A 15 min walk to the Mission, views of the Bay, Berkeley hills & Mt. Diablo, near the peak of Bernal Heights. Our cozy, light-filled home built in 1909 has a fireplace, wood floors, deck, Bay views & free all day street parking. 3 rooms, sleeps 5, but note there is only 1 full bathroom & a powder room. We’re in a quiet neighborhood up above the noise & city grit but just a short walk to amazing restaurants, bars, shopping, organic grocery store, & park.

The space

Updated May 2021

We are transitioning from short term to long term rentals & will be updating photos. The house has 3 levels & 2 separate units. We’ve recently repainted the entire house, inside & out & we’ve “Marie Kondo’d” the house so it feels even more zen.

The new garden apartment doesn’t have a listing yet, but it’s at the same location with its own entrance & garden with views of the Bay. One of use will usually be staying in the apartment.

We have implemented a high level of cleaning for our guests with antibacterial cleaners & wipes. We also leave a minimum of 3 days in between guest bookings.

We welcome guests from all walks of life!

Our little house is a funky and creative space, built in 1909. It is not perfect or fancy, but we’ve loved it a long time since 2001. It’s a perfect fit for 4 adults. It can sleep 5, but be sure to note, there is only 1 full bathroom & a powder room.

——-New Apartment ——-

The house has 3 levels. The bottom level is a full apartment with its own entrance. One of us will be staying down there during your stay. We hope to have this rented to full time tenants or on Airbnb at some point.

*The back garden is the private space for the bottom unit. Thank you for respecting the privacy by not going down into the garden.

* Your space is the top 2 floors & the deck.

*There is plenty of free all day street parking on the street.

——More History———
Our daughter grew up here, she was born & raised in San Francisco. & We’ve lived in SF since 1989.

The house was built before there was indoor plumbing. You will discover the creative way the original owners decided to enclose the back porch to add a sink and bathroom. We love these historical features of the house and seeing the bones of the house as well.

Our location is perfect if you like to walk, have a car or if your into taking Lyft’s & Übers.

We’re in a quiet neighborhood on a hill, but close enough to the freeway so you can hop on it in 2 min.

Bernal Heights is a quiet neighborhood village, up out of the grit, noise and bustle, but super close to the heart of the trendy Mission district.

In 15 minutes you can walk to the heart of the Mission District at 24th St. and Harrison where it’s just the beginning of an amazing selection of bars, restaurants, shops & cafés.

It’s a 15 minute drive to downtown, without traffic.

BART (the metro) is a 20 minute walk.

Moscone Center: We are 2.5 miles from the Moscone center. If your taking an Uber or Lyft car it’s about a 15-20 minute drive depending on traffic.

If you walk or take a bus to BART (the underground train) it’s about a 30- 40 min commute.

We are on a hill, so if people aren’t into walking I usually say walk or bus to BART. & take a Lyft home at night.

Nothing is far, San Francisco is only 7x7 miles.

We love being on the hill with the views of the Bay & Berkeley Hills.

The narrow streets, hidden stairways and parks make our neighborhood feel like a village rather than part of a big city.

It's a lovely quiet neighborhood that most people don't even know exists in San Francisco.

The top of Bernal Hill is only a 5 minute walk & from there you have an incredible 360 view of the city and the Bay.

There is a good hill to walk up to the house from Cesar Chavez St. Our daughter has been doing it since she was 5, but if your not a walker, getting around with a car, electric bike or Lyft ride might be best for you.

We have registered our Airbnb rental with the city of San Francisco and are very happy to be #255. Our daughter went to public school in SF & with the taxes that are collected you are helping to support public programs in SF.

Listed in November 2013, we are veteran hosts; see our references from previous guests and the magazine and book credits!

Follow our Instagram page or tag your own photos @ TheFrenchVictorian. We also post about what to do and where to eat in the city on our page or search # WhereToInSF.
See discounts for stays over 5 weeks.

We also rent the house for photo and movie shoots contact us for more info.

Check out the 'Guidebook' to see all of the great food and places to go that are near the house.

The house has been rented for several commercials and photo shoots: Victoria’s Secret, Pottery Barn, L’Art De Voyager Magazine, Red Bubble, Home and Garden Magazine, Family Spaces Book, San Francisco Kitchens Book, San Francisco Magazine, Romantic Country Magazine, Zakka, Eclat and Croissant (Japanese Magazines) & Spell Clothing Company from Australia.

We are accustomed to having people in our home and we love meeting all the new people that come through.

Situated just below the peak of Bernal Heights, this 1,200 sq. ft. ‘fully detached’, cozy, light-filled house is the perfect accommodation for a single person looking for a retreat, a couple needing a romantic get away or a family looking for a place to call home while in San Francisco.

The house is filled with French & American antiques, original art, art books, magazines and there are several spaces indoors and out to relax, read, be inspired or just soak up the sun.

Enjoy complete privacy, peace, quiet and great views while being only minutes away from the best restaurants, shops & culture in the bustling Mission District and Valencia Corridor.

Nothing is far away in San Francisco since it is only 7x7 miles.

With the 80, 101 and 280 freeways just at the bottom of the hill we are only a 2-minute drive to hop on the freeways to get anywhere and it’s incredibly easy to find the house.

(Bernal Hill)

Voted 'Hottest Neighborhood' in the U.S. for 2014!

The neighborhood has a real progressive community feel to it and is more like a village.

Here you get to feel what a real and livable San Francisco neighborhood feels like, you’ll become a local soon enough!

It’s just to the left of the heart of the city with small winding one-lane streets, where the neighbors wave at each other as they share the road. Its a part of San Francisco most people don’t get to experience, or even know exists.

There are secret hidden hillside stairways, slides and mini playgrounds that lead you up to Bernal Hill where you can get a 360-degree view of the city. We make the 10-minute walk up to the peak almost every day!

All of the cafes in the neighborhood are kid friendly and there are 2 restaurants, a small organic grocery store, a laundromat, a park and a playground within a 5-10 minute walk to the bottom of the hill.

(Cortland Street)
A short 5 minute drive or 30 min walk to Cortland Ave. takes you to ‘The Good Life Grocery Store” and Zagat-rated restaurants, several cafe's, bakeries, butcher, book store, yoga studio, Library, bank and a variety of charming, locally-owned businesses.

There's even an electric-bike shop where you can rent a motorized bicycle to help with the hills....

The Alemany farmers market on Saturdays and the flea market on Sundays is also only a 5 minute drive or 30-40 minute walk away (with hills).

We are only a 15-20 minute walk to the heart of the Mission district at 24th & Harrison St. Where the best ice cream awaits you. On the corner is ‘Humphrey Slocomb Creamery’ where you can get bacon, beet or salted caramel Ice Cream.

There are also an abundance of taquerias, hip restaurants cafes and Mexican bakeries.

The trendy Valencia corridor is only a 20-25 minute walk from the house and is where you can shop, eat, drink, hear live music and dance the night away to your hearts desire.

We are 15-20 minutes from the San Francisco International Airport (without traffic)and at the Cesar Chavez exit.

A big plus is we are usually the first to be dropped off by the Airport Shuttles when you arrive and the last to be picked-up when you need to get back to the airport.

the 3 Freeways run right by the house and you can hop on them in less than 2 minutes.

San Francisco is a small city and the greatest way to appreciate it is on foot or bike!

You can rent electric bikes close to the house on Cortland St.. or Ford bikes are at the bottom of the hill.

We will also have maps and a booklet with things to do in San Francisco including day trips and longer trip ideas for when you arrive. Just ask and I can email this information to you before you arrive so you can plan your trip.

(BART to other Neighborhoods)
24th Street Bart is also just a 20-25 minute walk or catch a bus or uber on Cesar Chavez Street and it’s only minutes away.

A short walk and BART ride gets you to other great parts of the city (door to door 45-60 minutes) including the convention centers, Union Square, the Embarcadero, Chinatown, North Beach, Hayes Valley, Downtown, the Ferry building and more.

A great option instead of a cab is to download the 'Uber' or 'Lyft' app onto your phone and use them, they are cheaper, pre paid and it's a lot more fun being a part of the new 'share' economy! Shared bicycles & scooters are also options. Ford bikes are just down the hill & you can pay with a clipper card. More details will be sent about all of these options when you book.

Also 'getupandgo' will rent you a car for a few hours or a day another great 'sharing' concept!

Our neighborhood has the best weather in the entire city!

When they say San Francisco is a foggy city they are talking about everything west of twin peaks. Twin peaks blocks the oceans fog and wind from getting to our neighborhood, so it's usually sunny at our house!

San Francisco is filled with mini microclimates so dress in layers. It can be drizzly cold and foggy in the Haight Ashbury, but you could be in a swimsuit in our back yard where the wind and fog won’t reach you.

The best time to get warm sunny beach weather in all parts of the city and beyond is during our

August, September, October, November.

MARCH - also tends to give us warm sultry nights where every one will drop everything to eat outside anywhere they can.

If you would like the house cleaned during your stay, let us know & we can recommend people. You'll pay directly to your cleaning person.

If you need any help with something in the house we have a handy man who lives next door that has worked on the house and his number will be provided should you need it.

We are only a 15-20 minute uber or shuttle ride from the SFO Airport & very easy to find!

The 101 & 280 Freeways are a 2 min drive from the house, just at the bottom of the hill, making it convenient to get anywhere.

A 15-20 Minute walk to BART,
or 10 minute walk to a bus on 24th St. or Mission St. will also get you to BART.

You can also easily call an Uber or Lyft car or catch a cab on Cesar Chavez St. which is less than a 5 minute walk.

Having our house on Airbnb is helping us with our daughters college fund. She graduated from High School in 2019 & has taken a gap year before deciding on a university & country that she wants to go to school in. Renting our home also funded a new garden apartment that will be for a long term tenant. Airbnb also helped fund 'Tartlet Bar', a food business Wendy had with her families farm. We own the house together, but split our time there with Lita our daughter. We co-parent & raise our daughter in what’s called a “nesting” situation. One of us are usually in town & available if you need anything. We have lived in San Francisco since 1989, we get out of the city as much as possible, but always seem to return. Wendy is a creative consultant & avid paddle boarder. She speaks French, English & understands Spanish. One of her passions is to see the world and study different cultures, which she has done extensively (she wants to be an anthropologist when she grows up ;.). (Website hidden by Airbnb) We believe the world is Lita's education, with 3 languages and several countries already under her belt she is a gypsy at heart. She’s fluent in French, Spanish & English, & is teaching herself Japanese. She took 2019/2020 to explore Europe & work in Japan before she attends a University. Fred is French, fluent in French, English & Spanish, a photographer, entrepreneur, surfer, world traveler and owns two small business in SF; Dalva (a bar in the mission district) and Grenouille-French Vintage Antiques. We're also doing Airbnb because we like the idea of meeting like minded travelers, people who seek adventure, people who believe we can learn from everyone we meet and enjoy absorbing other cultures as much as we do. Is it possible to be part of a community while being a gypsy and a nomad? So far it's working out to be yes...
