About this listing
Ballaghmore Castle is a unique and beautiful place. Set in the Irish midlands in Co. Laois, it is the perfect setting for a relaxing rural break in picturesque and historic surroundings.
Situated in beautiful country side, with its renowned fishing, shooting, riding, hunting, hill walking, mountain climbing and golf.
Ballaghmore Castle offers its guests a wonderful setting for their stay. In a world of generic hotel rooms, the accommodation offered at Ballaghmore is truly unique. Each room has its own charm, from the gothic arches, timber beams, exposed stone, and heavy wooden doors.
Ballaghmore Castle can be rented weekly or weekends, for private parties, weddings etc. Self-catering or staffed.
Accommodation is also offered in the 16th Century Manor Guest House on the grounds.
Set in 30 acres - Ballaghmore Castle provides privacy and peace.
Situated between Roscrea and Borris-on-Ossory, Ballaghmore Castle was built in 1480 by the Gaelic Chieftain MacGiollaphadraig (now called Fitzpatrick), meaning son of the servant of Patrick. Lords of Upper Ossory. They defended North Munster, strategically placed as they were on the old Irish Road. A Sheela-na-Gig carved in stone is on the front facing wall, a pagan fertility symbol to ward off evil.
Gráinne (Grace) will delight you with stories of the history of the MacGiollaphadraigs (changed to Fitzpatrick by order of Henry 8th of England) which goes back to 500 B.C.

The castle is just as it seems in the photos - a large banquet hall on the first floor with everything you need host great dinners and two dorm rooms above, each with about 8 beds. There are a few private rooms in the dorms but for the most part it is dorm style (though the beds are all comfy). On the top floor is a large great hall. The adjacent manor house, which we also rented, has 2 beautiful queen/king size beds and 2 smaller bedrooms as well. For 22 of us, it was a great place to be based for a week in Ireland.
Grant, the manager, could not have been a more gracious, helpful host. He was quick to assist us with everything we needed and made us feel extraordinarily welcome. The castle owner, Grace, was a mostly-delightful woman, though she had a habit of checking in on us constantly and occasionally being quite rude to some of our guests. That being said, she has a great deal of knowledge about the region and is eager to make her guests feel accommodated) most of the time. The real drawback is the bathroom facilities - for 16 people in the castle who are paying a decent rate, it's pretty inexcusable (even in a castle) to have such lousy showers, no real pressure and hardly warm. We recognize that we didn't sign up for a luxury holiday, but if the WCs could be upgraded, then I think Ballaghmore could be a really excellent destination.
As it stands, we had an excellent time and especially are thankful to Grant for looking after us. If you're going in the winter, dress warmly!
Myself, my family and my friends all had the best stay with Grace at Ballaghmore. We couldn't have asked for a more special place to celebrate my partner's 30th. Grace was so helpful, and when we finally saw the castle it was beyond our expectations. It's a truly special place. Perfect for big groups like ours and special occasions, or just for a unique holiday. Everything we needed was provided, and Grace was a pleasure to deal with. Thankyou!
