About this listing
We know that families who don't see each other very often find this home very special. A homey space with lots of amenities.
Just 15 minutes from downtown on a quiet residential street with friendly neighbors. You will love your experience here.
Gas fireplace at the flick of a switch (available in fall - spring). Cool artwork from Goodwill's art sale.
Welcome to your beautiful and centrally located vacation home! Until recently, this home was occupied by us, the owners, so we are exceptionally in tune with this home and are constantly updating it to make it even more accommodating for you.
We also treat the management of this property as my full-time job, so if you book this house, you can rest assured that we are just about as responsive an owner as you'll find.
Avoid the crazy parking and noise of Portland and stay just over the border in our residential home. Any easy hop on the freeway to LL Bean, with beaches just 20 minutes away. Two groceries stores are within a mile and virtually any place in Portland is within 20 minutes. We have been told repeatedly by our guests that this vacation home finds itself in an ideal location for a Portland getaway.
Extended families love our house because it's easy to live here. You are also perfect for this home if you are discriminating out-of-town visitors looking for a getaway into Portland, a pair of couples traveling together who enjoy wine and relaxing on the back deck, or a young family with small kids who can't imagine hotel life at the rates they charge. Portland hotels are expensive! Stay here and avoid all the madness. We'll make sure your stay is easy, comfortable, convenient, and, most of all, relaxing. You will love how easy it is to sleep here - it's really quiet, with virtually no traffic.
Your favorite parts of the house will be the outrageously comfy beds, sunny rooms, awesome back deck for morning coffee and evening wine (and entertaining, if you have friends in the area), moderately spacious bathroom with quasi-rain shower head, shiny hardware floors, crown molding, and quiet residential street. You'll also enjoy the Ikea kitchen and bathroom, the teak dining room set, the Crate & Barrel living room couch, and for chilly fall & winter nights, just flick on the gas fireplace and cuddle up. I have put a lot of thought into making this house feel like a home for our guests. And if you like color and thoughtful design touches, this might be your vacation home of choice.
There are 3 bedrooms - 2 with comfy memory foam mattresses, and the 3rd with a comfy futon with egg crate. The 3rd bedroom with the futon is very small and would accommodate a teenager or two small children, but keep in mind that there is only 1 bathroom for you all to share.
We have provided every appliance we can think of: toaster oven, blender, food processor, French press coffee maker (no grinder), water kettle, waffle maker, ice tea maker, large slow cooker, rice cooker, immersion blender, and of course, a fondue set. If you like to cook, you'll enjoy the kitchen and being able to cook dinner and watch the news at the same time; I had a 26' TV/DVD hooked up during the kitchen renos and love this detail.
Enjoy reliable WiFi and a 42' TV with basic TV plus DVD player in the sun room, which is a favorite room in the house. It's a cozy space to relax with family and friends. We've provided many board and card games to enjoy on rainy days.
The crème de la crème is the back yard. You'll love to put your feet up and lounge on the back deck. And don't forget the gas grill for those tasty fall treats (I bet you could even grill lobster) and dining al fresco. If you like flowers, there is a full perennial garden out back. Whatever you choose, the air is fresh, and life is good!
You'll enjoy parking in the driveway and not having to worry about living in the city where street parking is no fun.
You'll love the neighborhood - it's so quiet and the neighbors are very friendly.
As for location, it's just 1/2 mile from the Portland border and two grocery stores. There is a Chipotle and a sushi bar just up the road.
Driving into town is easy - it's a straight shot. Just take one road into town with light traffic and you're there in 15 minutes, tops. There, you'll find Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.
The airport and bus stations are also very close by. About 10 minutes, each, by taxi.
If I've left off any details, please let me know. We have many references (at least 45), as we rent out the house regularly on multiple sites. We are very much looking forward to your stay.
Chris & Mike
Guests have the house to themselves including a well-stocked kitchen with pots, pans, gadgets, utensils, dishes, bowls, baking sheets, supplies like aluminum foil and cling wrap, hand towels, paper towels, dish and dishwasher detergent, cabinet storage space, and all of the aforementioned appliances. It is our second home, so everything we'd need to spend the night and create gorgeous meals is there - even salt and pepper, a few vinegars and oils, and a selection of teas. And tons of vegan cookbooks, if you're so inclined.
We've also provided conveniences like all bed and bath linens, plus extras like shampoo, body lotion, conditioner, tissues, and even a sewing kit for when you need it. It should feel like home.
And on that note, there are visitor guides galore to help you familiarize yourself with the area.
You can take care of all of your laundry while you're here, too.
Arrivals welcome to check in at 2PM, with checkout at 11am.
No smoking, please.
Interaction with Guests
We're always available by text, email or phone anytime you need us! We find that guests find the check-in and out process very easy and that meeting is not necessary. However, we're attentive and want to make sure you have what you need.
The neighborhood is the best!! Everyone is friendly, it's kid friendly, and there is lots of street parking. Only 1/2 mile from the Portland border, it's the best of suburban living.
The bus stop is just at the end of the street and takes you right into downtown Portland. Guests have reported that it's pretty easy, but having a car is definitely an asset if you're planning on doing a bunch of sightseeing.
Other Things to Note
I lived in this house by myself for the last 5 out of 6 years. I turned it into a vacation rental after a month-long trip to California, where renting it was a necessity. While away, the rental requests kept coming at a furious pace, and I kept accepting. Upon returning home, I needed a place to live, so Mike & I purchased a small condo! Turning my home into a vacation rental has been the most fun. Upgrades are continual and my attention never waivers from making my home a home for you.
This property has been completely renovated over the last 6 years including new siding, bathroom, kitchen, lighting, paint, decks, and landscaping. Our lifestyle approach is very much a sustainable one, with chemical use at a minimum, recycled products at a maximum, and the overall tone of our house being one of European design.
Pets are considered - please inquire - for an extra fee. There is no smoking on the property.
About the Host, Chris
Mike & I are both Mainahs! Mike is from Peaks Island and I'm from Cape Elizabeth, so living near the water is in our blood. Mike is a 3-generation woodworker turned private yacht captain and I'm a reformed chef, and we both love travel!
Mike is a grandfather and father of two grown girls, and I'm a lifelong bachelorette. Together, we have a great time dancing (how we met), singing karaoke, gardening, traveling, and cooking. We love to entertain and also to spend quiet evenings cuddled on the couch. Your comfort is important to us, and we live locally to assist you in making sure you are taking care of.
