs fill the air while moths, birds, bats and spiders dominate nightfall.
I miss the cool weather, fresh home-cooked meals in the outdoors, the tranquility and peace of Casa Altamar, and the fact that no two days are the same in this magical corner of the world. I'll even miss the polar dip and can't wait to return! So what are you waiting for?!
