About This Listing
My stone cottage is now available for summer rentals. It has two independant self contained levels. Ideal for two couples or a family with older children who want their own space from time to time. It is available for a minimum of one week.
BEAUTIFUL STONE COTTAGE IN FONTENAY NORMANDY 50140 FRANCE OVERLOOKING THE FIELDS OF A CHATEAU.
It is a comfortable 300year old fully renovated stone cottage set in beautiful French countryside 600m from shop/cafe/bar, 7kms from Mortain and St Hillaire Du Harcouet 50140 with lots of French cafes and bars. The property is over two levels.
The main level has a larger living dining kitchen with a fireplace, and an upstairs seperate bedroom and bathroom with a bath. There is a double and single bed. Original oak beams and stonework and a sunny verandah for overlooking the fields.
The lower street level is ideal for a couple with a double bed, bathroom, kitchen living with its own entrance and parking, it has exposed stonework and original oak beams. The cottage was originally the toll house and is overlooking the fields of the Chateau with distant views to Mortain.
No stairs on the lower level so it is elderly or handicapped friendly. I am an Australian woman who has lived in France for 6 years. I speak a little French.
Entire house and garden. Self contained.
Interaction with Guests
I do not live at the property. I can offer a discount for stays longer than one month. You would most likely need a car or bikes to explore the local area.
The area is historically significant with many WW2 memorials and sites to visit. Mont St Michel is only 40kms away, Dinan, St Malo and Cancale about one hour away. Wednesday Market in St Hillaire Du Harcouet is the best in the region. During August and July there are many festivals in Sthn Normandy and Brittany. July 19-22 Dinan Medieval Festival is fabulous.
It is 2.5 hours south west of Paris by fast train to Vire around 4 hours drive from Paris. Although not isolated you would definitely require a car to explore the area. There is no public transport within 2kms of the cottage. Car hire is available from Vire or Avranches.
Other Things to Note
Please note the minimum rental is one week. It's not possible to do one night. Longer rentals by negotiation.
No pets allowed. Smoking outside is permitted. Please be aware for people with small children there are no fences and stairs. I will only accommodate the number of persons for the bed allowance eg: sleeps 5 only. It is ideal for two couples on a holiday who like their own space or 2 adults and 2 -3 older children.
As this is the first review, I will try to give as much relevant info I can.
1: Marilyn is a great host. We met her when we arrived and she showed us around. When we went to Mont-Saint-Michel we went also to her B&B at MSM - a very nice romantic-style house. She gave me a great book about D-Day. If you visit the beaches I recommend to read that book.
2: If you like the 'campagne', you will like this too. The cottage is old (300 years old) so you can expect some 'old' characteristics, but if you don't mind - we didn't - it is a very nice cottage. If you are with more than 3 persons you will need both parts of the cottage. The top part with the attic and the lower part in the cellar. The attic can become quite warm. The lower part can become quite chilly (you are living 'under the ground'). Note that the two parts are not connected. You will have to walk around from 1 part to the other. As we were in the countryside we got company of some uninvited guests (flies, snails, spiders). If you are afraid of them, look further. If not, well, they didn't do us any harm (although some flies were annoying). There is a backyard where the kids can play and a BBQ. There is also a road close to the house but don't worry about that. I noticed a few cars coming by in 10 days time and half of those times, it was the post:). It is very quiet there. If you come for your rest, you will get it. There is also wi-fi but it has to be recharged if you use too many MB's. For the mobile internet users: 3G coverage is good. Unlike it is stated on AirBnB, there is no dryer.
3. The stone cottage is in Fontenay but that is a very small village. For your daily shopping you better go to St. Hilaire (Lidl, LeClerc, Carrefour (also cheap fuel (€1,50 for Euro95)). With your car you can drive easily to Mont-Saint-Michel and Saint-Malo. 1+ hours drive to the D-Day beaches and Caen & Bayeux. Also recommend a day to Rennes. There is absolute a lot to see in the region, but if it is pouring with rain you could visit the Aquavire in Vire. If you like to hike or ride your bike there a lot of routes to take too. Tip: if you are returning to Fontenay from your trips and it is getting dark, I would advise not to follow the short routes of your navigation. Most likely you wind up on a windy road with no lights and that can be quite tiresome after a long day site-seeing. My advise: take the A84 and take the D976 at Ducey back to Fontenay.
Final words: Our stay at Marilyn's Stone Cottage was great and we can highly recommend it.

About the Host, Marilyn
I am a happy person living in rural France which I love. I came here 7 years ago to following my dream to live in France. My French cottage is a completely renovated 19th century old stone house in the Baie of Mont St Michel and another gite available for summer rental in Fontenay in a 300yo stone cottage.
I also have my Melbourne apartment in the CBD opposite the MCG which I have available for people coming to stay a short time in Melbourne or relocating for work. I love and enjoy both locations for the history and above all the people and the different lifestyles. I hope you enjoy your stay at one of my properties.
My life's motto?....I have many but most of all I follow this one:
Begin with what you are in no doubt of ... what makes you happy. Take the time to feel secure in your choices and the rest will follow.
