Overlooking the Salt Lake Valley, our beautiful home is 3 minutes from downtown and the Convention Center, 10 mins from the U of U, 12 mins from the airport, and 45 mins from most ski areas. The view is spectacular -- and so is our hospitality!
We have one of the best views of the entire Salt Lake valley, including the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. Our guest quarters downstairs consist of a main bedroom with queen-size bed, a second room with a single bed, and a private bathroom with tub and shower; there is free wi-fi access throughout and AC on hot summer days. Our property, half xeriscaped, is home to many birds including California quail, scrub jays, hummingbirds, mourning doves, and many songbirds. Abby, a gentle female Doberman, is the third member of our family; we all love interacting with our guests! A full gourmet breakfast is included.
Guests are welcome to our home, grounds, hot tub, and off-street parking. Our grounds include a small orchard with organic fruit you're welcome to pick & enjoy according to the season: cherries (May), apricots (June), pears and peaches (August), and apples and grapes (Sept-Oct).
Interaction with Guests
We are well travelled and always enjoy meeting and interacting with new people. Christiane speaks English, German, Italian, and French fluently; Tom speaks English, French, and a little German.
Our neighborhood is a quiet bedroom community very close to downtown Salt Lake City, the State Capitol, and City Creek Canyon. Yet, in the other direction, it's within easy walking distance of historic Ensign Peak and surrounding wildlands, home to deer and coyotes. One block away is a lovely public park with jogging path, tennis courts, and soccer field. Nearby trails make for a stimulating hike to the summit of Ensign Peak or a mountain bike ride on the famous Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
It's only a 5-minute drive (or 20-minute walk) to downtown SLC, the Convention Center, the Mormon Tabernacle, Symphony Hall, Energy Solutions Arena, and numerous high-quality restaurants. A taxi ride to any of these places costs about $7; Uber or Lyft, about $6.
Salt Lake City was host of the 2002 Winter Olympics, and we are blessed to have nine world-class ski areas within an hour's drive:
Alta 45 min
Brighton 40 min
Canyons 45 min
Deer Valley 55 min
Park City 50 min
Powder Mtn 55 min
Snowbasin 45 min
Snowbird 45 min
Solitude 40 min
Other Things to Note
We have a beautiful deck at the corner of our property that has one of the most spectacular views in the entire Salt Lake Valley. Guests love being out there, kicking back, and taking it all in!
We also have an outdoor hot tub available to guests at all times. If you plan to use it, please give us a few hours' notice so we can up the temp!
We have off-street parking. If you're towing a large trailer, please let us know at least 2 days in advance.
No smoking, no loud noise or music, please. If you need to do laundry, there are many public laundromats within 2 miles of our home. Most of the upstairs areas are for ourselves and family (the breakfast table is an exception); please respect our privacy.
I could not have asked for a better experience staying with Tom and Christiane! My hosts were friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the city giving many tips which made our stay even better than it would have been. They've definitely made it necessary for me to come back and visit. Not to mention breakfast and the hot tub, the view, and the great chats!

we loved our stay on
capital hill! ......
This was a fantastic place to stay for a work trip in SLC. Tom and Christiane were very welcoming and nice, live close to town, were very helpful and their banana bread was fantastic. I will stay there again if possible.
It was a real pleasure staying at Capitol Hill Panorama during our trip to Salt Lake City. The description is very accurate. The view is like the SLC post cards view. Tom and Christiane obviously made our weekend even better. The hosts are very kind and pleasant to talk to plus knowledgeable about the city and the vicinity.
Our first experience with AirBnB was a success and we are now more confident in using this system again in the future.
Every day, our breakfasts were d e l i c i o u s and the last day, we had a very early flight home, but they made us a breakfast-box and we enjoyed all of its nicely packed content on the plane.
Tom and Christiane are fantastic hosts and wonderful people, and their home is a perfect place to stay for easy access to (and incredible views of) Salt Lake City. I cannot recommend this listing highly enough.
We stayed with them for four days while house hunting in SLC, as we are relocating there from NYC in a few months. Not only was their home a wonderful place for us to stay, but Tom and Christiane were an invaluable resource for us. We loved talking about their city with them, and their stories and advice played a direct role in our house hunting process. As we prepare to move to an unfamiliar town, Salt Lake couldn't possibly have better ambassadors than Tom and Christiane.
The room is large and comfortable, with truly incredible views of the entire Salt Lake valley. Breakfast was delicious. And the house is very conveniently located in SLC's Capitol Hill neighborhood, with easy access to anywhere you may wish to go in town.
And their dog Abby is amazing! :-)
I am happy I have the opportunity to write this since now I have been here another time before this time and missed the window to mention...Tom and Christiane are wonderful host. 3 of my family member have stayed with them now since May of 2014. A beautiful home and garden. Great living space for guest. Meeting your son for the time and seeing Mia and Abby the dog again are always a treat. Thank you for always being so sweet to me and my family.
Lovely home and views. Lovely people. Brilliant conversion. Nice room and delightful puppy, too. Definitely returning.
Christiane was born in Germany, grew up in Italy, and then moved back to Germany. Tom grew up in the New York metro area. We met in a classroom in Paris and two years later got married on a raft on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. After living in Seattle, Ann Arbor, and Pittsburgh, we moved to Salt Lake City in 1989, where Tom took a position as professor of English and Writing at the University of Utah. Until 9-11 Christiane had a travel business designing individualized, multilingual tours of Utah and the Western US; she is happy to share her knowledge with guests.
We both love outdoor recreation (e.g. skiing, hiking, river rafting), travel, good food & wine, music of all types, reading, international cinema, political discussions, dogs, our iPads, gardening, and more. We have rafted the entire length of the Grand Canyon three times with oar-powered rafts. Tom was a rock climbing fanatic for decades and has a store of knowledge about local climbs. We can also advise about all the local ski areas, other attractions, and many restaurants.
If you've never been to Salt Lake City you'll be surprised by its beautiful setting and all the things there are to see and do. We love it here and take great pleasure in sharing our knowledge with visitors!
