Description

The space

Small bedroom (single occupancy only) with modern bathroom and access to a friendly family kitchen. The room is located in a beautifully restored old Newari House. A good value for money and the chance of living in Prakash and Premila’s place in the old Patan!

!! Relatively low ceilings . If you are tall you may not want to book here for a long period !!

Please note that the room is located next to the family/ shared kitchen: wonderful for a lively experience and to get to meet your hosts and other guests but be aware that it is not the quietest room of our listings.

Guest access

• Access to the family kitchen/ living room
• Roof terrace with comfortable sitting space
• Electricity backup for all-day power supply
• Hot water 24h and pressure pump
• Free WIFI
• Free set of towels and linens changed every week
• Cleaning 2 times/ week

Interaction with guests

Prakash and Pramila welcome you with all their heart, their generosity and their sense of hospitality.
They will be happy to help you out with good advices and share their Newari culture with you.
Luckily, Premila is also the best cook in town. You can book a Nepali Dal Bhat (Nepali Set) for dinner or even organise a Newari feast on the roof terrace!

You can also have the chance to try home-made "Raksi", the local rice/ millet alcohol: Prakash's mum is a super specialist of the distillation process and produce one of the best Raksi of the area ;-)

The neighborhood

The Old Patan is a fantastic area to stay in. It is much more authentic and traditional than the tourist-spoiled places of Kathmandu and its concrete jungle. There are many hidden treasures to discover: hindu temples, Buddhist stupas, courtyard, secret paths, monasteries, local food spots...

The vibrant local life of the Newars (the original ethnic group of the Kathmandu Valley) guarantees you a very rich cultural experience.

Getting around

There are two big public bus stations around (10 min walk away from us): Lagankel and Patan Doka.
From there you can go down to Kathmandu Ratna Park and to many places and villages around.

As a general fact, we discourage our guests to be systematically brought back by taxi or car until our front door (beside the first day of course). The old Patan is a very fragile area and cannot handle too much traffic and pollution.
Ask the taxi to drop you in Mangal Bazar or in Patan Doka and have a walk in all those beautiful small alleys and courtyards to reach our house, it is much healthier and enjoyable for all ;-)

Other things to note

Gas, water and electricity are very precious ressources here in Nepal, please use them very conscientiously. Small problems related to those ressources can always happen, we are reactive to fix things once informed but you need to be aware that Nepal is a country where you have to be adaptable ;-)

The soundproofing in old Newari House is not the most efficient, be aware that the house can be noisy.

House Rules
Not suitable for pets
No parties or events
Check in is anytime after 2PM

The house is very lively: there is nothing expected beside your good humour and a minimum sense of respect for your hosts and the other tenants. We also encourage our guests to smoke on the roof terrace rather than in the rooms.

Please smoke on the balcony and/or roof terrace but not inside the room; thanks;)

Please note that we do NOT welcome any type of sex tourists.

I liked this place. It was very conveniently located between Patan Gate where you go to get a taxi and Durbar Square. They were helpful with local suggestions and will provide a delicious breakfast upon request.

I had a fantastic stay in Patan thanks to Prakash, Pramila, Simba and Ami, who were such lovely, kind hosts. They made me feel much at home. Patan is a great base for Kathmandu valley for a local feel. I stayed during spring, the room just gets a bit cold in the evening as it is a traditional house with insulation that keeps the rooms cool, but there are blankets to keep one warm.

Namaste! Thanks for this amazing stay in Nepal. After the busy streets in Kathmandu, this stay with the lovely family was a great experience. They were open to help, share some amazing local food and nice chats in the living room! Till next time!!

I had an amazing and unique stay here. This place is run as serious business so you can communicate with people there smoothly. (you should check their website as well.) My room was cleaned everyday, too. If you are not tall and do not really need sun light in the room, this place is for you! The building is historical, therefore, old, but the bathroom is renovated! It gets very dark outside at night, but I guess that's same if you stay in other places in Kathmandu.

I had the most wonderful stay with Prakash and Pramila. My room was spotless and comfortable in a beautifully restored 100 yr old Newari house. The prior week I had been teaching and was housed at a large Western chain hotel. I like this so much better, feeling like I am getting a true sense of Nepal, plus a delicious breakfast that is much healthier than what the Western hotel offered. The Patan location is fascinating and much less polluted than the air in Kathmandu city, yet close by for sightseeing. I cannot recommend higher--it has been a fantastic stay.

Camille, Sailesh & Co User ProfileCamille, Sailesh & Co is a superhost.

French travel enthousiast - I have lived in many country including Russia, Spain, Sweden, USA and now Nepal. Today my pleasure is to introduce people to unspoilt places of the Kathmandu Valley, especially the Old Patan where I live.
Very fond of old wood, architecture, animals and nature in general, experimental food and all things a bit curious.
I work with Sailesh, Sohan and Nigen, three delightful Nepali young men, full of energy and very keen in sharing their Newari culture as well as helping guests in any ways to have an amazing stay.
