Overlooking the Salt Lake Valley, our beautiful home is 3 minutes from downtown and the Convention Center, 10 mins from the U of U, 12 mins from the airport, and 45 mins from most ski areas. The view is spectacular -- and so is our hospitality!

The space

We have one of the best views of the entire Salt Lake valley, including the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. Our guest quarters downstairs consist of a main bedroom with queen-size bed, a second room with a single bed, and a private bathroom with tub and shower; there is free wi-fi access throughout and AC on hot summer days. Our property, half xeriscaped, is home to many birds including California quail, scrub jays, hummingbirds, mourning doves, and many songbirds. Abby, a gentle female Doberman, is the third member of our family; we all love interacting with our guests! A full gourmet breakfast is included.

Guest access

Guests are welcome to our home, grounds, hot tub, and off-street parking. Our grounds include a small orchard with organic fruit you're welcome to pick & enjoy according to the season: cherries (May), apricots (June), pears and peaches (August), and apples and grapes (Sept-Oct).

Interaction with guests

We are well travelled and always enjoy meeting and interacting with new people. Christiane speaks English, German, Italian, and French fluently; Tom speaks English, French, and a little German.

Other things to note

Included in the price is a gourmet breakfast featuring premium coffee (or tea), homemade breads, homemade granola, high-quality yogurt, fresh fruit, etc. If you have any dietary restrictions, please let us know ahead of time.
We have a beautiful deck at the corner of our property that has one of the most spectacular views in the entire Salt Lake Valley. Guests love being out there, kicking back, and taking it all in!

Tom and Christiane were great! They were very accommodating and let me know that if I need anything to just ask. I enjoyed talking to them about travel and the gourmet breakfast was great! The space was very clean and comfortable. Their new dog was also very friendly and cute. I would definitely recommend people to stay here!

Tom and Christiane are wonderful, warm and friendly hosts. They set up what amounts to a small apartment that occupies part of the bottom floor of their two story house, with private full kitchen, bedroom and bathroom with standard tub and shower. Nothing fancy, but cozy and comfortable. Their home is high on Capitol Hill and offers spectacular views of SLC and the capitol and surroundings, particularly from a deck they built right on the edge of the hillside. It is a 15 minute walk down the hill to the city, but you can drive or Uber there and back in minutes, really easy and worth it for the view! A great, economical and friendly place to stay.

I chose this place based on reviews and I was not disappointed. Tom and Christiane are wonderful hosts and their home is beautiful and comfortable. Not to mention that view! It was our first time in Salt Lake and they made us feel at home, plus offered great advice on sight-seeing and dining. They also served us a lovely breakfast every morning; Christiane's yummy homemade banana bread was especially enjoyable. They're kind people and great conversationalists, I can't recommend them enough!

The view from the backyard makes this place completely worth it. During the day, you have a great view of the city and the mountains in the background. At night, it's a great place to sit with a nice cool mountain breeze while you look out at the city lights. Every morning, they provided a delicious light breakfast with coffee. If the weather permits, the table will be set outside so you can eat with a view. They are both very kind and friendly, but are also very good about letting you just enjoy your trip and come and go as you please!

Tom & Christiane are friendly, supportive and welcoming in to their home. They gave us knowledge & advice on how to best get to our next destination as well as good travel tips on the area. Their home is welcoming and beautiful. They are probably the best hosts around. The kitchen supplied to guests is amazing and we were able to gather and make things for the remainder of our trip with no problem. We have (and will continue) to recommend this spot to our friends and family. With out their input we would have already had an entirely different trip. Thank you, thank you! PS - breakfast is amazing - delicious coffee and banana bread!!

Tom and Christiane are wonderful hosts and their home is a fantastic place to stay. Their view is, of course, a highlight with sweeping views of the entire city. We sat outside with them enjoying a bottle of wine while the sun set. We had a great time swapping stories and hearing about their wealth of experiences. As others mentioned, the included breakfast is also fantastic with homemade granola and banana bread, plus yogurt, fruit, coffee and tea - a great way to start the morning. If I had to point out any issues with their apartment, I would mention that the shower in the bathroom is a bit small and the shower head is set quite low, requiring an average height person to crouch in order to use it. This is a small annoyance for an average height person and may be a problem for anyone on the taller end. Given the warm and friendly hosts, excellent views, comfortable bed, and delicious food, the shower didn't bother us much. Thanks Tom and Christiane, we hope to see you again soon.

This was our first experience staying in an AirBnB location. Tom & Christiane set the bar high with a spectacular view of the city at sunrise, sunset and especially while enjoying their breakfast of home-made banana nut bread. They even made us some fresh bread to take with us on the journey home. The rooms were warm and inviting with windows we could open and enjoy the cool breeze at night. The location was incredible with easy access to the Ensign mountain hiking trail or a quick walk down to the Capital. In addition, Tom & Christiane made us feel right at home making it easy to come and go as we needed enjoying their conversations while still maintaining privacy when we wanted. We will indeed return and hope to stay here again.

Tom & Christiane User ProfileTom & Christiane is a superhost.

Christiane was born in Germany, grew up in Italy, and then moved back to Germany. Tom grew up in the New York metro area. We met in a classroom in Paris and two years later got married on a raft on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. After living in Seattle, Ann Arbor, and Pittsburgh, we moved to Salt Lake City in 1989, where Tom took a position as professor of English and Writing at the University of Utah. Until 9-11 Christiane had a travel business designing individualized, multilingual tours of Utah and the Western US; she is happy to share her knowledge with guests.

We both love outdoor recreation (e.g. skiing, hiking, river rafting), travel, good food & wine, music of all types, reading, international cinema, political discussions, dogs, our iPads, gardening, and more. We have rafted the entire length of the Grand Canyon three times with oar-powered rafts. Tom was a rock climbing fanatic for decades and has a store of knowledge about local climbs. We can also advise about all the local ski areas, other attractions, and many restaurants.

If you've never been to Salt Lake City you'll be surprised by its beautiful setting and all the things there are to see and do. We love it here and take great pleasure in sharing our knowledge with visitors!
