Sunny, private room with shared bath and a great ocean view to the south coast. Casa de Kathy is in Esperanza, 6 minutes walking to beaches, restaurants, Bioluminescent Bay tours, shops, grocery stores and a bakery. See us on Trip Advisor.

The Space

The room has a queen and twin bed, dresser, and closet. It receives good breezes and there is also a ceiling fan for added ventilation. Modern bathroom and kitchen are shared with the owner, Kathy. Wi-Fi available.

Outside your room is a large balcony where you can relax and read, have meals or just swing in the hammock and watch the sun set over the mountains. The house is located on a quiet, residential street.

This room in Kathy's apartment is one of three apartments in the building. The other two apartments are rented to tourists as the "Casa de Kathy" guesthouse. This guesthouse has high ratings on Trip Advisor. See the other "Casa de Kathy" listings if you want a private apartment.

Since the bathroom is SHARED with the owner, Kathy, this room best accommodates SINGLE TRAVELERS. It can also be comfortable for two people, if this arrangement suits you.

There is also a dog and a cat, both very mellow, who share this apartment but do not have access to the private room.
Some amenities include snorkeling equipment, beach towels, beach chairs and coolers.

Vieques is a beautiful tropical island, 20 miles long and 4 miles wide, known for its pristine, sparsely populated beaches which attracts thousands of tourists each year. Vieques has been voted the Best Island in the Caribbean by the Travel and Leisure magazine.

There are many good beaches within walking distance including Esperanza Beach (7 minutes walking), Sun Bay, Media Luna & Navio (between 20 to 60 minutes walking), Coco Beach (5 minutes). Very good snorkelling can be found on Cayo Afuera (Outside Key) right off Esperanza beach.

In addition to the these beaches, taxis are available for visiting the Fish and Wildlife Refuge beaches. At Refuge beaches, you will find excellent snorkelling, especially at Playa Caracas (Red Beach) and at Playa La Chiva (Blue Beach). You need a car or bike to get to these beaches. Taxis to Red Beach: $30 for two people. Bikes for rent on the premises.

One of Vieques’ most famous and enjoyable attractions is the “Bio-Bay”. It is best experienced with little or no moon. There is one “electric boat tour” which is operated by Island Adventures. With the kayak tours, you paddle your kayaks out a short distance from the shore and see the fish light up as they swim past.

You may also arrange a horseback-riding tour with Esperanza Riding Company. I can also recommend a trip to the Conde Mirasol Fort & Museum and the Punta Mula Lighthouse in Isabel II and to the Puerto Ferro archaeological site north of the entrance to Sun Bay. In the west, visit the 375 year old ceiba tree, Mosquito pier, the ecumenical chapel & Laguna Kiani.

There area several good restaurants and bars on the boardwalk and street vendors on the weekends. On weekends, there is often live music at one or two places,

I have lots of tourist information and will gladly help you make the best out of your visit to beautiful Vieques. If I am going to the beach or the store, you can accompany me. At Casa de Kathy, Mi Casa es Tu Casa (My home is your home).

Quiet, residential neighborhood with lots of trees and flowers. Horses roam the streets. You can walk safely to the waterfront where you will find beaches, restaurants, shops and the pick up for the biobay tours.

Plenty of taxis and public vans to take you to the ferry or to the beaches for a reasonable cost. Only $30 rount trip to Red beach for two passengers - beats renting a car for $80 per day.

  • My only regret about my stay at Casa de Kathy is that it was too short! I had such a marvelous time! Kathy is an ideal host. She responds to emails very quickly and clearly. Her home is lovely, peaceful, and clean. She has a lot of information to share about Vieques. The location is good - just a few blocks off the Malecon so it's a quick walk, but far enough to be quiet. She has snorkel equipment, bicycles, and a fantastic veranda with a hammock that I wish I had more time to relax in. She helped me to arrange the biobay tour and taxis to get to a beach and the airport. Kathy is a very interesting and kind person and I wish I had more time to hear more in-depth about her human rights work. Thanks for everything Kathy!

Thanks, Ellen. I was also very interested in your volunteer work around the world. You will definitely have to return for another visit.

  • Kathy was an amazing host! I had such a wonderful time in Vieques and her place is just great: stunning view, beautiful house, very clean and charming, lovely pets. But most of all Kathy was so helpful, she explained where to go, which places to see and what tours to take, she organized the tours for me, even took me to the blue beach one day and invited me to join a dinner she prepared for friends. She has travelled a lot and knows a lot about Vieques. We had great conversations - thanks for that Kathy :) My stay couldn't have been better! If you are going to Vieques, you should definitively stay at Kathy's place!

  • Staying at Casa the Kathy has been a great decision. I would totally recommend it if you're traveling solo like me. The bed is very comfortable, and the room and the house is very clean. Very quiet neighborhood too. She has an apartment downstairs if you're more than one or two. The house is walking distance from the malecon in Esperanza where you can find all the restaurants, tours and moto/kayak rentals (about 10 min). Same distance to the beach in Esperanza and about 20min walk to Sun Bay, 30 to Media (website hidden) beach is close too. For other beaches you'll need to take a taxi or rent a jeep.
Kathy (email hidden), very kind and responsible of her guests. She has ready at your arrival a guide, maps and information about Vieques. She'll answer any questions and will recommend you the best spots of each beach. It is a big plus that you don't need to carry extra weight in your luggage because she has beach and bath towels, shampoo, soap, sunscreen, snorkeling kit, etc. I have add that I had very nice breakfast and night talks with her, which made my stay more interesting and personal than just renting a room.
    Thanks Kathy!

  • We had a great stay at Casa de Kathy! The room was clean and well-appointed, and Kathy was extremely helpful--she provided great advice to help us enjoy Vieques through both print materials in the room and in-person advice. We would definitely stay with her again!

  • Kathy was a kind, gracious and extremely helpful host. She gave us in-depth advice about snorkeling, beaches, taxi rides, the ferries, and island history and politics. Breakfast was healthful and delicious and her pets are very sweet and polite. We didn't spend a lot of time at the house, but the room was comfortable and clean, and the shared bathroom was always sparkling. The neighborhood is residential but has the usual Vieques circus of dogs and roosters so I'd recommend earplugs. We loved being so close to the Malecon, and with a great foundation of knowledge for exploring each day. She even rented us snorkel gear! Thanks Kathy!

  • Kathy (email hidden)e room, situated next to the balcony, was perfect for resting and getting ready to go explore the island. She would always offer helpful and friendly advice for ways around the island and delicious food spots.

On the first evening after arriving on the island, Kathy invited me to join her and a neighbor to a nearby beach to walk her dog Lovey. Within minutes we came across a horse and her new born baby and with a light rain in the air a rainbow shot across the sky. no joke. we all stopped for a moment to take it in, as Lovey ran ahead this beautiful sight lit up our eyes. And thats when I realized this trail, this path wasn't on the maps. And it's because of Kathy that I was a witness to it. She (email hidden) and I was happy to have her wisdom to guide my own expeditions in Vieques.

    Highly Recommended.

    Response from Kathy:

The beach where we saw the the horses and the rainbow is Coco Beach (Playa Cocal) and is located just a ten minute walk from my house. It is a beautiful beach for walking, reading, snorkeling (if the waves are not too big), and seeing sunsets. It was a pleasure to share time with Rene who appreciated the beauty and history of Vieques.

  • Our stay in Casa de Kathy's was great. The location is really perfect, only a nice short walk from the beach and all the bars and restaurants. There is also a bakery and small grocery store a block away.

Kathy was very helpful with information about bio bay, taxis, beaches, snorkeling, and everything else we asked about. Her house is very nice and we were able to cook dinner once, very comfortably. She also lended us a small cooler to take with us for the day when we packed food to go to Blue Beach. She made us breakfasts of eggs, coffee, toast, and fruit each morning which was great. Even though we had the unit in her actual home and therefore were sharing the bathroom and common spaces with Kathy, it was not an issue at all for us as we were only there a couple of nights. If staying longer though, it would probably be nice to have your own space. Still, this was a great experience at a wonderful value. We recommend Casa de Kathy to anyone looking (email hidden) to stay in Esperanza, or in Vieques in general.

  • My boyfriend and I spent a couple day in Kathy's home and it couldn't have been more wonderful. We had a great time in Vieques and her home (email hidden) to relax. Kathy (email hidden) and offered a lot of suggestions for restaurants and activities on the island. Thanks Kathy!

  • Kathy (email hidden)e upgraded us to the private apartment even when we only booked the private room, so we had more space and we did not have to share the apartment. She gave us very helpful information and tips for our stay in Vieques, explaining and answering all the questions. The room and the apartment are very nice, colourful, quiet and clean. She made our stay perfect.
I absolutely recommend casa de Kathy and I hope to come back soon!
