About This Listing
Overlooking the Salt Lake Valley, our beautiful home is 3 minutes from downtown and the Convention Center, 10 mins from the U of U, 12 mins from the airport, and 45 mins from most ski areas. The view is spectacular -- and so is our hospitality!
We have one of the best views of the entire Salt Lake valley, including the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. Our guest quarters downstairs consist of a main bedroom with queen-size bed, a second room with a single bed, and a private bathroom with tub and shower; there is free wi-fi access throughout and AC on hot summer days. Our property, half xeriscaped, is home to many birds including California quail, scrub jays, hummingbirds, mourning doves, and many songbirds. Abby, a gentle female Doberman, is the third member of our family; we all love interacting with our guests! A full gourmet breakfast is included.
Guests are welcome to our home, grounds, hot tub, and off-street parking. Our grounds include a small orchard with organic fruit you're welcome to pick & enjoy according to the season: cherries (May), apricots (June), pears and peaches (August), and apples and grapes (Sept-Oct).
Interaction with Guests
We are well travelled and always enjoy meeting and interacting with new people. Christiane speaks English, German, Italian, and French fluently; Tom speaks English, French, and a little German.
Our neighborhood is a quiet bedroom community very close to downtown Salt Lake City, the State Capitol, and City Creek Canyon. Yet, in the other direction, it's within easy walking distance of historic Ensign Peak and surrounding wildlands, home to deer and coyotes. One block away is a lovely public park with jogging path, tennis courts, and soccer field. Nearby trails make for a stimulating hike to the summit of Ensign Peak or a mountain bike ride on the famous Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
It's only a 5-minute drive (or 20-minute walk) to downtown SLC, the Convention Center, the Mormon Tabernacle, Symphony Hall, Energy Solutions Arena, and numerous high-quality restaurants. A taxi ride to any of these places costs about $7; Uber or Lyft, about $5.
Salt Lake City was host of the 2002 Winter Olympics, and we are blessed to have nine world-class ski areas within an hour's drive:
Alta 45 min
Brighton 40 min
Canyons 45 min
Deer Valley 55 min
Park City 50 min
Powder Mtn 55 min
Snowbasin 45 min
Snowbird 45 min
Solitude 40 min
Other Things to Note
We have a beautiful deck at the corner of our property that has one of the most spectacular views in the entire Salt Lake Valley. Guests love being out there, kicking back, and taking it all in!
We also have an outdoor hot tub available to guests at all times. If you plan to use it, please give us a few hours' notice so we can up the temp!
We have off-street parking. If you're towing a large trailer, please let us know at least 2 days in advance.
No smoking, no loud noise or music, please. If you need to do laundry, there are many public laundromats within 2 miles of our home. Most of the upstairs areas are for ourselves and family (the kitchen & breakfast table is an exception); please respect our privacy.
It is a super amazing experience. I wish we can stay longer in Tom& Christiane's house. The spectacular overlook made me feel I am in heaven. It is experience you cannot miss. Tom and Christiane is a such sweet and friendly couple. I love their homemade banana bread!!! I will definitely stay their house when I visit Salt Lake City next time.
Tom and Christiane were so accommodating! They made us breakfast in the AM with delicious homemade granola, yogurt, freshly baked banana bread and coffee and tea. They are such a wealth of information with all of their adventures over the years. Christiane even let me grab some herbs and arugula from her garden! So sweet. And their dog Abby is adorable.
This house is so fantastic and has spectacular scene at night. The location is very convenient for traveler with car. It just takes few minutes to downtown and several attractions. Tom and Christiane are so nice and make the rooms very comfortable for us. They also provided me lot of useful suggestion about visiting grand teton and yellowstone national park.
Thank you, Tom and Christiane.
We enjoyed the night stayed with you.
I had a fantastic stay! I had to force myself to leave since I was having such a great stay and conversations with my hosts. They are very caring, fun, and knowledgeable folks. Hoping we cross paths again one day whether I'm in SLC or through other travels.
This was one of the most enjoyable traveling experiences I have had in a long time. Tom and Christiane Huckin are wonderful hosts. They made us feel right at home from the minute we arrived. Their home is warm and friendly and the view from their backyard is something you just have to experience.
The Huckins were helpful when it came to finding a restaurant we would enjoy. They gave great directions and this made our dining experience even better.
Breakfast was wonderful. Almost every item was made from scratch! Delicious!
The Huckins are world travelers and we had a late night discussion covering many subjects. We would stay there again if given the chance. We recommend this housing choice to everyone!
Tom and Christiane are the best! They greeted us with warm smiles and showed us right to our room, where they thought of everything, including a lavender scent to help us sleep. We stayed up visiting and had wonderful conversation! They had a fabulous, homemade, breakfast for us the next morning and their backyard view is unlike anything we've seen in Utah. Don't miss the view at night. It is absolutely spectacular! We are so happy we met them and will be returning to their home on our next visit to Salt Lake City! Thanks again!! -jonathan & scarlett
About the Host, Tom & Christiane
Christiane was born in Germany, grew up in Italy, and then moved back to Germany. Tom grew up in the New York metro area. We met in a classroom in Paris and two years later got married on a raft on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. After living in Seattle, Ann Arbor, and Pittsburgh, we moved to Salt Lake City in 1989, where Tom took a position as professor of English and Writing at the University of Utah. Until 9-11 Christiane had a travel business designing individualized, multilingual tours of Utah and the Western US; she is happy to share her knowledge with guests.
We both love outdoor recreation (e.g. skiing, hiking, river rafting), travel, good food & wine, music of all types, reading, international cinema, political discussions, dogs, our iPads, gardening, and more. We have rafted the entire length of the Grand Canyon three times with oar-powered rafts. Tom was a rock climbing fanatic for decades and has a store of knowledge about local climbs. We can also advise about all the local ski areas, other attractions, and many restaurants.
If you've never been to Salt Lake City you'll be surprised by its beautiful setting and all the things there are to see and do. We love it here and take great pleasure in sharing our knowledge with visitors!
