About this listing
A quiet guest room with door to a wooded area. Blind up, you might see deer. Blind down, privacy and peaceful sleep.
Just for you: a pretty and clean private room with a double bed in a house surrounded by cedars on a 1 acre lot. You can control the heat in your room with a thermostat and a screened window can be opened for air. Two guest robes are provided and there is an empty chest of drawers for your things.
Your are also invited to make full use of the comfortable living room, kitchen, bathroom and deck. You will be just 5 minutes from the best beach on Salt Spring Island. This is east-facing Beddis Beach, a tranquil spot. A few steps away from the beach is a private apple orchard and you may sit in the gazebo there and enjoy the sight of deer in this serene spot.
Also nearby on Beddis Road is Moonstruck Cheese, a farm where gentle Jersey cows are cared for by the ladies and helpers who make the wonderful cheeses.
Beddis Road is also designated for cyclists. It winds along for 5 Km. There is no public transit on this road near A Country House in a Woodland. On Salt Spring there is a small community bus that travels on the main road of Fulford-Ganges Road and meets many of the ferries at our 3 ferry docks. The closest public transit stop is at the corner of Fulford-Ganges Rd. and Cusheon Lake Rd. From there, you would have to walk downhill to Beddis Road, turn right and walk to Beddis Beach (stop there for the beautiful view) then walk uphill to Creekside Drive, and in 5 minutes, to your B&B. So it is handy to have a car to explore the whole large island which has many bays, mountains, wetlands, Garry Oak meadows and so on.
There are chickens in the yard and cats in the house (but not in your room). You will likely see wild deer wandering by or even napping in the grass. They love to eat the sweet crab apples that fall from the huge tree behind the house.
You should feel free to make full use of the kitchen and crockery to prepare breakfast in this vegetarian household. Food, mostly organic, is supplied for a hearty continental breakfast. Eggs from the chickens who eat only organic food are available.
The spa-like bathroom has a claw-foot tub and the walls are lined with cedar. The house is a unique area because one nearby neighbor, the famed Saltspringer, "Art the Birdman", has an interesting, varied collection of animals and birds, including emus, that may be visited with Art's supervision.
If you want to sample the many events and shopping in and near the main town of Ganges is only 15-20 minutes away by car. You probably won't want to miss the popular Saturday Market at which many of the artisans, bakers, cooks, and farmers display their wares from 9AM to 3PM.
There are lots of creative workshops on Salt Spring Island. There is music at several cafes and restaurants. The "Sip and Savour Festival" of culinary treats and wines is on September 27th and 28th.
Next is the Apple Festival on September 29th. This is a tour of all the orchards and tastes of many heritage apples. Apple Heaven! There is always something to do, see, hear or contemplate on this island.
At the end of a dead end road, A Country House in Woodland is quiet, safe and restful. At this B&B your bed has a new, comfortable mattress and your room looks out on woodland. Fresh towels are supplied and changed when needed. Everything is geared to your holiday comfort.
There is off-road parking for 1-2 cars on the paved driveway. Your hostess is a writer. Did you see the BBC description of Salt Spring Island? They love this magical place as much as we do.
Guests are welcome in the living room, kitchen, a deck for lounging/reading or guests are invited to eat their breakfast at the table inside or outside if they wish. My own chickens supply eggs but it is best to enjoy watching them without actually touching them. They are cute and amusing.
Interaction with Guests
I interact with my guests as much or as little as they like so that their holiday experience is what they have in mind.
This is a quiet, safe neighbourhood. People are friendly and the nearby beach is dreamy. There are places to walk and contemplate. You are sure to see deer walking the paths their mothers have taught them to walk. There is a creek nearby so lots of birdlife in the woods.
Transportation is challenging on Salt Spring Island for people without cars or bikes. You can see the bus schedule on line and note it goes approximately every 2 hours and carries 2 bikes. The last bus is at 7:30 and a bus trip costs 2.25 one way. Therefore if staying in my rural area it is best to have a car or to be a very experienced cyclist with a good bike that can handle the hilly roads. There is an on-line bus schedule and an on-line car rental (best to book early) as well as bike, scooter and kayak rentals. There is lots of room to park in my paved driveway. I do not take dogs or children due to the chickens and deer.
Other Things to Note
A flashlight is given to all guests as there are no streetlights so the night is deeply dark. You might hear an owl. You might hear deer munching on grass. You might listen to utter silence.
All my guests have been lovely people who are thoughtful. Most are quiet after 8 pm and before 8 am unless an early departure is required. I have had no problems whatsoever and all have been very kind and appreciative.
No smoking on the property or in the house (this is the law in B.C.). There is also a summer burn ban.
Maureen is absolutely a fantastic host. Her place was very unique and very clean. Maureen is an intelligent woman and kind. My son 26 year old and I love the place, especially her beautiful chickens and wild Deers around her place. She provided great breakfast and very nice room. I would love to visit her again in the future. By the way, Ivan said Hello!
We were staying here for 4 days and it was a lovely experience. Maureen is so caring and will do everything she can to improve your stay. We always had a chat at the breakfast table. Cosy and relaxing! She has lots of interesting stories to tell. Her beautiful home stands right in the forest and in walking distance there is beautiful beddis beach. We felt very welcome and were slowing down a bit each day, taking in the nature and drinking tea and coffee. We definitely recommend staying at Maureens.
Maureen is an excellent host who really helped me out with directions and options to cycling Salt Spring and even arranged to pick up my pack at the market making my load a little lighter.
We had a lovely and positive experience at Maureen's Country House in a Woodland! When we drove up the deer was actually right in the yard, just like in her picture! There were tiny spotted twin fawns as well which we were able to get close enough to take really good photos of. They are so tame! The 'Silky' chickens were so cute and remarkably quiet. They look like a cross between a bunny and a chicken! The eggs were smaller but extremely flavorful and produced a delicious breakfast scramble our first morning. The most amazing thing to us was the peace and quiet, which was exactly what we were looking for! So serene... Its a short walk to beautiful Beddis Beach, so for us, the location was perfect! Maureen was such a hospitable and relaxed host and we felt so comfortable. It was like visiting a favorite aunt! She was able to give us tips to great places to eat and she knew exactly what bands were playing where even! Our bed was extremely comfortable, the duvet was divine and we both really enjoyed the ball and claw bathtub! I would have to say the best part for us though had to be the hammock!! Having my morning coffee there while watching the deer was a '10' for me!! We will definitely be back!!
I loved Maureen home on Saltspring Island, it's charming, friendly and peaceful. Her walls are covered in books from floor to ceiling and in the morning she left me a table set with bowls and fruit and instructions on how to help myself to breakfast and coffee. I felt like a queen :) . Maureen is very welcoming and easy to talk to, she asked me what I liked for breakfast and really catered to me personally. The room itself is very sweet and cozy with the best bed and duvet ever!!!!!!!! I slept so well and woke up to the sound of roosters in the distance. Maureen also provided me with little soaps that are made on Saltspring Island .She gave me excellent instructions on how to get to the concert I was attending that evening at the "Southend Grooveyard." and a flashlight to take with me in case I got lost.
I arrived at her place in the afternoon, after a beautiful ferry ride through the Gulf Islands and drove approx 20 minutes from the ferry through beautiful twists and turns of country roads ,passing through the town of Ganges and easily found Maureens enclave in the woods. Once I settled in at her home I walked down the road a few minutes to Beddis beach and sunbathed for a while and collected a handful of pure white tumbled clamshell pieces. The beach is gorgeous. If you are attempting to ride a bike off the ferry to Maureens then prepare yourself for a beautiful ride but long. Saltspring is very hilly and it's better to drive on and take bikes if you are not an experienced road biker. It could be quite daunting esp at night.
I will return to Maureens for sure next time I visit the Island, and I recommend staying here for a serious R and R holiday.
Maureen was an excellent host. She was very accommodating in our breakfast request and provided a variety of food for breakfast. She is an excellent guide to salt spring island and knows where to go and what to do and the secret spots in town! If you have a car when visiting salt spring island, this is a perfect place for you to stay and unwind. The area is extremely quiet and very relaxing.
Maureen is a delightful host, engaging and very helpful. We highly recommend her to others. Her home has an inviting warmth; everything was ideal. The chickens produced some breakfast eggs for us; in the morning a young buck ambled among the tall Douglas fir and cedar.
Saltspring Island has a healthy arts community and is cycle friendly. If you are not a cyclist though, you may enjoy the island even more with your own transportation.
