We are an artists' colony, with a stately 17-foot granite monolith in the front yard, and we also have vacancies for non-artist rentals. See videos at (website hidden) and (website hidden). We have two cabins, rented separately or together. One is a 12-by-12 A-frame with sleeping loft; the other is 13-by-13 with upstairs bedroom. We're located next to tons of undeveloped forest with miles of walking trails. We are 12 miles from Montpelier and 2 miles from a great swimming pond. Renters also have use of Internet, kitchen and bathroom in the main house (less than 300 feet away). In the cabins there's electricity (fridge, heat, air conditioning), but no plumbing; there is a chemical toilet in one, a commode in the other. Each cabin is $65/night or $225/week. Tall Rock Retreat is pet-friendly.
Guests have full access to the kitchen, bathroom and WIFI at the main house, up a short pathway from the cabins.
The "neighborhood" is very rural, with a few houses and hundreds of acres of undeveloped forest in all directions. Also, there is a gorgeous pond for swimming just 2 miles from our door. If you're looking for town amenities, the state capital of Montpelier is only 12 miles away, with restaurants, bookstores, and an excellent food co-op.
Perfect spot in the hills to enjoy Autumn in Vermont! Cabins are very clean/comfortable. They are a perfect mix of camping but with creature comforts (nice bed, fridge, couch, desk, electricity). Chris was a gracious host and made sure we had everything we needed. We definitely hope to visit Tall Rock again!
We fully enjoyed our stay at Chris's gorgeous forest retreat. It was a change of pace from the typical VT camping experience and we had a lot of fun. Chris was kind enough to allow us use of the main house's bathroom, shower (huge tub!), and kitchen. If you get a chance - ask Chris about his writing - he's a very interesting guy!
The property is laid out very well and the cabin is spacious - gorgeous - and comfortable. The bed arrangement was two single beds which we rearranged to place next to each other to make one large bed. We had a great time.
If you visit be sure to check out Moss Glen Falls and Bingham Falls - amazing places!
The Tall Rock Retreat cabin was a nice little rustic getaway, and feels quite remote, though only 20 minutes from downtown Montpelier. It would be a nice long weekend getaway if you're looking for a bare bones experience (the cabin we stayed in had one room with a table, couch, and fridge, with a loft contains a rocker and two twin beds above, all very clean). Wish we had planned to stay more than one night so we had had the chance to explore some if the surrounding forest! We would come back- though we might leave our Prius at home next time.... The road out and driveway was a bit more rugged than our little car! If you're game for the adventure though, it's worth the stay!
Looking to unplug? This is the place. Nestled among the trees, this cabin is the perfect Vermont escape. It was the exact rustic experience that we were looking for. The cabin was clean and the beds comfortable. It's the Thoreau-like simplicity we were searching for. Chris, the owner, is a generous and accommodating host. In fact, one of the highlights of our trip was sitting around a campfire, under the shooting stars with Chris and another cabin dweller, Evelyn. We definitely will be back. One of the best vacations we have ever taken.
